In this paper the biaxial failure criteria and stress-strain response for plain concrete are studied under uniaxial and biaxial stress(compression-compression, compression-tension, and tension-tension combined stress). The concrete specimens of a square plate type are used for uniaxial and biaxial loading. The experimental data indicate that the strength of concrete under biaxial compression, f2/fl=-l/-1, is 17 percent larger than under uniaxial compression and the poisson's ratio of concrete is 0.1745. On the base of the results, a biaxial failure envelope for plain concrete that the uniaxial strength is 398kgf/$cm^{2}$ are developed. The biaxial failure behaviors for three biaxial loading areas are also plotted respectively. In addition, the characteristics of stress-strain response under biaxial compression are compared and verified with the experimental and analytical results.

The characteristics and prediction model for the shear strength of unsaturated residual soils was studied. In order to investigate the influence of the net normal stress on the shear strength, unsaturated triaxial tests and SWCC tests were carried out varying the net normal stress, and the experimental data for unsaturated shear strength tests were compared with predicted shear strength envelopes using existing prediction models. It was shown that the soil - water characteristic curve and the shear strength of the unsaturated soil varied with the change of the net normal stress. Therefore, to achieve a truly descriptive shear strength envelope for unsaturated soils, tile effect of the normal stress on the contribution of matric suction to the shear strength has to be taken into consideration. In this paper, a modified prediction model for the unsaturated shear strength was proposed.

Regarding to the project SUAV (Smart Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) in KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute), several engine configurations has been evaluated. However it's not an easy task to collect all the necessary data of each engine for the analysis. Usually, some kind of modeling technique is required in order to determine the unknown data. In the present paper a qualitative method for reverse engineering is proposed, in order to identify some design patterns and relationships between parameters. The method can be used to estimate several parameters that usually are not provided by the manufacturer. The method consists of modeling an existing engine and through a simulation, compare its transient behavior with its operating envelope. In the simulation several parameters such as thermodynamics, performance, safety and mechanics concerning to the definition of operation-envelope, have been discussed qualitatively. With the model, all engine parameters can be estimated with acceptable accuracy, making possible the study of dependencies among different parameters such as power-turbine total inertia, TIT, take-off time and part load, in order to check if the engine transient performance is within the design criteria. For more realistic approach and more detailed design requirements, it will be necessary to enhance the compressor map first, and more realistic estimated values must be taken into account for intake-loss, bleed-air and auxiliary power extraction. The relative importance of these “unknown” parameters must be evaluated using sensitivity analysis in the future evaluation. Moreover, fluid dynamics, thermal analysis and stress analysis necessary for the resulting life assessment of en engine, will not be addressed here but in a future paper. With the methodology presented in the paper was possible to infer the relationships between operation-envelope and engine parameters.
The study of the mechanical behavior of rockfill materials under three-dimensional loading conditions is a current research focus area. This paper presents a microscale numerical study of rockfill deformation and strength characteristics using the Combined Finite-Discrete Element Method (FDEM). Two features unique to this study are the consideration of irregular particle shapes and particle crushability. A polydisperse assembly of irregular polyhedra was prepared to reproduce the mechanical behavior of rockfill materials subjected to axial compression at a constant mean stress for a range of intermediate principal stress ratios in the interval [0, 1]. The simulation results, including the stress-strain characteristics, relationship between principal strains, and principal deviator strains are discussed. The stress-dilatancy behavior is described using a linear dilatancy equation with its material constants varying with the intermediate principal stress ratio. The failure surface in the principal stress space and its traces in the deviatoric and meridian plane are also presented. The modified Lade-Duncan criterion most closely describes the stress points at failure.

The moment-curvature envelope describes the changes in the flexural capacity with deformation during a nonlinear analysis. Therefore, the moment-curvature analysis for reinforced concrete columns, indicating the available flexural strength and ductility, can be conducted providing the stress-strain relation for the concrete and steel are known. The moments and curvatures associated with increasing flexural deformations of the column may be computed for various column axial loads by incrementing the curvature and satisfying the requirements of strain compatibility and equilibrium of forces. Clearly it is important to have accurate information concerning the complete stress-strain curve of confined high-strength concrete in order to conduct reliable moment-curvature analysis to assess the ductility available from high-strength columns. However, it is not easy to explicitly characterize the mechanical behavior of confined high-strength concrete because of various parameter values, such as the confinement type of rectilinear ties, the compressive strength of concrete, the volumetric ratio and strength of rectangular ties, etc. So a stress-strain confinement model is developed which can simulate a complete inelastic moment-curvature relations of a high-strength reinforced concrete column

