  • The structural adhesive have been manufactured for improvement of bonding process between CFRP and metal. The optimal condition for bonding process were investigated by evaluating the lap shear strength with amount of adhesive and curing time and the surface treatment of the CFRP. To confirm proper adhesion conditions, the fracture sections between CFRP and metal was observed using reflection microscope. Not only the improvement of the adhesion condition was important, but surface treatment on CFRP was also important. The optimal curing temperature was at $180^{\circ}C$ for 20 minutes. The improvement for adhesive property was confirmed After surface treatment on CFRP. The optimal amount of structural adhesive for bonding between CFRP and metal was $1.5{\times}10^{-3}g/mm^2$. Through the optimization of bonding process, the improvement of mechanical property over 10% is confirmed in comparison with existing adhesive.

  • This study evaluated the applicability of the Modified Bartlett-Lewis Rectangular Pulse (MBLRP) rainfall generation model for modeling extreme rainfalls and floods in Korean Peninsula. Firstly, using the ISPSO (Isolated Species Particle Swarm Optimization) method, the parameters of the MBLRP model were estimated at the 61 ASOS (Automatic Surface Observation System) rain gauges located across Korean Peninsula. Then, the synthetic rainfall time series with the length of 100 years were generated using the MBLRP model for each of the rain gauges. Finally, design rainfalls and design floods with various recurrence intervals were estimated based on the generated synthetic rainfall time series, which were compared to the values based on the observed rainfall time series. The results of the comparison indicate that the design rainfalls based on the synthetic rainfall time series were smaller than the ones based on the observation by 20% to 42%. The amount of underestimation increased with the increase of return period. In case of the design floods, the degree of underestimation was 31% to 50%, which increases along with the return period of flood and the curve number of basin.

  • This research utilized the manual to calculate the structural scale of stone and gabion, which was developed through comparison and verification of the results drawn by hydraulic model experiment and existing empirical formula. Appropriate structural scale of stone according to the construction site when the critical velocity was exceeded, utilizing the previously expected and recorded data on current velocity per day and per hour during the final closure period for Saemangeum sea dike. Also, the scale of rocks was presented, considering the altercation in water depth according to the construction. The developed manual offered appropriate rate of mixed use of stone and gabion that suits various flow velocities, which will minimize any loss of stone-gabion and contribute to successful final closure, and proved the utility and application of the manual.

  • To improve the $NO_X$ conversion over a SCR (selective catalytic reduction) catalyst, the DOC (diesel oxidation catalyst) is usually placed upstream of the SCR catalyst to enhance the fast SCR reaction ($4NH_3+2NO+2NO_2{\rightarrow}4N_2+6H_2O$) using equimolar amounts of NO and $NO_2$. Here, a ratio of $NO_2/NO_X$ above 50% should be avoided, because the reaction with $NO_2$ only ($4NH_3+4NO+O_2{\rightarrow}4N_2+6H_2O$) is slower than the standard SCR reaction ($4NH_3+4NO+O_2{\rightarrow}4N_2+6H_2O$). In order to accurately predict the performance characteristics of SCR catalysts, it is therefore desired to develop a more simple and reliable mathematical and kinetic models on the oxidation kinetics of nitric oxide over a DOC. In the present work, the prediction accuracy and limit of three different chemical reaction kinetics models are presented to describe the chemicophysical characteristics and conversion performance of DOCs. Steady-state experiments with DOCs mounted on a light-duty four-cylinder 2.0-L turbocharged diesel engine then are performed, using an engine-dynamometer system to calibrate the kinetic parameters such as activation energies and preexponential factors of heterogeneous reactions. The reaction kinetics for NO oxidation over Pt-based catalysts is determined in conjunction with a transient one-dimensional (1D) heterogeneous plug flow reactor (PFR) model with diesel exhaust gas temperatures in the range of 115~$525^{\circ}C$ and space velocities in the range of $(0.4{\sim}6.5){\times}10^5\;h^{-1}$.

  • In the present study, a recuperator to improve the thermal efficiency of a micro gas turbine is considered. The counter flow plate-fin heat exchanger with offset strip fins is chosen as the type of the recuperator. From the optimization study as varying design parameters of the recuperator determined from the ideal cycle analysis, the internal structure of the recuperator is determined. The recuperator is made from stainless steel 304. In order to evaluate performance of the recuperator, experimental investigation is performed. The effects of inlet temperature of hot-side of the recuperator on the thermal performance of the recuperator are investigated. As a result, effectiveness of the recuperator obtained from the experiments is well consistent with that obtained from the correlations.

