  • Advances in the technology of computational design are giving architects and engineers the opportunity to analyze buildings with complex geometries. This study explores the optimization and automation process using the parametric design method, and uses digital tools to achieve surface representation and panelization for curved shaped office buildings. In this paper, we propose parametric algorithms of dimensional and geometric constraints using the Knowledge-ware scripts embedded in Gehry Technologies' Digital Project. The knowledge-based design methods proposed in this study can be used to systemize the knowledge possessed by experts in the form of data. Such knowledge is required to promote collaboration between designers and engineers in the process of CAD/CAE/CAM. The aim of this study is to integrate the process into design, which establishes an integrated process. This integration enables two-way feedback between design and construction data by combining the methods used in designing, engineering, and construction.

  • Stereographic method is a general and basic method to analyse sliding failure potential of rock slope. Region of failure analysis using stereographic method extend to curved slope from straight slope in this paper, Curved slope is defined as the multi-face slope with free surface more than two face and has different characteristics from straight single face slope. Individual daylight envelopes of free surfaces are combined into total daylight envelope of multi-face slope. So, sliding envelope of multi-face slope is the daylight envelope except friction cone. Specially, If only single joint set is developed in the slope, single plane sliding(or plane failure) is impossible in the single-face straight slope, but possible in the multi-face slope. In the multi-face slope with only one joint set, single plane sliding occurs when orientation of sliding plane is between two side slope orientation in the sliding envelope.

  • Autophagy is a tightly regulated lysosome-mediated catabolic process in eukaryotes that maintains cellular homeostasis. A distinguishable feature of autophagy is the formation of double- membrane structures, autophagosome, which envelopes the intracellular cargoes and finally degrades them by fusion with lysosomes. So far, many structures of Atg proteins working on the autophagosome formation have been reported, however those involved in autophagosome maturation, a fusion with lysosome, are relatively unknown. One of the molecules in autophagosome maturation, TECPR1, has been identified and recently, structural studies on both ATG5-TECPR1 and ATG5-ATG16L1 complexes revealed that TECPR1 and ATG16L1 share the same binding site on ATG5. These results, in combination with supporting biochemical and cellular biological data, provide an insight into a model for swapping ATG5 partners for autophagosome maturation.

  • Effects of fuel injection timing on the lean misfire limit of a sequential MPI SI engine has been investigated. To investigate the interaction of injection timing and intake flow characteristics, so called axial stratification phenomena, 4 kinds of different intake swirl port of the same combustion chamber geometry have been teated in a single cylinder engine test bench. And 2 kinds of fuel, gasoline and compressed natural gas(CNG), were used to see the effect of liquid fuel vaporization. Result shows that combination of port swirl and injection timing governs the lean misfire limit and lean misfire limit envelopes remain almost the same for a given ratio regardless of engine speed. It is also found that two phase flow has some effects on lean misfire limit.

  • We model dust around Herbig Ae/Be stars using a radiative transfer model for multiple isothermal circumstellar dust shells to reproduce the multiple broad peaks in their spectral energy distributions (SEDs). Using the opacity functions for various types of dust grains at different temperatures, we calculate the radiative transfer model SEDs for multiple dust shells. For eight sample stars, we compare the model results with the observed SEDs including the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) and AKARI data. We present model parameters for the best fit model SEDs that would be helpful to understand the overall structure of dust envelopes around Herbig Ae/Be stars. We find that at least four separate dust components are required to reproduce the observed SEDs. For all the sample stars, two innermost dust components (a hot component of 1000-1500 K and a warm component of 300-600 K) with amorphous silicate and carbon grains are needed. Crystalline dust grains (corundum, forsterite, olivine, and water ice) are needed for some objects. Some crystalline dust grains exist in cold regions as well as in hot inner shells.

  • The aim of this paper is to develop the B & B type algorithms for globally minimizing concave function under 0-1 knapsack constraint. The linear convex envelope underestimating the concave object function is introduced for the bounding operations which locate the vertices of the solution set. And the simplex containing the solution set is sequentially partitioned into the subsimplices over which the convex envelopes are calculated in the candidate problems. The adoption of cutting plane method enhances the efficiency of the algorithm. These mean valid inequalities with respect to the integer solution which eliminate the nonintegral points before the bounding operation. The implementations are effectively concretized in connection with the branching stategys.

  • We have computed the model spectra for the novae that formed dust grains shortly after their explosions. And the results are closely compared with recent infrared observational data. The amorphous carbon grains appear to be the major component for the carbon-rich novae. And the silicate grains which reside in Mira variables are found to be the best candidate material for the oxygen-rich novae. In novae, the winds from the central stars are very strong and fast so the emergent spectra are highly dependent on the time scales of dust formation. We find optically thin dustemission for oxgen-rich novae because they have longer time-scales of dust formation and the dust shells with larger radii.

  • Windborne debris is a major cause of structural damage during severe windstorms and hurricanes owing to its direct impact on building envelopes as well as to the 'chain reaction' failure mechanism it induces by interacting with wind pressure damage. Estimation of debris risk is an important component in evaluating wind damage risk to residential developments. A debris risk model developed by the authors enables one to analytically aggregate damage threats to a building from different types of debris originating from neighboring buildings. This model is extended herein to a general debris risk analysis methodology that is then incorporated into a vulnerability model accounting for the temporal evolution of the interaction between pressure damage and debris damage during storm passage. The current paper (Part I) introduces the debris risk analysis methodology, establishing the mathematical modeling framework. Stochastic models are proposed to estimate the probability distributions of debris trajectory parameters used in the method. It is shown that model statistics can be estimated from available information from wind-tunnel experiments and post-damage surveys. The incorporation of the methodology into vulnerability modeling is described in Part II.

  • We have modeled the observed spectral energy distributions(SEDs) of young stellar objects (YSOs) in giant molecular clouds (GMCs). We propose the theoretical modles for the dust envelopes around YSOs. The YSOs in a GMC may share the same initial chemical composition. In this paper, we compare the model SEDs with the observations of the YSOs. Dust shells of the YSOs are composed of a mixture of astronomical silicate and graphite grains. We propose the models for the evolution of the GMCs comparing the shape of the SEDs on the IRAS 2-color diagram with the age.

  • The behaviour of an unsaturated soil was analyzed by performing $K_0$ consolidated triaxial tests. Unsaturated triaxial tests were performed with matric suctions for weathered soils and could catch stress paths under consolidation and stress-strain relationships under shear. As a result, both isotropic and $K_0$ conditions had similar shear strength envelopes in the same matric suction. Especially, strength parameters could obtain by stress variables based on critical state theory reasonably which was better than those by Mohr circles at failure.
