A CPFD (Computational particle fluid dynamics) model of solar fluidized bed receiver of silicon carbide (SiC: average dp=123 ㎛) particles was established, and the model was verified by comparing the simulation and experimental results to analyze the effect of particle behavior on the performance of the receiver. The relationship between the heat-absorbing performance and the particles behavior in the receiver was analyzed by simulating their behavior near bed surface, which is difficult to access experimentally. The CPFD simulation results showed good agreement with the experimental values on the solids holdup and its standard deviation under experimental condition in bed and freeboard regions. The local solid holdups near the bed surface, where particles primarily absorb solar heat energy and transfer it to the inside of the bed, showed a non-uniform distribution with a relatively low value at the center related with the bubble behavior in the bed. The local solid holdup increased the axial and radial non-uniformity in the freeboard region with the gas velocity, which explains well that the increase in the RSD (Relative standard deviation) of pressure drop across the freeboard region is responsible for the loss of solar energy reflected by the entrained particles in the particle receiver. The simulation results of local gas and particle velocities with gas velocity confirmed that the local particle behavior in the fluidized bed are closely related to the bubble behavior characterized by the properties of the Geldart B particles. The temperature difference of the fluidizing gas passing through the receiver per irradiance (∆T/IDNI) was highly correlated with the RSD of the pressure drop across the bed surface and the freeboard regions. The CPFD simulation results can be used to improve the performance of the particle receiver through local particle behavior analysis.
Gasification technology is one of the representative next-generation fossil fuel utilization technologies, converting low grade fossil fuels such as coal, heavy residue oil, pet-coke into highly clean and efficient energy sources. Accordingly, related market demand for gasification technology is ever increasing steadily and rapidly. A few years ago, conventional pulverized coal utilization technology had an edge over the gasification technology but the most significant technical barrier of limited capacity and availability has been largely overcome nowadays. Futhermore, it will be more competitive in the future with the advancement of related technologies such as gas turbine, ion transfer membrane and so on. China has recently completed a commercialization-capable large-scale coal gasification technology for its domestic market expansion and foreign export, rapidly becoming a newcomer in the field and competing with existing US and EU technical leadership at comparable terms. Techno-economic aspect deserves intensive attention and steady R&D efforts need to continue in organized, considering that gasification technology is quite attractive combined with $CO_2$ capture process and coal to SNG plant is economically viable in Korea where natural gas is very expensive. In the present paper, recent technology development and commercialization trend of many leading companies with coal gasification expertise have been reviewed with significant portion of literature cited from the recently held '2014 Gasification Technology Conference'.

In order to investigate devolatilization characteristics for ashless coal with relatively low ash content and high heating value, an experiment was performed in different bed configurations of TGA and DTF(Drop Tube Furnace) at atmospheric pressure condition. The heating rate was $10^{\circ}C$/min up to $950^{\circ}C$ in TGA, while the temperatures of DTF varied from 500 to $1300^{\circ}C$ in step of $200^{\circ}C$. A weight loss and particle temperature were obtained to determine devolatilization kinetics. The kinetic parameters including an activation energy and pre-exponential factor for ashless coal were obtained using Coats-Redfern method in TGA and single step method in DTF. Furthermore, the devolatilization kinetics of the ashless coal were compared with the results of different kinds of conventional coal such as sub-bituminous and bituminous. The results show that the activation energy of devolatilazation for ashless coal is lower than those of others in fixed and entrained conditions.