  • Thin-film chromel-alumel multijunction thermal converters with a low output resistance of $64{\sim}85\;{\Omega}$ showed approximately the square law-dependent input-output relation. The voltage responsivities were very low with $0.34{\sim}0.67\;V/W$ in air and $1.15{\sim}1.48\;V/W$ in vacuum, respectively, and the ac-dc voltage transfer error was very large with about +340 ppm in the frequency range of $40\;Hz{\sim}10\;kHz$ in the case of 1 V-input sinewave rms voltage. It can be concluded that the large transfer error of the thermal converter was mainly caused by the low voltage responsivity and the large heat loss due to low output resistance, which implies that the optimization for small ac-dc transfer error is required.

  • In this study, an EP (electro-polishing)-MAP (magnetic abrasive polishing) hybrid process was developed as a precision finishing process. To evaluate the characteristics of this EP-MAP hybrid process, a series of experiments were carried out using various working gaps, current densities, and electrolyte concentrations. As a result, $NaNO_3$ was found to be very suitable as the electrolyte of the hybrid process because there was no electrochemical reaction with the CNT-Co composite. Moreover, an increase in the magnetic flux density affected the liquidity of the electrolyte and prevented it from flowing into the CNT-Co composite powder. For that reason, the lower liquidity of the electrolyte increased the thermal energy on the surface of the workpiece.

  • PMS(Pavement Management System) has been developed and/or operated for the freeway and national highway systems in Korea. There is, however, no municipal PMS that is necessary in many cities for efficient management of their roadways. In this study, a municipal Prototype PMS is developed. The Prototype PMS is designed to be operated on PC base. It uses GIS interface for user friendliness that applies color graphics, text and distress pictures to display pavement conditions and rehabilitation information for both current and historical situations. The computer program of the prototype PMS consists of four major functions(inquiry, analysis, data management, and print). Especially, prioritization and M&R(Maintenance and Rehabilitation) alternative selection procedure is designed to be flexible so that the users can modify the decision criteria whenever it is necessary. Database items of the Prototype PMS is carefully selected for the objectives and size of municipal PMS. Reference point method is basically used for the location referencing in the Database. The unit section consists of each loom segment of the road for effective management.

  • PURPOSES : The Toll Collection System (TCS) operated by the Korea Expressway Corporation provides accurate traffic counts between tollgates within the expressway network under the closed-type toll collection system. However, although origin-destination (OD) matrices for a travel demand model can be constructed using these traffic counts, these matrices cannot be directly applied because it is technically difficult to determine appropriate passenger car equivalent (PCE) values for the vehicle types used in TCS. Therefore, this study was initiated to systematically determine the appropriate PCE values of TCS vehicle types for the travel demand model. METHODS : To search for the appropriate PCE values of TCS vehicle types, a traffic demand model based on TCS-based OD matrices and the expressway network was developed. Using the traffic demand model and a genetic algorithm, the appropriate PCE values were optimized through an approach that minimizes errors between actual link counts and estimated link volumes. RESULTS : As a result of the optimization, the optimal PCE values of TCS vehicle types 1 and 5 were determined to be 1 and 3.7, respectively. Those of TCS vehicle types 2 through 4 are found in the manual for the preliminary feasibility study. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the given vehicle delay functions and network properties (i.e., speeds and capacities), the travel demand model with the optimized PCE values produced a MAPE value of 37.7%, RMSE value of 17124.14, and correlation coefficient of 0.9506. Conclusively, the optimized PCE values were revealed to produce estimates of expressway link volumes sufficiently close to actual link counts.

  • The land use-transportation models typically have complicated model structure that is good for empirical execution but bad for theoretical probe. This complexity makes it very difficult to derive the first-order conditions for system optimization in tractable forms. Yu and Rhee (2011) and Rhee (2012) show how to simplify the derivative of the model's objective function with respect to policy variables in the computable general equilibrium model of land use and transportation. However, the travel demand in their model was fixed. This drawback fundamentally limits the applicability of their methodology in the planning field. We relax this restriction. Once this is done, we can employ the methodology developed in analyzing the impacts of various types of policy instruments in the models where land market is treated endogenously and transportation network is embedded.
