The effects of severe plastic deformation and heat treatment on the mechanical properties of Al 5052 and 6005 alloys were investigated using the metallurgical technique and nano-indentation technique in nano-surface region. Equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) was used to apply severe plastic deformation to the aluminum alloys in order to obtain fine grain sized materials. The elastic modulus was measured and interpreted in relation to the metallurgical observation. The elastic modulus increased after ECAP process due to evolution of the fine grains. However, the elastic modulus decreased after heat treatment due to generation of coarsened precipitates on the grain boundaries.
Much research efforts have been made on the equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) which produces ultra-fine grains. Along with the experiments, the finite element method has been widely employed to investigate the deformation behavior of specimen during ECAP and the effect of process parameters of ECAP. In this paper, sectional shape change has been investigated during ECAP with the pure-Zr, Zr-702 by using three-dimensional finite element analysis. The results have been compared with experimental results.
A lot of investigations have been made in recent years on the equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) which produces ultra-fine grains. The finite element method has been used to investigate this issue. In this paper, pure-Zirconium is considered far ECAP process by three dimensional finite element analysis. The effects of fiction on the deformation behavior have been investigated and compared with two dimensional finite element analysis.
The evolution of texture and microstructure during continuous confined strip shearing (CCSS) in aluminum 3003 alloy sheets was investigated. The tools of CCSS based on the equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) were designed to provide a constant shear deformation of the order of 0.5 per pass while preserving the original sheet shape. FEM results indicated that the shear formation is not homogeneous throughout the sample thickness, in particular at the surface layers. A randomization of textures took place during the CCSS deformation. Observations by TEM and EBSD revealed the formation of sub-micrometer sized grains after CCSS.
The grain size of 7010 Al alloy was refined to submicrometer level by using equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) and additional warm rolling. The mechanisms of grain refinement in ECAP process were fragmentation of coarse grain to ultra fine subgrains after a few passes and continuous recrystallization of the subgrains with the increase o( passes. Because of ultrafine grain size, essentially low temperature and high strain rate superplasticity was observed after ECAP process and warm rolling to form a sheet metal. The maximum elongation of 700% was obtained for an ECA pressed specimen after IS passes without warm rolling at $450^{\circ}C$ with strain rate of 5x$10^{-3}$/sec.
The continuous confined strip shearing (CCSS) based on the equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) was modeled by means of a rigid-plastic two-dimensional finite element method (FEM). Parallel to the simulations, samples of AA 1050 sheets were experimentally deformed by CCSS. The CCSS deformation led to the formation of through thickness texture gradients comprising a strong shear texture in the sheet center and weak shear textures in the sheet surfaces. FEM analysis revealed variations in the strain component $\varepsilon_13$ along the sample thickness direction, which gave rise to the evolution of different textures. A high friction between the sample and die surface was responsible for lowering intensities of the shear texture components in thickness layers close to the surfaces.
Ultra-fine grained and high hardened Al sheet was obtained by Equal channel angular pressing (ECAP). During this process the microstructure, the hardness and the texture of AA 1050 Al alloy sheet are changed by a severe shear deformation. The plastic strain ratio after the ECAP and subsequent heat-treatment condition has been investigated in this study. It was found that the average r-value of the ECAPed and subsequent heat-treated specimen was 1.7 times higher than those of the initial Al sheet. This could be attributed to the various texture formations through the ECAP and subsequent heat-treatment of AA 1050 Aluminum alloy sheet.
Microstructural and mechanical characteristics of P/M 6061 Al alloy subjected to equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) were investigated. The P/M 6061 Al alloy had an intial grain size of approximately $20\mutextrm{m}$. An equiaxed ultra-fine grained structure with the mean grain size of $~50 \mutextrm{m}$ was obtained by four repetitive ECAP at 473 K. The microhardness of P/M 6061 Al alloy was drastically increased from about 40 Hv to 80 Hv by two repetitive ECAP at 373 K. However, the microhardness decreased with increasing ECAP temperature. The tensile stength of as-hot-pressed P/M 6061 Al alloy before ECAP was 95 MPa, whereas it increased to both 248 MPa after two repetitive ECAP at 373 K and 130 MPa after four repetitive ECAP at 473 K. The tensile properties of the ECAPed sample were compared with those of commercial cast 6061-O and 6061-T4 Al alloys.
The 6061 Al alloy based composites reinforced with 10 vol% SiC whiskers were prepared by powder metallurgy with the powders having the different sizes, i.e. < $30{\mu}m$ and > $30{\mu}m$ The composites were subjected to equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) at various conditions and the microstructural changes during ECAP were examined In the composites SiC whiskers were clustered and randomly aligned. The clusters were relatively well distributed in the composite with the smaller initial powder size. After ECAP, the clusters were aligned parallel to flow direction and became smaller. In addition, the shape of clusters was changed from irregular to round. The microstructure of the ECAPed samples were compared with those of the conventionally hot-extruded composites. The uniform microstructure and enhanced microhardness could be obtained by using the powders having the smaller size, decreasing ECAP temperature and repeating ECAP.
The deformation behavior of copper during equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) was calculated using a three-dimensional version of a constitutive model based on the dislocation density evolution. Finite element simulations of the variation of the dislocation density and the dislocation cell size with the number of ECAP passes are reported. The calculated stress, strain and cell size are compared with the experimental data for Cu deformed by ECAP in a modified Route C regime. The results of FEM analysis were found to be in good agreement with the experiments. After a rapid initial decrease down to about 200 nm in the first ECAP pass, the average cell size was found to change little with further passes. Similarly, the strength increased steeply after the first pass, but tended to saturate with further pressings. The FEM simulations also showed strain non-uniformities and the dependence of the resulting strength on the location within the workpiece.
