  • Methodology based on the elastic-plastic fracture mechanics has been widely accepted in predicting the critical crack length(CCL) of pressure tubes of CANDU nuclear plants. A conservative estimate of CCL is obtained by employing the J-resistance curves measured with the specimens satisfying plane strain condition as suggested in the ASTM standard. Due to limited thickness of the pressure tubes the curved compact tension(CT) specimens taken out from tile pressure tube have been used in obtaining J-resistance curves. The curved CT specimen inevitably introduce slant fatigue crack during precracking. Hence, effect of specimen geometry and slant crack on J-resistance curve should be explored. In this study, the difference of J integral values between the standard CT specimens satisfying plane strain condition and the nonstandard curved CT with limited thickness (4.2mm) is estimated using finite element analysis. The fracture resistance curves of Zr-2.5Nb obtained previously by other authors are critically discussed. Various finite element analysis were conducted such as 2D analysis under plane stress and plane strain conditions and 3D analysis for flat CT, curved CT with straight crack and curved CT with slant crack front. J-integral values were determined by local contour integration near the crack tip, which was considered as accurate J-values. J value was also determined from the load versus load line displacement curve and the J estimation equation in the ASTM standard. Discrepancies between the two values were shown and suggestion was made for obtaining accurate J values from the load line displacement curves obtained by the curved CT specimens.

  • Uninterrupted facility - since there is a close relationship between traffic volume, speed and density -, when a ramp traffic flow merges into the main line, will change the traffic speed or density, and the corresponding correlational model equation will be changed. Thus, this study, using time and space-series traffic data on areas under the influence of such a merging, identified sections which changed the correlation between speed and density variables, and examined such changes. As a result, the upstream and merging sections showed the "Underwood"-shaped exponent, and the downstream after passing the merging section showed a straight line "Greenshields" model. The downstream section which changed the correlation between speed and density showed a gradual downstream movement phenomenon within 100 m-500 m from the end of the third lane linking with the ramp, as the traffic approached the inner lanes. Also, the upstream section, merging section, and downstream section involving a change showed heterogeneous traffic flows which, in the speed-density model, have a statistically different free flow speed (constant) and a different ratio of free flow speed to jam density (gradient).

  • The kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of Acid Red 66, adsorbed by granular activated carbon, were investigated on areas of initial concentration, contact time, and temperature. The adsorption equilibrium data were applied to Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Redlich-Peterson, and Temkin isotherms. The agreement was found to be the highest in the Freundlich model. From the determined Freundlich separation factor (1/n = 0.125 ~ 0.232), the adsorption of Acid Red 66 by granular activated carbon could be employed as an effective treatment method. Temkin's constant related to adsorption heat (BT = 2.147 ~ 2.562 J mol-1) showed that this process was physical adsorption. From kinetic experiments, the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second order model with good agreement. The results of the intraparticle diffusion equation showed that the inclination of the second straight line representing the intraparticle diffusion was smaller than that of the first straight line representing the boundary layer diffusion. Therefore, it was confirmed that intraparticle diffusion was the rate-controlling step. From thermodynamic experiments, the activation energy was determined as 35.23 kJ mol-1, indicating that the adsorption of Acid Red 66 was physical adsorption. The negative Gibbs free energy change (ΔG = -0.548 ~ -7.802 kJ mol-1) and the positive enthalpy change (ΔH = +109.112 kJ mol-1) indicated the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the adsorption process, respectively. The isosteric heat of adsorption increased with the increase of surface loading, indicating lateral interactions between the adsorbed dye molecules.

  • Objective: This study was performed to investigate the labio/buccal clinical crown curvatures of Korean permanent teeth and to obtain the curve-ratio data in an attempt to fabricate bracket bases fit for each individual Korean permanent tooth. Methods: Three-dimensional digital models were made from 30 sets of dental casts with normal anatomic structures. According to the FA points, horizontal and vertical reference planes were established and lines were drawn on the tooth surfaces in reference to these planes. The curvature was expressed as the coefficient of a quadratic equation. Lines mesial, distal, gingival and occlusal to the horizontal, vertical reference planes and the FA point were drawn. Results: The curvature measured for each line revealed that there are no significant differences between male and female, except for maxillary canines and maxillary second bicuspids (p > 0.05). There were notable differences in the mesio-distal or gingivo-occlusal curvatures among the mandibular lateral incisors, maxillary canines, maxillary and mandibular first and second bicuspids and first molars (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The labial & buccal crown curvatures of teeth in Korean normal occlusion were measured on the mesial and distal, gingival and occlusal sides respectively in this study. Based on these data, a SWA can be developed to fit the individual features of Korean tooth crowns.

