The seismic risk in Seoul Metropolitan Area(latitude 37.0$^{\circ}$~37.8$^{\circ}$, longitude 126.5$^{\circ}$~127.5$^{\circ}$)based on all Korean earthquake data of Modified Mercalli Intensity equal to or greater than V is evaluated by extreme value method and point source method. The seismic risk estimated from all data turned out to be lower than from the data since the Chosen dynasty during which seismic data appear to be rather complete. The damaging earthquake of park horizontal ground acceleration grater than 0.1g turns out to occur with 90% probability of being exceeded in 200 years when the data since the Chosen Dynasty are used.
We propose a dynamic wavelength assignment algorithm for online RWA problem in WDM networks with wavelength conversion. With our algorithm, for a given network condition, the following results have been proven mathematically: (1) the probability to find the set of wavelengths for a requested connection is equal or better than any other previously proposed algorithms, (2) our algorithm minimizes the usage of converters by chaining the minimum number of the longest wavelength continuous segments, leaving more converters available for future requests and (3) the complexity of our algorithm is reasonable, which is also another advantage of our algorithm.

Slotted ALOHA(S-ALOHA) is widely used in local wireless network. We analyze the performance of contention-based model in wireless LAN using S-ALOHA protocol. We analyze the performance of binary exponential backoff (BEB) algorithm under the slotted ALOHA protocol: whenever a node's message which tries to reserve a channel is involved in a collision for the ith time, it chooses one of the next $2^i$ frames with equal probability and attempts the reservation again. We derive the expected access delay and throughput which is defined as the expected number of messages that reserve a channel in a frame. A simulation study is performed to verify our method.
This paper presents basic queueing analysis contributing to teletraffc theory, with commonly accessible mathematical tools. This paper studies queueing systems with bulk arrivals. It is assumed that the number of arrivals and the expected number of arrivals in each bulk are bounded by some constraints B and (equation omitted), respectively. Subject to these constraints, convexity argument is used to show that the bulk-size probability distribution that results in the worst mean queue performance is an extremal distribution with support {1, B} and mean equal to A. Furthermore, from the viewpoint of security against denial-of-service attacks, this distribution remains the worst even if an adversary were allowed to choose the bulk-size distribution at each arrival instant as a function of past queue lengths; that is, the adversary can produce as bad queueing performance with an open-loop strategy as with any closed-loop strategy. These results are proven for an arbitrary arrival process with bulk arrivals and a general service model.
In multimedia communication systems, efficient transmission system design should incorporate the use of matching unequal error protection (UEP), since source coders exhibit unequal bit error sensitivity. In this paper, we present UEP schemes which exploit differences in bit error protection levels in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems over frequency selective fading channels. We introduce an UEP scheme which improves the link performance with multiple transmit and receive antennas. Especially, we propose a new receiver structure based on two stage Maximum Likelihood detection (MLD) schemes which can approach the performance of a full search MLD receiver with much reduced computational complexity. In the performance analysis, we derive a generalized pairwise error probability expression for the proposed UEP schemes. Simulation results show that the proposed schemes achieve a significant performance gain over the conventional equal error protection (EEP) scheme.

This study lotuses on the seismic behavior of 3-, 9-, and 20-story steel moment resisting frame (MRF) structures designed in accordance with the 2000 International Building Code using different Response Modification factors (R factors) 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12. For a detailed case study, 30 different structures were evaluated for twenty ground motions representing the hazard level which is equal to a 2% probability exceeding in 50 years (2% in 50 years). The results showed that the current R factors provide conservative designs for the 3- and 9-story buildings for the Collapse Prevention performance objective. However, the 20-story buildings designed without using the minimum requirement of spectral acceleration CS prescribed in the IBC 2000 did not satisfy the seismic performance for Collapse Prevention performance.
This paper presents an analytical study aimed at evaluating the seismic performance of steel moment resisting frames (MRFs) retrofitted with different approaches. For this, 3, 6 and 12 storey MRFs having four equal bays of 5 m were selected as the case study models. The models were designed with lateral stiffness insufficient to satisfy code drift and hinge limitations in zones with high seismic hazard. Three different retrofit strategies including traditional diagonal bracing system and energy dissipation devices such as buckling restrained braces and viscoelastic dampers were used for seismic upgrading of the existing structures. In the nonlinear time history analysis, a set of ground motions representative of the design earthquake with 10% exceedance probability in fifty years was taken into consideration. Considering the local and global deformations, the results in terms of inter-storey drift index, global damage index, plastic hinge formations, base shear demand and roof drift time history were compared. It was observed that both buckling-restrained braces and viscoelastic dampers allowed for an efficient reduction in the demands of the upgraded frames as compared to traditional braces.
The use of amorphous magnetic alloys as tags or targets in electronic article surveillance systems such as antishoplifting desvices is briefly reviewed. Improved tags became possible with the discovery in 1988 of asymmetric magnetization reversal (AMR) in certain amorphous alloys annealed in applied field approximately equal to the earth's field. These asymmetric hysteresis loops are highly unusual, if not unique, and so greatly diminish the probability of false alarms in a detection system. furthermore, the jump field Hj, which is the coercive field in negative applied fields, can be controlled over a useful range by controlling the field applied to the sample during annealing. By applying several tags to an object, each with a different jump field, it is possible to identify the object with a numeric code that can be remotely read by nonoptical means.