In general, the circulation path of the fluidized particles in a CFB (Circulating Fluidized Bed) boiler is such that the particles entrained from a combustor are collected by a cyclone and recirculated to the combustor via a sealpot which is one of non-mechanical valves. However, when a fluidized bed heat exchanger (FBHE) is installed to additionally absorb heat from the fluidized particles, some particles in the sealpot pass through the FBHE and then flow into the combustor. At this time, in the FBHE operated in the bubbling fluidization regime, if the heat flow is not evenly distributed by poor mixing of the hot particles (800~950 ℃) flowing in from the sealpot, the heat exchanger tubes would be locally heated and then damaged, and the agglomeration of particles could also occur by formation of hot spot. This may affect the stable operation of the circulating fluidized bed. In this study, the unevenness of heat flow arising from structural problems of the FBHE of the domestic D-CFB boiler was found through the operating data analysis and the CPFD (Computational Particle Fluid Dynamics) simulation using Barracuda VR. Actually, the temperature of the heat exchanger tubes in the FBHE showed the closest correlation with the change in particle temperature of the sealpot. It was also found that the non-uniformity of the heat flow was caused by channeling of hot particles flowing in from the sealpot. However, it was difficult to eliminate the non-uniformity even though the fluidizing velocity of the FBHE was increased enough to fluidize hot particles vigorously. When the premixing zone for hot particles flowing in from the sealpot is installed and when the structure is changed through the symmetrization of the FBHE discharge line for particles reflowing into the combustor, the particle mixing and the uniformity of heat flow were found to be increased considerably. Therefore, it could be suggested that the structural modification of the FBHE, related to premixing and symmetric flow of hot particles, is an alternative to reduce the non-uniformity of the heat flow and to minimize the poor particle mixing.
In this study, co-combustion characteristics of Chinese bituminous coal and North Korean anthracite were investigated using a 2 MWe scale circulating fluidized bed power plant. At first, the combustion efficiency of bituminous coal of China and Australia as a function of excess air ratio and temperature were observed. The results showed that the combustion efficiency was influenced by particle size and volatile content of coal, the combustion efficiency of Chinese bituminous coal was over 99.5%. The unburned carbon particles from fly ash and bottom ash were a content 5~7% and 0.3%, respectively. The combustion efficiency with the mixture ratio 20% of bituminous coal and anthracite decreased over 5% because of the increase of entrained particles by a small average particle size of anthracite in the combustor. However, the outlet concentration of $SO_2$ and $NO_x$ was not changed remarkably. The concentrations of the typical air pollutants such as $NO_x$ and $SO_2$ were 200~250 ppm($O_2$ 6%), 100~320 ppm($O_2$ 6%) respectively. The outlet concentration of $NO_x$ was decreased to 30~65% with $NH_3$ supplying rate of 2~13 l/min in SCR process. The $SO_x$ removal efficiency was up to 70% by in-furnace desulfurization using limestone with Ca/S molar of approximately 6.5. With wet scrubbing using $Mg(OH)_2$ as absorbent, the $SO_x$ removal efficiency reached 100% under near pH 5.0 of scrubbing liquid.
This study was conducted for engineering optimization for the gasification process which is the key factor for success of Taean IGCC gasification plant which has been driven forward under the government support in order to expand to supply new and renewable energy and diminish the burden of the responsibility for the reduction of the green house gas emission. The gasification process consists of coal milling and drying, pressurization and feeding, gasification, quenching and HP syngas cooling, slag removal system, dry flyash removal system, wet scrubbing system, and primary water treatment system. The configuration optimization is essential for the high efficiency and the cost saving. For this purpose, it was designed to have syngas cooler to recover the sensible heat as much as possible from the hot syngas produced from the gasifier which is the dry-feeding and entrained bed slagging type and also applied with the oxygen combustion and the first stage cylindrical upward gas flow. The pressure condition inside of the gasifier is around 40~45Mpg and the temperature condition is up to $1500{\sim}1700^{\circ}C$. It was designed for about 70% out of fly ash to be drained out throughout the quenching water in the bottom part of the gasifier as a type of molten slag flowing down on the membrane wall and finally become a byproduct over the slag removal system. The flyash removal system to capture solid particulates is applied with HPHT ceramic candle filter to stand up against the high pressure and temperature. When it comes to the residual tiny particles after the flyash removal system, wet scurbbing system is applied to finally clean up the solids. The washed-up syngas through the wet scrubber will keep around $130{\sim}135^{\circ}C$, 40~42Mpg and 250 ppmv of hydrochloric acid(HCl) and hydrofluoric acid(HF) at maximum and it is turned over to the gas treatment system for removing toxic gases out of the syngas to comply with the conditions requested from the gas turbine. The result of this study will be utilized to the detailed engineering, procurement and manufacturing of equipments, and construction for the Taean IGCC plant and furthermore it is the baseline technology applicable for the poly-generation such as coal gasification(SNG) and liquefaction(CTL) to reinforce national energy security and create new business models.
