  • Much of the increase in agricultural productivity over the past half century has been due to the control of the pests with synthetic pesticides. The use of these pesticides has caused environmental problems and public health concern. The guidelines of maximum residue levels of pesticides in agricultural products has been well documented but more careful monitoring of their residues is required. Pyrethorid class pesticides are dominant in modern agricultural industry but public health concerns have been recently considered. The major route of pesticide exposure is the diet and with improved surveillance of pyrethorid residues in agricultural products their exposure should be controlled and minimized. In suitable products with reduced matrix effects such as agricultural products, aqueous samples, fruits and vegetables the use of immunoassays for pyrethorid residue monitoring could satisfy this requirement. Immunoassays have several advantages, namely they are highly sensitive, selective and cost-effective and enable large-scale sample handling and analysis in the laboratory.

  • To move in unknown or uncertain environment, a mobile robot must collect informations from various sensors and use it to construct a representation of the external world. Ultrasonic sensor can provide range data for this purpose in a simple cost-effective way. However conventional ultrasonic sensor system for a mobile robot are not sufficient for environment recognition because of their large beam opening angle, specular reflection. This paper describe on environmental perception algorithm which can solve these problems in case using ultrasonic sensor. The algorithm consist of two parts. One is to solve beam opening angle problem by fusion from multiple ultrasonic sensors. The other is to cope with specular reflection problem in wall line extract, which is based on Hough Transform. Experiments to verify the validity of the proposed algorithm are carried out, and the results are provided at last part in this paper.

  • As most of environmental impacts caused by development projects are irrevocable, a thorough review is utmost necessary. Ecological-economic integrated approach inspired by Norgaard's co-evolution theory should be applied to the environmentally adjusted CBA, which plays a decisive role in the feasibility analysis. Based on case studies of NamHan River Management Project and Yeongsangang Wetland Reclamation Project, this paper attempts to show the usefulness of linking basic plan and implimentation design to EIA and suggests to integrate EACBA into the current EIA system institutionally as a more effective policy tool for realizing sustainable development in Korea.

경제적 유인제도로서는 UMPS(uniform marketable permit system)와 LMPS(localized marketable permit system) 배출권거래제도를 적용하였다.

  • This paper presents an effective methodology of optimal environmental and economic operation using evolution strategy. In power systems, evolution strategy, based on natural selection and genetics, can analyze non-linear and discontinuous functions in global search techniques. The formulation using this search techniques is multi-objective function, which consists of fuel cost and environmental effects concerning the pollution of the Earth's atmosphere caused by the emission of $SO_2$ and $NO_x$ from thermal generator plants. The proposed algorithms are applied on system with 6 generator.

  • In line with the expected price reduction of natural gas associated with the introduction of shale gas, it is expected that the optimal power mix for the electric power generation be changed. In this study, the reconfigured power mix is estimated with the varying natural gas price by using the Screening Curve Method (SCM). It is found that about 3% and 9% coal in the overall power mix is replaced with natural gas if the natural gas price falls 20% and 40% of the current price, respectively. It is also found that the reconfigured power mixes would provide the reduction of the emissions of air pollutants which are equivalent to 369 and 807 MUS$.

  • Environmental information (temperature, humidity, vibration, $CO_2$, gas leakage, etc.) of building is an essential item to manage and monitor a building. For intelligent building, it is necessary to get temperature and illumination information to save energy and crack information to prevent structural problems. Moreover, temperature and gas leakage information to alarm a tire precaution, or humidity information to maintain comfortable environment. However, there have not been many researches on systems for gathering environmental information and building maintenance due to high costs. In this paper, wireless sensor network technology is applied to collecting building environmental information. Wireless sensor network is one of the latest issues and has low-power consumption, low-cost, self-configuration features.

  • Classical membrane processes like microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) are being applied in the last years more frequently in environmental and effluent process problems. Newer technologies and developments like pervaporation (PV) and gas sepaxation (GS) recently found commercial applications in the treatment of waste waters and gas streams. The incentive here is either the clean-up from organic components to comply with federal emission regulations or the recovery of the organics for economical reasons. Processes still in their development stage are combinations of chemical reactions with membrane processes to separate and treat $SO_x$ and $NO_x$ laden waste gas streams in the clean-up of stack-gases. In this paper we will first give a short overview of the more recent developments in MF, UF and RO. This is followed by a closer look on newer technologies applied in environmental problems. The applications looked at are the recovery of organic components from solvent laden gas streams and the separation of organic volatiles from aqueous waste waters via pervaporation. Technical solutions, the advantages and disadvantages of the processes and. where possible, cost estimations will be presented.

  • For the cost-effective biological nitrogen removal (BNR) process whose characteristics of influent have low COD/N ratios, the automatic control system for the addition of external carbon based on oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) data in an anoxic reactor has been developed. In this study, it was carried out with a pilot-scale Bardenpho process which was consisted of anoxic 1, aerobic 1, aerobic 2, anoxic 2, aerobic 3 tank and clarifier. Firstly, the correlation coefficient ($R^2$) of the dosage of external carbon source and ORP value was about 0.97. Consequently, the automatic control system using ORP showed that the dosage of external carbon source was decreased by about 20% compared with a stable dosage of 75 mg/L based on the COD/N ratio of the anoxic influent.

  • Soil biofiltration is an environmentally-sound technology for elimination of VOCs, odorous and $NO_X$ compounds from a low concentration, high volume waste gas streams because of its simplicity and cost-effectiveness. This study investigated the optimal mixture fraction of briquet ash, compost, soil and loess for $NO_X$ degradation. Extreme vertices design was used to examine the role of four components on $NO_X$ degradation. Under our experimental conditions, 74.5% of $NO_X$ degradation was observed, using a model mixture(25% briquet ash, 10% compost, 30% soil and 40% loess) containing 100 ppb of NO. It was shown that experimental design analysis could allow selecting optimal conditions in such biodegradation processes in this study.
