  • Currently, the demand for eco-friendly energy sources is high, which has prompted research on polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. Both aluminum alloys and nickel alloys, which are commonly considered as materials of bipolar plates in fuel cells, oxide layers formed on the metal surface have excellent corrosion resistance. In this research, the electrochemical characteristics of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy and Inconel 600 were investigated with chloride concentrations in an acid environment that simulated the cathode condition of the PEMFC. After potentiodynamic polarization experiments, Tafel analysis and surface analysis were performed. Inconel 600 presented remarkably good corrosion resistance under all test conditions. The corrosion current density of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy was significantly higher than that of Inconel 600 under all test conditions. Also, 6061-T6 aluminum alloy and Inconel 600 presented uniform corrosion and intergranular corrosion, respectively. The Ni, Cr, and Fe, which are the main chemical compositions of Inconel 600, are higher than Al in the electromotive force series. And a double oxide film of NiO-Cr2O3, which is more stable than Al2O3, is formed. Thus, the corrosion resistance of Inconel 600 is better.

  • Food waste is produced from food factories, food services, and home kitchens. The generated mass reached 5.4 million tons/year in 2020. The basic management technology for such waste has been biological degradation under an anaerobic environment. However, the whole process is intrinsically slow and considerably affected by the inner physicochemical properties of the waste and other surrounding conditions, which makes optimization of the process difficult. The most promising options to counter this massive generation of waste are eco-friendly treatments or recycling. As a preliminary step for these options, attempts were made to evaluate the feasibility and usability of three simulative models based on reaction kinetics. Model (A) predicted relative changes over reaction time for reactant, intermediate, and product. Overall, an increased reaction rate produced less intermediate and more product, thereby leading to a shorter total reaction time. Particle diminishing model (B) predicted reduction of the total waste mass. The smaller particles diminished faster along with the dominant effect of microbial reaction. In Model (C), long-chain cellulose was predicted to transform into reducing sugar. At a standard condition, 48% of cellulose molecules having 105 repeating units turned into reducing sugar after 100 h. Also it was found that the optimal enzyme concentration where the highest amount of remnant sugar was harvested was 1 mg L-1.

  • Aluminum 1000 series alloy, a pure aluminum with excellent workability and weldability, is mainly used in the ship field. Aluminum alloy can combine with oxygen in the atmosphere and form a natural oxide film with high corrosion resistance. However, its corrosion resistance and durability are decreased when it is exposed to a harsh environment for a long period of time. For solving this problem, a porous oxide film can be formed on the surface using an anodizing treatment method, a typical surface technique among various methods. In this study, aluminum 1050 alloy was anodized for 2 minutes, 6 minutes, and 10 minutes. The structure and shape of the oxide film were then analyzed to determine the corrosion resistance according to the thickness of the oxide film that changed depending on working condition using 15 wt% NaCl. After it was immersed in NaCl solution for 1, 5, and 10 days, corrosion damage was observed. Results confirmed that the thickness of the oxide film increased as the anodization time became longer. The depth of surface damage due to corrosion became deeper when the film was immersed in the 15 wt% NaCl solution for a longer period of time.

  • Background: Students in the department of dental hygiene are exposed to injections and sharp instruments during clinical practice. Therefore, it is necessary to develop measures for a safe practice environment. This study aimed to investigate dental stabbing accidents caused by dental instruments during clinical practice among students in the department of dental hygiene and suggest appropriate preventative measures. Methods: This study was conducted from May 1 to June 30, 2016, with students in the department of dental hygiene located at several universities in Seoul and Gyeonggi area. The study included 339 participants. A frequency analysis was performed to determine the general characteristics of dental infection control. A cross-analysis was conducted to identify the relationship between dental infection control education, stabbing accident prevention education, and treatment after stabbing accidents with a dental instrument. Results: Among the participants, 81.1% received dental infection control education and 66.4% received stabbing accident prevention education. Only 50.9% received hepatitis B vaccinations. Conclusion: Dental infection control education and stabbing accident prevention education were shown to be effective in preventing dental instrument stabbing in students. However, post-accident processing, such as reporting to upper management and medical treatment after the accident, was insufficient. Therefore, it is necessary to present a treatment flowchart for dealing with stab accidents in clinical practice for students in the department of dental hygiene and strengthen education.