The outdoor design conditions for the locality are the basic problem in the design of air conditioning system. The ideal solution to the basic problem is to design a building that has a capacity at maximum output just equal to the load which develops the most severe conditions for the locality occur, but in most cases, economics interferes the attainment of the ideal. Studies of weather records show that the most severe conditions do not repeat themselves every year. The weather conditions of principal cities such as Seoul, Inchon, Suwon, Taegu, Chonju, Ulsan, Kwangju, Pusan and Mokpo in Korea have been analyzed to determine the probability of occurrence of certain temperatures according to recent 10 years $(1960\∼1969)$ weather records. The outdoor conditions for winter air conditioning design are shown on Table 2. The outdoor conditions for summer air condioning design are shown on Table 7. Heating degree days are shown on Table 10 and 11.
The purpose of this study was to describe perimenstrual symptom severity levels and perimenstrual distress patterns of women. The study performed the discriminant analysis in which included seven factors : age, pariety, social support, menstrual socialization(mother's symptom, sister's symptom, and menstrual effect), attitude of sex role and depression. The subjects were 283 women that they were not pregnant or lactating, had at least one period in past three months, would understand the purpose of study and willingly accepted the participation. The data analysis was done by pc-SAS program after data collection from Nov. 20, 1997 to Dec. 18, 1997. The descriptive analysis was done to explore general characteristics of the subjects and the stepwise discriminant analysis was done to verify factors in relation to perimenstrual symptom severity levels(severe vs mild menstrual symptom group) and perimenstrual distress patterns(spasmodic vs congestive menstrual symptom group). The instruments were selected for this study from Interpersonal Support Evaluation List(ISEL) by Cohen and Hoberman(1983), Center for Epidemic Studies Depression(CES-D) by Radloff(1977), and Sex Role Attitude Scale by Yunok Suh(1995), Mother's symptom and sister's symptom measurements by Woods, Mitchell & Lentz(1995), and menstrual effect by Brooks-Gun & Ruble(1980). The major findings of this study are as follows : 1. Of the 283 women, 93 women(32.9%) were assessed to severe perimenstrual symptom group and 190 women(67.1%) were assessed to mild perimenstrual symptom group. Results from the stepwise discriminant analysis showed three factors, such as depression, menstrual effect, and age, significantly related to perimenstrual symptom severity and they explained 20% of the total variance. The linear discriminant equation included three factors related to perimenstrual symptom groups was showed(Z=1.445 depression+0.174 menstrual effect-0.054 age). The cutting score(Z) was 2.809. We classified the severe perimenstrual symptom group by more than the cutting score 2.809 and the mild perimenstrual symptom by less or equal than the cutting score 2.809. The correctedness of posterior probability from discriminant equation was 72% as two perimenstrual symptom group classifications. 2. Of the 264 women, 139 women(52.7%) were assessed to spasmodic perimenstrual distress group and women(47.3%) were assessed to congestive perimenstrual distress group. Results from the stepwise discriminant analysis showed two factors, such as depression, age, significantly related to perimenstrual distress groups and they explained 8% of the total variance. The linear discriminant equation included two factors related to perimenstrual distress group was showed(Z=-0.084 age-0.776 depression). The cutting score(Z) was -3.759. We classified the spasmodic perimenstrual distress group by more than cutting score -3.759 and the congestive perimenstrual distress group by less or equal than cutting score -3.759. The correctedness of posterior probability from discriminant equation was 65% as two perimenstrual distress group classifications.
