Exploring the Potential of Bacteria-Assisted Phytoremediation of Arsenic-Contaminated Soils

  • Arsenic pollution is a serious global concern which affects all life forms. Being a toxic metalloid, the continued search for appropriate technologies for its remediation is needed. Phytoremediation, the use of green plants, is not only a low cost but also an environmentally friendly approach for metal uptake and stabilization. However, its application is limited by slow plant growth which is further aggravated by the phytotoxic effect of the pollutant. Attempts to address these constraints were done by exploiting plant-microbe interactions which offers more advantages for phytoremediation. Several bacterial mechanisms that can increase the efficiency of phytoremediation of As are nitrogen fixation, phosphate solubilization, siderophore production, ACC deaminase activity and growth regulator production. Many have been reported for other metals, but few for arsenic. This mini-review attempts to present what has been done so far in exploring plants and their rhizosphere microbiota and some genetic manipulations to increase the efficiency of arsenic soil phytoremediation.

도시계획적 접근에서의 건강도시 조성의 가치 추정과 부문간 협력에 대한 함의 (Measuring Values of Creating Healthy Cities with an Urban Planning Perspective and Implication of Multidisciplinary Collaboration between Public Health and Urban Planning)

  • Objectives: Recent movements in urban planning propose a promotion of health condition as one of its emerging topics as growing body of evidence suggests that individual health is correlated with the built environment. The concept of healthy city was introduced in Korea and many local governments were tried to implement relevant policies. However, empirical studies were insufficient for understanding the relationship between health and the built environment. Most studies and policies were viewed and implemented from public health perspective. The purpose of this study is to estimate a value of healthy city as an activity-friendly environment. Methods: The 195-respondent survey data in Seoul Metropolitan Area was used for estimating the perception of healthy cities. Results: Survey results reported that more than 90% of respondents did walking and/or biking regularly. Moreover, they were willing to pay won3,695 per month for creating healthy cities. Conclusions: This study confirmed that the consideration of built environmental factor was necessary in policies of healthy city. This can offer insights into how to manage and develop the policies of healthy city to help promote individual health conditions.

중성 셀룰라제 처리에 의한 데님의 물성 (Effect of Cellulase on Characteristics of Denim)

  • Recently, eco-friendly processing has been focused in the textile industry in order to reduce environmental pollutions. Applications of enzyme technology to the textile industry are an example of more environmentally compatible processes. However, there is not enough quantity of referring to denim fabric subjected to enzymatic treatment. In this study, depending on pH, temperature, cellulase concentration, and treatment time, the weight loss of denim fabrics was examined. Characteristics of enzyme-treated fabrics were measured by tearing strength, stiffness, and K/S values. The effect of a non-ionic surfactant (Triton X-100) on characteristics of the enzyme-treated fabrics was evaluated. The cellulase treatment condition on the cotton fabric were optimized to pH 6.0, $50^{\circ}C$, 1%(o.w.f.), and 60minutes. Characteristics of denim fabrics by cellulase treatment in the presence of Triton X-100 did not improve because Triton-X inhibited the activity of enzyme.

강우시 발생하는 고속도로 유출수의 초기우수 특성 및 기준 (Characteristics of First Flush in Highway Storm Runoff)

  • Vehicle emissions from highway landuse include different pollutants such as heavy metals, oil and grease and particulates from fuels, brake pad wear and tire wear. Since highways are impervious and have high pollutant mass emissions from vehicular activity, it is considered as stormwater intensive landuses. Therefore this research was performed to understand the magnitude of first flush and to suggest the criteria of first flush for storm runoff management in highways. The fractions of washed-off mass are very high in first 30% of runoff volume, which suggests a definition of first flush. The washed-off mass stabilizes after 30% of the runoff volume and it is apparent that treatment capacity in the early part of a storm is more valuable than treatment capacity in the later part of the storm. Using the criteria of "high" first flush and "medium" first flush, as 50% of the mass in the first 30% of the volume, and 30 to 50% in the first 30% volume, respectively, more than 30% of the storms showed high first flush. A "first flush friendly" best management practice(BMP), meaning a BMP that can treat a high percentage or all of the initial flow, would be advantageous up to 80% of the events.

