  • This study was performed to investigate the awareness of an ecological city and its related variables and the willingness to move to an ecological city and its related variables. Data were collected through a questionnaire survey given to 491 residents in Mokpo, Kwangju and Muan in Chollanam Province. Awareness of the ecotogical city was medium level, half of the respondents were not aware of the ecological city. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to estimate the effects of the variables on the awareness of the ecological city. The most significant variable was environmental knowledge. Next, experience in environmental education and homeownership effected on the awareness of the ecological city. Those who knew about environmental pollution and environmental disruption had a self-reported higher degree of awareness of the ecological city. Those who had experience in environmental education as well as those who lived in their own house were more aware of the ecological city. Other variables were not statistically significant. Half of the respondents were willing to move to the ecological city. Seven variables were related with willingness to move to the ecological city. Those who knew about the environmental pollution and environmental disruption preferred to move to the ecological city. Those who lived in multi-housing had more of a willingness to move to the ecological city. People with a higher education as well as the younger group preferred to move to the ecological city. Those who were more aware of the ecological city and had more ecological-oriented values had more willingness to move to the ecological city. Salaried men and professionals were more willing to move to the ecological city than non-employed people. Among those variables environmental knowledge was the only influential variables on willingness to move to the city.

  • Environmental problems in urban spaces tend to result from excessive use of resources faster than the ecosystem can recover itself. In order to address this problem, city or municipal governments tend to devise plans and policies to lead development within their ecological carrying capacity. This study computes ecological capacity of Asan city, Province Chung Nam, South Korea through applying the concept of ecological footprint. This study finds ecological footprint and deficit of Asan city in 2015 were 5.12 and -4.99, respectively. From 2001 to 2015, Asan city experienced not only an 81% increase of ecological footprint, but also a 190% increase of ecological deficit. Such results suggest that Asan city has experienced a steady increase of resource consumption due to population increase and urban growth, indicating that loss of ecological spaces such as green space, farmland, wetland and so on restoring the ecosystem has been accelerated. Therefore, in order to promote sustainable development, Asan city should not only protect green space, farmland, wetland, and so on but also create urban growth plans and policies taking into account its environmental capacity of the city. This study provides suggestions for Asan city to lead urban growth within its environmental capacity by applying ecological deficit.

  • This study aimed to investigate the dilapidated Fine View Square located in the city of Gangneung and analyze problems for building it into a sustainable space under an effective management plan. Further to creating an ecological base for restoring the natural circulation, a restorative method for the damaged area, a spatial assignment by the UNESCO's Man and Biosphere Programme (MAB), and an urban ecological park, we not only wanted to provide an environment that is citizen friendly, but also a practical and realizable project to connect with the various methods and programs mentioned above, while utilizing the Ministry of the Environment 's ecosystem conservation fund. In conclusion, we found that it would be possible to contribute to building an urban ecological park the Ministry of Environment proposed while restoring the lost natural circulation in Gyodong Square in the city of Gangneung and ecological soundness of the city along with the reduced heat island effect and the increased biological diversity and Ecological Soundness.

  • While the ideal universality of the modern period has achieved outstanding results in terms of establishing sanitary cities in contemporary urban environments, it has caused the decline of the genius loci. This study raises the question of the lost sense of place and proposes a solution, 'The Human-Environmental Ecological City'. The Human-Environmental Ecological City, called 'Ecoumenal City', does not provide a fake idealism with the conclusion of modernity of non-place or sense of place without modernity. It is both cosmological and geogenic, and the technology of the time is projected onto it human-environmentally. It does not pursue any more a urban planning as the overall work of an individual, but it aims at a balance rediscovered through the individual spontaneousness.

  • In order to improve the water environment at urban streams in Korea, several river restoration projects have been initiated for past few years. This study evaluates the impact of diverting water application at the riverhead of Onchun stream through the monitoring program for several water quality and ecological parameters. Various water quality parameters and ecological item such as benthic macroinverterates has been investigated between 09/05 and 12/06. Analysis indicates that the application of diverting water from Nakdong river to Onchun stream distinctly improved several water quality parameters such as, PH, BOD, TN, TP and concentrations of heavy metals. Low flow augmentation also improve ecological indicies such as the diversity index of benthic macroinvertebrates. Generally speaking, releasing addition water from head water of Onchun stream improves various water environmental characteristics.