  • Recently, as demand of video processor unit rapidly increases, excellent quality of the video has been required. However, generally, video data occurs the quick flame of video due to various external causes in process of acquisition, treatment, and transmission, and major cause of the quick flame of the video is known as the noise. There are various kinds of noise, which are added to the video, AWGN is a typical one. Thus, this thesis suggested algorithm that treats in three methods by scale of the edge through using edge information of local masks. In case that edge pixel is big, it applied spatial weighting according to equation of straight line about direction of edge pixel. In case that edge pixel is middle, it suggested algorithm with spatial weighting filter and average filter, and for the smooth territory, it suggested algorithm that treats with average filter.

  • An electromagnetic flowmeter(EMF) essentially averages the velocity distribution over the pipe cross- sectional area, and the measured value is dependent on the velocity profiles. In this study, installation effects of 90$^{\circ}$long elbow(KS B 1522, ISO 3419) on the EMF characteristics was investigated. A commercial EMF was adopted and the distribution of magnetic field in the electrodes cross section was measured. In the experiment, the national flow standard system, of which measurement uncertainty was evaluated in accordance with ISO 17025 recommendation, was used fur characterization of EMF. The leading line has 150D long straight pipe to established a fully developed flow before entering into the elbow and the elbow was installed downstream of it. then the flowmeter was tested within 50 D from the elbow. The installation effects of the flowmeter were investigated by varying the mean velocity(Reynolds No.)in pipe section, the locations and the direction of electrodes plane.($\phi$) From the experimental results, we find the optimal conditions to get most accurate measurements. Generally, the deviations from the calibration value were less than 0.5 % in farther than 10D distance from the elbow and the direction of electrode plane. $\phi$ = 90$^{\circ}$yielded the smallest measurement deviation. These characteristics were shown consistently in turbulent region regardless of the mean Reynolds number.

  • This paper considers the influence of floc on the sedimentation rate for the cohesive material. The effects of floc density and size changes were also taking into consideration during the experiment. The settling velocity of a discrete floc was measured in a quiescent water column. Floc diameter and density were investigated using a modified Stokes equation with some constants such as water density, viscosity, material density and the floc fractal dimension $n_f$ obtained from the relationship between the floc diameter and the floc settling. The floc diameter of quartz and alumina increased at increasing initial concentrations. The floc size of quartz with increasing NaCl concentration varied between approximately 0.8 um to $10{\mu}m$. Floc density decreased as floc size increased. The floc settling velocity and the floc diameter have a straight line relationship on a logarithm. The floc fractal dimension nf was 2.65 with increasing of initial concentration and 2.93 with increasing of NaCl. The exponent n to predict the settling velocity was proposed and varied from 1 to 1.93.

  • The exposure doses by the radioactive gaseous effluents from nuclear power plants are investigated in the two cases of normal operation and hypothetical accident. Gaussian equation is adapted in the normal operation as the diffusion model of effluents for long period, which uses annual average meteorological data. But the real time models have been used in the case of accidents which analyze the changes of wind direction and speed. In this study the annual exposure doses by the normal operation of Kori unit 1 during $1977{\sim}1982$ were calculated on the basis of the atmospheric diffusion factor by the Gaussian straight line model. And the image processing technique was suggested as the effective method through the wind tunnel experiments to get the characteristic value of atmospheric diffusion coefficient required especially in the accidents of nuclear power plants.

  • The dynamic force estimation and strength design of KALES(Korea Accelerated Loading and Environmental Simulator) are studied. The KALES is continuously rotating the test track and subjected to the dynamic or impact forces during operation since the track is composed of straight and curved line. To estimate the dynamic equation for the model car which was already made is derived with analytical and experimental techniques. Using similarity relationships between the model car and KALES, the dynamic force and stability properties for KALES can be predicted. The stress analysis and fatigue life estimation of KALES is also estimated with the calculated dynamic load. From the stress analysis and fatigue life estimation results, it was found that the design of KALES is safe.

  • Lodging is classified as root lodging caused by the loss of supporting force in the root, bending caused by the deformation of the stem and breaking where the stem breaks down as loads exceeding critical elasticity were applied. This research excluded breaking which is not in a state of equilibrium and tried to partition the level of lodging using an algebraic model in root lodging and stem lodging, or bending. When a vertical load was applied, the deformation of the stem of rice plant showed the form of a quadratic equation. The trace of the panicle neck in the process of lodging was an ellipse-shape. When loading was pure root lodging, the trace of the panicle neck became a circle of which culm length is the radius. When it was a pure stem lodging, the trace of the panicle neck is an ellipse of which major axis is culm length and minor axis is 0.64* culm length. When both stem lodging and root lodging occurred in a natural setting, the partitioning of lodging can be calculated by a formula using eccentricity of an ellipse, S=e*100/0.768(S is the ratio of stem lodging in the whole lodging, e is eccentricity of the ellipse). This method is expected to be useful in simple lodging partitioning. We could also calculate the partitioning of stem lodging and root lodging as units of angles as an accuracy method, by using a straight line calculated by differentiating a quadratic equation of stem deformation at the origin of the coordinates. These two methods for dividing root and stem lodging showed different values. However, each of them showed almost same values with different lodging degree in one plant.