  • Today's rapid industrialization and population concentration in cities lead to a vast economic growth, and consequently, people's increased desire of spending demands abundant and diverse food. As a result in Korea, annual food waste is 4.1 million tons (24.6% of household waste) and daily food waste amount to 11,397 tons which is equivalent to 1,400 loads of 8-ton truck. It is best to recycle toed waste as manure, forage, and fuel than reclamation but separate collection of food waste is very difficult by reason of water content. So only a little portion of food waste from large-scaled restaurants and cafeterias that handle food waste relatively well. requirement for recycling food wastes into forage and manure needless to say, reduction activity is best way. Therefore, large-scaled restaurants and cafeterias need to seek plans to minimize food resource waste thus reducing the cost and waste processing cost by implementing appropriate reduction program.

Acid-Base Bifunctional Metal-Organic Frameworks: Green Synthesis and Application in One-Pot Glucose to 5-HMF Conversion

  • The direct synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with acidic and basic active sites is challenging due to the introduction of functional groups by post-functionalization method often jeopardize the framework integrity. Herein, we report the direct synthesis of acid-base bifunctional MOFs with tuning acid-base strength. Employing modulated hydrothermal (MHT) approach, microporous MOFs named $UiO-66-NH_2$ was prepared. Through the ring-opening reaction of 1,3-propanesultone with amino group, $UiO-66-NH_2-SO_3H-type$ catalysts can be obtained. The synthesized catalysts were well characterized and their catalytic performances were evaluated in one-pot glucose to 5-HMF conversion. Results revealed the acid-base bi-functional catalyst possessed high activity and excellent stability. This work provides a general and economically viable approach for the large-scale synthesis of acid-base bi-functional MOFs for their potential use in catalysis field.

환경 인쇄 기술의 발전과 인쇄물의 $CO_2$ 발생량에 관한 연구 (A Study about Development of Environment Printing Technology and $CO_2$)

  • For as to world, the concern about the environment problem is enhanced than any other time in the past because of being 21 century. And the environment problem is highlighted as the world-wide issue. The time of the environment problem intimidates the alive of the mankind and presence of an earth over the time. It becomes the essentiality not being selection in the personal living or the economical viewpoint now to prepare for the climatic modification. As to the company management, the green growth period which it excludes the environment management considering an environment, cannot carry on the company the continued management comes. That is, in the change center of the management paradigm, there is the environment management. Nearly, the greenhouse gas which the publication industry is the environmental toxic material like all industries is generated. The greenhouse gas is ejected in the process of running the manufacturing process and print shop of the various kinds material used as the raw material of the book. Particularly, the tree felling for getting the material of the paper is known to reach the direct influence on the global warming. This study does according to an object it considers and organizes the environment parameter based on this kind of fact as to the publication industry. And it is determined as the reference which is used as the basic materials preparing the case that carbon exhaust right transaction(CAP and TRADE) drawing are enforced in all industries and is sustainable the management of the publication industry and reduces the environmental risk among the company many risk management elements and plans and enforces the publication related policy that there is a value. In the printing publication industry, this study tried to inquire into elements discharging the environmental pollutant or the greenhouse gas. Additionally, in the printed publication production process, it tried to inquire into the effort for an environment-friendly and necessity at the printing paper and the printers ink, regarded as the element discharging the greenhouse gas all kinds of the printing materials, operation of the print shop and all kinds of the machines and recycle process, and etc. These considerations make these industrial field employees aware of the significance about a conservation and environmental protection. They try to give a help in the subsequent study producing quantitatively each environmental parameter emission of green house gas. This makes the calculation of the relative $CO_2$ output reproached ultimately possible. Meanwhile, in a sense, many research protects and improving an environment in connection with the contents of research at the printing publication industrial field is in progress. There will be the voluntary human face that it has to protect an environment but this can not do by the outside factor according to all kinds of environment related law and regulation. Anyway, because of acting on company management as the factor of oppression, the increase of this environment-related correspondence cost could know that the research that the environment loading relates with a procurement and development, environment management system introduction, quality control standard, including, normalizing including a material, and etc. through the part of the effort to reduce the cost low was actively in progress. As to the green growth era, as follows, this paper prescribed the subject and alternative of the print publication industry. It is surrounded by the firstly new digital environment and the generation of the subject. And secondly the printing industry is caused by the point of time when the green growth leaves by the topic which is largest in the global industry and it increases. The printing publication industry has to prepare the bridgehead for the environment-friendly green growth as the alternative for this resolution with first. The support blown in each industry becomes the obligation not being selection. Prestek in which the print publishing was exposed to spend many energies and which is known as the practice of the sustainable print publishing insisted that it mentioned importance of the green printing through the white pages in 2008 and a company had to be the green growth comprised through the environment-friendly activity. The core management for the sustainable printing publication industry presented from Presstack white pages is compacted to 4 words that it is a remove, reduce, recover, and recycle. Second, positively the digital printing(POD) system should be utilized. In the worldwide print out market, the digital printing area stops at the level of 10% or so but the change over and growth of the market of an analog-to-digital will increase rapidly in the future. As to the CEO Jeff Hayes of the Infoland, the offset print referred to that it of the traditional method got old and infirm with the minor phase of the new printing application like the customer to be wanted publication and the print of the digital method led the market. In conclusion, print publishers have to grasp well the market flow in the situation where a digitalization cannot be generalized and a support cannot avoid. And it keeps pace with the flow of the digital age and the recognition about the effort for the development and environment problem have to be raised. Particularly, the active green strategy is employed for the active green strategy.