Polymer-Impregnated Concrete(PIC) can be considered composite material of concrete and polymer and has superior properties compared to conventional cement concrete, such as strength, stiffness, toughness, durability, water-proofing, chemical resistance. However, so far, the usage of PIC has been limited to repairing materials and non-structural applications, due to the lack of the design criteria and the analytical model to determine structural behavior. The objective of this study is to define the stress-strain response and strength characteristics of PIC in uniaxial and various biaxial compressive loading. On the bases of experimental results, general stress-strain relation, biaxial failure envelope and strength evaluation formular of PIC made with normal aggregate and methylmethacrylate(MMA) are proposed.
Clearly it is important to have accurate information concerning the complete stress-strain curve of confined high-strength concrete in order to conduct reliable moment-curvature analysis that assesses the ductility available from high-strength concrete columns. However, it is not easy to explicitly characterize the mechanical behavior of confined high-strength concrete because of various parameter values, such as the confinement type of rectilinear ties, the compressive strength of concrete, the volumetric ratic and strength of rectangular ties. So a stress-strain model is developed which can simulate complete inelastic moment-curvature relations of high-strength concrete columns.
The thermomechanical characteristics of rocks such as temperature dependency of strength and deformation were experimentally investigated using Iksan granite, Cheonan tonalite and Chung-ju dolomite for proper design and stability analysis of underground structures subjected to temperature changes. For the temperature below critical threshold temperature $T_c$, the variation of uniaxial compressive strength, Young's modulus, Brazilian tensile strength and cohesion with temperature were slightly different for each rock type, but these mechanical properties decreased at the temperatures above $T_c$ by the effect of thermal cracking. Tensile strength was most affected by $T_c$, and uniaxial compressive strength was least affected by $T_c$. To the temperature of 20$0^{\circ}C$ with the confining prressure to 150 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, failure limit on principal stress plane and failure envelope on $\sigma$-$\tau$ plane of Iksan granite were continuously lowered with increasing temperature but those of Cheonan tonalite and Chung-ju dolomite showed different characteristics depending on minor principal stress on principal stress plane and normal stress on $\sigma$-$\tau$ plane. The reason for this appeared to be the effect of rock characteristics and confining pressure. Young's modulus was also temperature and pressure dependent, but the variation of Young's modulus was about 10%, which was small compared to the variation of compressive strength. In general, Young's modulus increased with increasing confining pressure and increased or decreased with increasing temperature to 20$0^{\circ}C$ depending on the rock type.

The dynamic stress intensity factors (DSIF ; $K_{I}$$^{dyn}$) were studied in some polymeric materials using caustics method with a high speed camera system. Also crack tip propagation speed was measured by dynamic crack propagation velocity measuring device. To calculate DSIF a finite element analysis program-INha Stress Analysis Moving CRack(INSAMCR) was utilized. Dynamic fracture characteristics were investigated to verify a relationship between DSIF and crack tip propagation speed and acceleration in PMMA, Homalite-100 and Polycarbonate. The relationship between dynamic stress intensity factor and crack tip velocity revealed typical shapes. Measured crack tip acceleration data envelope converges to the zero level with increasing DSIF. Equivalently crack tip velocities show a wide spread range at low values of DSIF, but become a constant with a higher DSIF. $1.2MPa{\sqrt{m}}$, $1.4MPa{\sqrt{m}}$ and $1.3 MPa{\sqrt{m}}$ were obtained as $K_{I}$$^{dyn}$ values to arrest the dynamic crack for PMMA, Homalite-100 and Polycarbonate, respectively. INSAMCR was run to verify experimental results in PMMA and shows good agreementment.
Experimental investigation into the cyclic behaviour of sand plast brick masonry was performed on forty two square panels. The panels were subjected to cyclic uniaxial compression for two cases of loading: normal to bed joint and parallel to bed joint. Experimental data were used to plot the unloading-reloading curves for the entire range of the stress-strain curve. Mathematical expressions to predict the reloading and unloading stress-strain curves at various values of residual strain are proposed. A simple parabola and an exponential type formula are found adequate to model the unloading and reloading curves respectively. The models account for the potential effects of residual strain on these curves. Comparison of test results with the proposed mathematical expression shows good correspondence.