  • This study seeks towards an optimal way to control sulfate ions in semiconductor wastewater effluent with potential eco-toxicity. We developed a system based on ettringite (Ca6Al2(SO4)3(OH)12·26H2O). The basic idea is that the pH of the water is raised to approximately 12 with Ca(OH)2. After, aluminium salt is added, leading to the precipitation of ettringite. Lab-scale batch and continuous experiment results with real semiconductor wastewater demonstrated that 1.5 and 1 of stoichiometric quantities for Ca2+ and A3+ with pH above 12.7 could be considered as the optimal operation condition with 15% of sludge recycle to the influent. A mixed AlCl3 + Fe reagent was selected as the beneficial Al3+ source in ettringite process, which resulted in 80% of sludge volume reduction and improved sludge dewaterability. The results of continuous experiment showed that with precipitation as ettringite, sulfate concentration can be stably reduced to less than 50 mg/L in effluent from the influent 2,050 ± 175 mg/L on average (1,705 ~ 2,633 mg/L).

  • Purpose: This study aims to investigate whether AIS data can be used as a supporting indicator or as an initial signal to describe Indonesia's export-import conditions in real-time. Research design, data, and methodology: This study performs several stages of data selection to obtain indicators from AIS that truly reflect export-import activities in Indonesia. Also, investigate the potential of AIS indicators in producing forecasts of the value and volume of Indonesian export-import using conventional statistical methods and machine learning techniques. Results: The six preprocessing stages defined in this study filtered AIS data from 661.8 million messages to 73.5 million messages. Seven predictors were formed from the selected AIS data. The AIS indicator can be used to provide an initial signal about Indonesia's import-export activities. Each export or import activity has its own predictor. Conventional statistical methods and machine learning techniques have the same ability both in forecasting Indonesia's exports and imports. Conclusions: Big data AIS can be used as a supporting indicator as a signal of the condition of export-import values in Indonesia. The right method of building indicators can make the data valuable for the performance of the forecasting model.

  • One of the problems with abalone farms is that they need to be checked frequently after feeding them or visited once or twice a day and that the amount of food intake constantly fluctuates due to changes in water temperature around the farm and typhoons. In addition, the condition of abalone is not constant as it is divided into places that eat well and do not eat well according to its location. In order to solve this problem, there is a method of measuring the amount of food intake by using a load cell that can measure even the smallest weight in an abalone farm. Through this study, we implemented a system capable of measuring the amount of abalone feed required for systematic management of abalone farms and real-time monitoring using mobile and client PCs.

  • When a recess is applied to a swirl coaxial injector that uses liquid and gas propellants, a self-pulsation phenomenon in which the spray oscillates at regular intervals may occur. The phenomenon is caused by the interaction between the liquid and gas propellants inside the injector recess region. The propellants' kinetic energies are expected to affect significantly the spray oscillation. Therefore, cold-flow tests using helium as a gas-simulating propellant were conducted and compared with the results of the previous study using air. Dynamic pressure was measured in the injector manifold and frequency characteristics were investigated through the fast Fourier transform analysis. In the experimental environment, the helium density was about seven times lower than the air density. Accordingly, the intensity of pressure fluctuations was confirmed to be greater when air was used. At the same kinetic energy condition, the perturbation frequency was almost identical in the low flow rate conditions. However, as the flow rate increased, the self-pulsation frequency was higher when helium was used.

  • Undercutting using an actuated disc cutter (ADC) involves more complex cutting mechanism than traditional rock cutting does, requiring the application of various new cutting parameters, such as eccentricity, cutter inclination angle, and axis rotational speed. This study presents cutting-edge laboratory-scale testing equipment that allows performing ADC tests. ADC tests were carried out on a concrete block with a specified strength of 20 MPa, using a variety of cutting settings that included penetration depth (p), eccentricity (e), and linear velocity (v). ADC, unlike pick and disc cutting, has a non-linear cutting path with a dynamic cutting direction, requiring the development of a new method for predicting cutting force and specific energy. The influence of cutting parameters to the cutter forces were discussed. The ratio of eccentricity to the penetration depth (e/p) was proposed to evaluate the optimal cutting condition. Specific energy varies with e/p ratio, and exhibits optimum values in particular cases. In general, actuated undercutting may potentially give a more efficient cutting than conventional pick and disc cutting by demonstrating reasonably lower specific energy in a comparable cutting environment.