  • Environmental capacity assessment of Busan city was conducted to provide basis for planning on sustainable development and growth of the city. Using Onish model, assessment was carried out on amenities and service facilities for the citizens of Busan city. Ecological Footprint model was used to judge if the city exceeds the its environmental capacity and to estimate the extent of the excess if it exists. The analysis using Onish model revealed that the citizens of Busan city are generally well supported by the infrastructure and service facilities of the city. Water treatment and supply facilities have enough capabilities to support the city, whereas the relatively low rate of sanitary sewer supply (78%) suggests the need for further improvement in the wastewater area. The capacities of sanitary landfills are found sufficient enough to support the city for the next 10 years. The high value for the line length served per capita in the subway sector hints on certain inconvenience of commuters. All the air quality indicators meet the Korean and WHO standards except for $NO_2$. The ecological footprint model analysis produced EF indicators for Busan city of 3.04 ha/person and 2.54 ha/person for the years of 1993 and 2003, respectively. The decrease of the indicator from 1993 to 2003 is mainly due to the incorporation of Gijang area by Busan city in 1995, suggesting the importance of the ecologically productive area in the evaluation using this model. The analysis on the ecological deficit that is based on ecologically productive land shows that the consumption by Busan city exceeds its ecologically available production by 19,600% as of 2003. The area needed to support the consumption of Busan city in 2003 is 123 times as large as the present area of Busan city, which is substantially lower than the multiplier (742) obtained for Seoul city in 1997 but is higher than those observed for Chongju city (71 in 1999) and Ulsan city (39 in 2001).

  • The landscape plannings were composed of the fundamental provisions which are important factors for the city and local plannings in Germany. The State Government run institute like LOLF in NRW have been established to solve the serious ecological problems. The institute have completed the basic system covering various ecological problems, such as environmental affection analysis and ecological risk, to contribute the application of the various land-using plants. The ecological landscape plannings are regarded as major fundamental plans of environmental preservation for the plannings development. The problems about the local landscape plannings needed to be preserved ecologically are introduced into the Federal Nature Preservation Law and State Congress Law in order to carry out the environmental protection policy effectively. The local landscape plannings are divided into two-step models by the special classification system for the planning. One is build-up of an independent design separated from city plans functionally, and the other is a systematic regulation for cooperation between the local plans and ecological conservation functions. The local plannings including lands to be preserved as the Nature Preservatin Zone is classified a rest area total sectioned plains.

  • The quality of urban environment where large population reside is becoming more vitally important than ever. Recently the city of Seoul has launched a 'green city' program converting number of city owned lots into urban parks. In this study, we first investigate four recently opened city parks with water ponds in Seoul. This study then classify these parks according to their respective designs, particularly addressing design and environmental impacts by water features. From these exercises, we derive the following interim findings: 1. Design patterns of waterscape is changing. 2. Water in the city park is a major design feature. 3. Design methodology for city parks must be studied further.

  • The study area investigated in this research is Hwaseong city, Gyeonggi-Do where small scale development is currently in progress. For the last three years, we carried out the environmental and ecological assessment by using data from The Ministry of Environment and Han River Basin Environmental Office. Most of development works in Hwaseong city, Gyeonggi-Do are small scale developments which are related with factory and distribution complex based on individual laws and regulations. However, environmental and ecological assessment is not being sufficiently reflected beforehand. Especially, because the development takes place mainly in the outskirts of the city, the fine forest is continuously being damaged. We analyzed changes in green zone caused by the developments. As a result, the percentage of original green zone was decreasing while the percentage of artificial green zone was increasing. We should maintain the percentage of the original green zone in order to conserve natural environment. In the past three years, the damage of the DGN (Degree of Green Naturality, 7) area that has high conservative value was little, but, there was serious damage in the area of DGN 6. In order to conserve natural environment, political and institutional investigation should be seriously carried out for mitigation of environmental and ecological damages.