As a way to evaluate the performance of IGCC (Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle) processes, heating values of coal gas as well as plant efficiency were compared for different rank coals and coal feeding methods by employing the static process simulation technique. Performance of the process was compared with coal rank that was varied by three assorted bituminous coals and also by three subbituminous coals, in addition to the two types of feeding techniques, i.e., dry-feeding and slurry-feeding, that are utilized in entrained-bed coal gasifiers. For the verification of the simulation technique, simulated results were compared first with the actual pilot plant data published from Shell and Texaco. The simulation technique was, then, applied to other coals. Result from tests varying coal rank exhibits the trend of improving both heating content of the product gas and plant efficiency with increasing carbon content in coal. The effect of coal rank is more sensitive in slurry-feeding cases compared to the dry-feeding cases. In particular, considering notably lower values in gas heating value and plant efficiency calculated in the slurry-feeding case that uses a subbituminous coal, limited utilization of the slurry-feeding method for subbituminous coals can be expected. From the plant efficiency point of view, dry-feeding method resulted in higher simulated efficiency values by maximum 3% for subbituminous coals and ca. l% for bituminous coals.
Coal gasification is considered as one of the best alternatives among clean coal technology and new concept next generation technologies are under being developed to achieve low cost as well as high efficiency. In this study we have developed double swirl multi-burner as part of the development of low cost compact gasifier. We installed new concept multi-burner with pulverized coal distributor to the body of existing gasifier for burner test. Gasification test was performed under the condition of $6.4{\sim}7.2kg/cm^2$ and $1170{\sim}1300^{\circ}C$ by using Indonesian ABK (sub-bituminous) coal to get operation condition of new concept multi-burner. Our interest was focused to ensure a stable operating condition rather than the gasifier performance evaluation. As a result, we were able to achieve the carbon conversion of 84% and the cold gas efficiency of 52.1% at the stable operating conditions.
To assess the reliability of chronobiological models of sleep/wake regulation, it is necerssary that the models predict the data which has been studied in sleep research, and they should be generalized across all ages. To date, many adult human data on such models have accumulated, yet it is evident that a comprehensive theory of the biorhythmic aspects of sleep/wake states has not established. Circadian rhythms such as the time going to bed, sleep onset, slow wave sleep pressure, periodicity of REM sleep, daytime performance, and early evening alertness are resumed everyday. Even in adult humans, sleep is inherently polyphasic. In both the disentrained and entrained states, naps when allowed tend to recur in a temporally lawful manner. The monophasic sleep pattern of most industrial societies therefore appears to be purely of social origin. The endogenous biorhythmic nature of circasemidian sleep tendency is supported by the ubiquity of the phenomenon across all ages. The NREM/REM sleep cycle within sleep with its inherent physiological, endocrine, and neurochemical fluctuations represents the best-documented ultradian sleep rhythms. Also, a daytime ultradian variation in sleepiness with a periodicity similar to nocturnal NREM/REM cycle(BRAC hypothesis) is suggested. This review article provides a brief synoptic review of the evidences for circadian, circasemidian, and ultradian sleep/wake rhythms, and then the authour will suggest the issues which expedite fuller modeling of sleep/wake system, to be further discussed.

Coal gasification technology is considered as next generation clean coal technology even though it uses coal as fuel which releases huge amount of greenhouse gas because it has many advantages for carbon capture. Coal or pet-coke slurry gasification is very attractive technology at present and in the future because of its low construction cost and flexibility of slurry feeding system in spite of lower efficiency compared to dry feeding technology. In this study, we carried out gasification experiment using bituminous coal slurry sample by integrating coal slurry feeding facility and slurry burner into existing dry feeding compact gasifier. Especially, our experiment was conducted under fairly lower operation temperature than that of existing entrained-bed gasifier, resulting in partial slagging operation mode in which only part of ash was converted to slag and the rest of ash was released as fly ash. Carbon conversion rate was calculated from data analysis of collected slag and ash, and then cold gas efficiency, which is the most important indicator of gasifier performance, was estimated by carbon mass balance method. Fairly high performance considering pilot-scale experiment, 98.5% of carbon conversion and 60.4% of cold gas efficiency, was achieved. In addition, soundness of experimental result was verified from the comparison with chemical equilibrium composition and energy balance calculations.
