  • The ultimate goal of environmental education can be said to change students' consciousness and attitude of environment. From this point of view, this study has examined the definition of environment, the necessity of environmental education, the basic principles of environmental education, and significance of teachers in environmental education by surveying previous studies as theoretical background. Then, we have investigated teachers' consciousness and opinion about the real state and problems of present environmental education in schools. The result of this study is as follows. First, though most teachers are conscious of the importance of environmental education in school, they actually cannot practice it because of various preventing factors. Second, for the improvement of teacher's quality, we need studies and trainings on environmental education, Third, as we lack materials and programs necessary for the lectures on environmental education, it is impending to develop and provide it. Fourth, the content and goal of environmental education should be reconstituted and systematized so that they may conform to the viewpoint of students.

  • This study is designed to analyse the difference between consciousness and behaviors for environmental preservation dependant on independent variables and to identify factors that affect the behaviors of environmental preservation. For this study, a questionnaire that included measurements of environmental preservation consciousness and behaviors was produced as a studying tool. Targets were 520 boy and girl students in the second grade of two high schools in Gwangju and three high schools in small districts of Chonnam Province and 482 questionnaires were distributed for the analysis. The data collected was analysed using SAS Program Package to obtain frequency, percentage, standard deviation, and correlation and T-Test One-way ANOVA, Duncan's M411ip1e Range Test, Multiple Regression were performed. The results of the analyses are as follows : 1. Overall, environmental preservation consciousness is higher than preservation behaviors. Interest in air pollution is the highest in both environmental preservation consciousness and behaviors and it is low in recycling. 2. The environmental preservation consciousness has a significant difference dependant on sex, regions, order of birth, educational background of parents and income level. the performing degree of environmental education, consciousness about kinds of environmental preservation, and whether the learning of theory and practice of environmental education is performed. 3. The environmental preservation behaviors has a significant difference dependant on regions, educational background of mother, mother's job, income level, acquiring of information, performing degree of environmental education and consciousness of kinds of environmental education. 4. Variables that affect environmental preservation behavior are environmental preservation consciousness, acquiring information, performing degree of environmental education and awareness of environmental preservation. Their power of explanation is 15%.

  • The purpose of this study is to develope energy eco-audit evaluation scheme for the sustainable energy management at schools in accordance with education for sustainable development. Energy eco-audit evaluation scheme was developed through critical review of preexisting evaluation methods, consensus searching for the process from field. The results of this study are as follows. The school energy eco-audit evaluation scheme has three criteria: data collection, energy program, and environmental review. First, criteria of data collection includes general affairs, school building construction, and energy use. Second, criteria of energy program stresses school administration system such as the democratic decision-making process and structures. Third, criteria of environmental review includes reporting process and preparing teaching/learning materials for sustainable energy management. In conclusion, school energy eco-audit evaluation scheme could find a new way to achieve extended effect for sustainable energy management in school. It also could continue to seek opportunities to raise their awareness of energy issue and environment. School committee and whole school are involved to continue to implement present action plan and prepare updated plan in order to reduce environmental impact in school. By doing so, it would be possible to play important role in both school administration and education for sustainable development.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the concentration of indoor air pollutants at 63 elementary schools, 41 middle schools and 51 high schools in Ulsan from the beginning of May to the end of December, 2008. To assess the indoor air quality of the various classrooms, the 8 indoor air pollutants such as $CO_2$, CO, $NO_2$, $O_3$, $PM_{10}$, TVOCs, HCHO and TBC were measured and analyzed. The mean concentrations of $PM_{10}$ and TBC in the elementary schools were significantly higher than those of middle and high schools (p < 0.01). For the HCHO, the multi-use practice rooms showed an average 1.5 times higher than general classrooms. In schools located in urban areas, the concentrations of CO, $O_3$, $PM_{10}$, HCHO and TBC were lower than in the vicinity of industrial complexes. The exceeding rate of the school air quality maintenance limits in the 6 air pollutants by law were 6.7%, 3.5%, 1.7%, 18.2%, 13.0% and 18.4% for $CO_2$, $NO_2$, $O_3$, $PM_{10}$, HCHO and TBC, respectively. Based on these results $PM_{10}$ and TBC have to be in the order of priority of need to improve the classroom air quality in elementary school of Ulsan.