감자 역병의 친환경 방제를 위한 키토산 제형의 살포 (Application of Chitosan Preparations for Eco-friendly Control of Potato Late Blight)

  • 감자역병은 감자재배에서 가장 중요한 병 중의 하나다. 감자역병의 친환경방제를 위하여 SH-1와 SH-2을 이용하여 감자역병균의 균사생장, 예방효과, 잎을 이용한 생물검정 및 포장시험을 통해 평가하였다. 실내에서 유묘를 이용한 시험에서 SH-1와 SH-2 제형을 살포 후 역병균을 접종 후 예방효과를 조사한 결과 95% 이상 발병을 억제하는 효과가 있었다. SH-1과 SH-2의 균사생장 억제 효과는 $300{\mu}g/ml$의 농도에서 균총의 크기를 74% 이상을 억제하였다. 잎을 이용한 생물검정에서 1% SH-1와 SH-2을 살포 후 1시간 뒤에 병원균을 접종한 결과 병의 발달을 줄였다. 감자 줄기에 총 폴리페놀 함량도 SH-1와 SH-2을 살포한 구에서 증가하였다. 포장에서 역병방제효과 시험에서 1% SH-1와 SH-2을 7일 간격 4회 살포한 처리구에서 각각 72%와 53%의 역병 방제 효과가 있었으며, 14일간 3회 살포한 구에도 유사한 병 방제효과를 보였다. 감자비대기에 1% SH-1와 SH-2 살포는 감자 생체 중을 증가시켰으며, 상품의 비율도 높았다. 이 결과에 의하면 SH-1와 SH-2의 살포는 친환경 유기농업에서 천연살균제로서 역병 방제에 사용 할 수 있으며, 감자 수확량도 증가시킬 수 있다.

노인층 옥외활동의 질적 GIS를 활용한 근린환경 특성의 해석 - 서울시 저소득 노인밀집지역 무수골을 대상으로 - (Interpretive Approaches to the Characteristics of Neighborhood Environment Using Qualitative GIS of the Elderly's Outdoor Activities - Focused on the Musugol, a Low-Income Elderly Concentrated Area in Seoul -)

