  • There are some modified methods such as K-means Clustering Particle Swarm Optimization and Niching Particle Swarm Optimization based on PSO which aim to locate all optima in multimodal functions. K-means Clustering Particle Optimization could locate all optima of functions with finite number of optima. Niching Particle Swarm Optimization is able to locate all of optima but high computing time. Because of those disadvantages, we proposed a new method that could locate all of optima with reasonal time. We applied our method and others as well to analytic functions. By comparing the outcomes, it is shown that our method is significantly more effective than the two others.

  • Topology optimization method has a great advantage and capability over a conventional shape optimization technique because it optimizes a topology as well as a shape and size of structure. The purpose of the present study, using topology optimization method with an objective function of minimum compliance as a mechanism of bone remodeling, is to examine which shape factors of femur is strongly related with the curvature of femoral shaft. As is expected, the optimized curvature increased definitely with neck angle among the shape factors and showed a similar trend with the measured curvature to neck angle. Therefore, the topology optimization method can be successfully applied in the analysis of bone remodeling phenomenon in the subsequent studies.

  • Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells (PEFCs) operate in wide-range changes in temperature, humidity, and electric current for automotive applications. In order to operate automotive PEFC efficiently, optimal air supply is required to adjust to these changes. This paper presents an air-supply optimization process that consists of experiments, modeling of the PEFC system, and optimization. The objective is to establish an air supply suitable for the required power for PEFC system and optimized with a Lagrange multiplier. Our simplified PEFC system model is used as a constraint for optimization problem. The result of this paper presents that efficient operation of PEFC system can be achieved by air-supply optimization.

  • This paper addresses minimum-fuel, two-dimensional trajectory optimization for a soft lunar landing from a parking orbit to a desired landing site. The landing site is usually not considered when performing trajectory optimization so that the landing problem can be handled. However, for precise trajectories for landing at a desired site to be designed, the landing site has to be considered as the terminal constraint. To convert the trajectory optimization problem into a parameter optimization problem, a pseudospectral method was used, and C code for feasible sequential quadratic programming was used as a numerical solver. To check the reliability of the results obtained, a feasibility check was performed.

  • Topology optimization. has been evolved into a very efficient conceptual design tool and has been utilized into design engineering processes in many industrial parts. In recent years, topology optimization has become the focus of structural optimization design and has been researched and widely applied both in academy and industry. Traditional topology optimization has been using homogenization method and optimality criteria method. Homogenization method provides relationship equation between structure which includes many holes and stiffness matrix in FEM. Optimality criteria method is used to update design variables while maintaining that volume fraction is uniform. Traditional topology optimization has advantage of good convergence but has disadvantage of too much convergency time and additive checkerboard prevention algorithm is needed. In one way to solve this problem, element remove method is presented. Then, it is applied to many examples. From the results, it is verified that the time of convergence is very improved and optimal designed results is obtained very similar to the results of traditional topology using 8 nodes per element.

  • Metaheuristic algorithm is used to solve the weight minimization problem of truss structures considering shape, and sizing design variables. The cross-sectional areas of the line element in trusses are the design variables for size optimization and the changeable joint coordinates are the shape optimization used in this study. The design of plane and spatial truss structures are optimized by metaheuristic technique named Teaching-Learning-Based Optimization (TLBO). Finite element analyses of structures and optimization process are carried out by the computer program visually developed by the authors coded in MATLAB. The four benchmark problems (trusses 2D ten-bar, 3D thirty-seven-bar, 3D seventy-two-bar and 2D two-hundred-bar) taken from literature are optimized and the optimal solution compared the results given by previous studies.

  • This paper presents topology optimization of geometrically and materially nonlinear structures using a bi-directional evolutionary optimization (BESO) method. To maximum the stiffness of nonlinear structures under prescribed design load, the complementary work is selected as the objective function of the optimization. An optimal design can be obtained by gradually removing inefficient material and adding efficient ones. The proposed method can be applied to a series of geometrically and/or materially nonlinear structures. The results show considerable differences in topologies and stiffness of the optimal designs for linear and nonlinear structures. It is found that the optimal designs for nonlinear structures are much stiffer than those for linear structures when large design loads (which result in significantly nonlinear deformations) are applied.

  • Many real world optimization problems are discrete and multi-valued. Meta heuristics including Genetic Algorithm and Particle Swarm Optimization have been effectively used to solve these multi-valued optimization problems. However, extensive comparative study on the performance of these algorithms is still required. In this study, performance of these algorithms is evaluated with multi-modal and multi-dimensional test functions. From the experimental results, it is shown that Discrete Particle Swarm Optimization (DPSO) provides better and more reliable solutions among the considered algorithms. Also, additional experiments shows that solution quality of DPSO is not lowered significantly when bit size representing a solution increases. It means that bit representation of multi-valued discrete numbers provides reliable solutions instead of becoming barrier to performance of DPSO.

  • This paper presents a modified and improved bi-directional evolutionary structural optimization (BESO) method for topology optimization. A sensitivity filter which has been used in other optimization methods is introduced into BESO so that the design solutions become mesh-independent. To improve the convergence of the optimization process, the sensitivity number considers its historical information. Numerical examples show the effectiveness of the modified BESO method in obtaining convergent and mesh-independent solutions. A study of the effects of various BESO parameters on the solution is then conducted to determine the appropriate values for these parameters.

  • A LCD glass plate is supported by multi-pin and golf-tee type support. In the FEM analysis, the support condition is treated as simply supported boundary .condition. In this study, the optimization on the location of multi-simply support is conducted. The size optimization method of ANSYS 8.0 is used as the optimization tool to search for the optimal support location of LCD glass plate. In the manufacturing process, the support condition is a fatal factor of quality control of LCD production. From the results of optimization, deflection decreases 51% compared with the original model.