  • 선행연구에 따르면 옥외활동은 노인의 신체적, 정신적, 사회적 건강에 긍정적 영향을 미치는 것으로 알려져 있다. 노화가 진행될수록 일상생활이 도보권 내 근린환경과 밀접해지는 가운데, 건강증진을 위한 '활동적 노화'와 '고령친화'는 근린환경에서 실제 이루어지는 옥외활동 수준과 그 인식에 좌우되는 것이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 도시 내 저소득 노인밀집지구의 사례에서 노인의 옥외활동이 근린환경에서 어떻게 이루어지는지 알아보고자 하였다. 또한 옥외활동의 촉진·억제요인이 작용하는 맥락을 시간적·공간적 여건 및 개인적·사회적 여건에 따라 고찰하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 서로 다른 접근방식인 관찰조사와 인지지도 및 심층 인터뷰를 혼합함으로써 질적 GIS 정보를 다각적으로 해석해보았다. 먼저 행태관찰조사를 통해 옥외활동이 이루어지는 주요공간의 활동패턴과 이용자별, 시간대별 특성을 맵핑하여 분석하였다. 또한 거주 노인의 인지지도를 수집하고 주요 외부공간별 근린환경에 대한 인식과 활동목적 등을 인터뷰하여 옥외활동이 이루어지는 상호맥락을 고찰하였다. 연구결과 '시야가 개방'된 쾌적한 공간으로 향하는 '집 바로 앞 골목'의 접근성이나 인지성이 높을 경우 나가고자 하는 욕구가 보다 원활하게 실현되는 것으로 보인다. 노인층에게 '익숙함'이란 것이 매우 중요한 가운데, 공간에 대한 인지성과 접근성을 높임으로써 심리적 경계를 허물어 주는 것이 매우 중요할 것으로 보인다. 또한 사회적 교류와 갈등관계는 노인층의 공간 점유양식에 크게 영향을 미치는 요인으로 확인되었다.

환경 NGO 활동프로그램에 참여하는 농촌지역주민의 동기 유형에 관한 고찰 (Review on Motive Types of Rural Residents' Participation in Environmental NGO Action Program)

  • 본 연구는 참여동기를 유형화한 연구들 중 경제학적인 틀로 참여동기를 유형화한 Olsen의 연구,개인수준에서 사회운동 참여에 영향을 미치는 변수를 고찰한 Klenderman의 연구, 사회발전을 위한 주민 자신의 능동적 역할의 측면에서 본 주민 참여동기를 고찰하여 국내연구에서 가장 널리 구분하는 이기적 참여동기와 이타적 참여동기로 구분하여 고찰하였다. 첫째, 이기적 참여동기는 비용 편익 판단기준을 일반적으로 직업 혹은 경력과 관련시키는 경우가 많다. 이기적 참여동기를 가지고 있는 사람의 보상체계는 단기간에 획득할 수 있는 직접적인 이득이나 다른 사람을 돕는 일이 대부분인 봉사활동인 경우조차도 이기적인 동기가 녹아져 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 젊은층의 사람들은 직장을 구하는데 도움이 될 수 있는 기술을 배우기 위하여 봉사활동에 참여하기도 한다. 이러한 활동참여의 경험이 미래에 직업을 구하거나, 인간관계를 형성한다거나, 좋은 직장을 구하는데 좋은 계기나 기회로 활용되기도 하기 때문인다. 이러한 이기적 동기를 가진 참여자들은 개인의 성장과 직업발전에 큰 관심을 갖고 있으며, 이러한 도구적인 요인이 남을 돕는 요인보다 더 크게 영향을 미치는 것으로 파악되기도 한다. 둘째, 이타적 참여동기는 타인의 복지의 향상을 위해 노력하는 것이다. 이타적 참여동기를 갖고 있는 사람들은 개인의 성과나 개인적인 관심보다는 사회적으로 더 큰 가치가 있는 목적을 추구하는 경향이 있다. 하지만, 이타주의적인 동기를 갖고 있는 사람들이 모두 자신의 희생을 바탕으로 활동을 하거나 자신의 이익에 반하는 행동을 하는 것은 아니다. 즉, 개인의 편익과는 무관하게 도움이 필요한 타인을 돕고 그들의 복지를 증진시키기 위하여 노력하는 것이 이타주의적 참여동기의 큰 특징이라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 이타주의적 참여동기를 갖고 있는 사람들은 자신들의 공헌이 타인의 복지를 향상시킬 가능성이나 개연성만 있더라도 활동에 참여하게 된다. 최근에 동기에 관한 조사들에서 이타적 동기보다는 이기적 동기가 높게 나타나고 있는데(조휘일, 1990; 홍승혜, 1995; 권지성, 1999; 김소영, 2000; 이종혜, 2001; 이근주, 2002; 고운미, 2004), 이는 참여활동가들에게 이타적 동기뿐만 아니라 이기적 동기 또한 중요성이 증가하고 있음을 알 수 있다.
