  • Powder characteristics, such as density, size, shape, thermal properties, and surface area, are of significant importance in the powder bed fusion (PBF) process. The powder required is exclusive for an efficient PBF process. In this study, the particle size distribution suitable for the powder bed fusion process was derived by modeling the PBF product using simulation software (GeoDict). The modeling was carried out by layering sintered powder with a large particle size distribution, with 50 ㎛ being the largest particle size. The results of the simulation showed that the porosity decreased when the mean particle size of the powder was reduced or the standard deviation increased. The particle size distribution of prepared titanium powder by the atomization process was also studied. This study is expected to offer direction for studies related to powder production for additive manufacturing.

  • This study investigates the properties of a high-performance cementitious composite with partial substitution of stone dust for fine aggregate. The relationship between the properties and particle size distribution was analyzed using several analytical models. Experiments were carried out to examine the flowability, rheology, and strength of cement mortars with different stone-dust replacement ratios of 0-30 wt.%. The results showed improved flowability, lower rheological parameters (yield stress and plastic viscosity), and improved strength as the amount of stone dust increased. These results are closely related to the packing density of the solid particles in the mortar. The effect was therefore estimated by introducing an optimum particle size distribution (PSD) model for maximum packing density. The PSD with a higher amount of stone dust was closer to the optimum PSD, and the optimization was quantified using RMSE. The improvement in the PSD by the stone dust was proven to affect the flowability, strength, and plastic viscosity based on several relevant analytical models. The reduction in yield stress is related to the increase of the average particle diameter when using stone dust.

  • This study examined the toughness improvement of a track shoe used as the undercarriage of excavator and bulldozer parts. The excavator is operated under poor conditions, such as the build-up field and quarry. Therefore, the track shoe requires high strength and impact toughness to endure immense shock while at work. The track shoe was made of heat treated boron steel. The sufficient possibility of hardenability with the theoretical Jominy curve for boron steel was confirmed while quenching. The Taguchi orthogonal array experiment method was used to optimize the process variables, such as area reduction ratio and heat treatment conditions (tempering temperature and holding time), to achieve toughness improvement. The toughness of the track shoe increased with increasing area reduction, and a tempering temperature of $210^{\circ}C$ and a tempering time of 80 min are beneficial for improving the toughness of the track shoe.

  • We have developed a robotic system for an automated parallel cell cultivation process that enables screening of induction parameters for the soluble expression of recombinant protein. The system is designed for parallelized and simultaneous cultivation of up to 24 different types of cells or a single type of cell at 24 different conditions. Twenty-four culture vessels of about 200 ml are arranged in four columns${\times}$six rows. The system is equipped with four independent thermostated waterbaths, each of which accommodates six culture vessels. A two-channel liquid handler is attached in order to distribute medium from the reservoir to the culture vessels, to transfer seed or other reagents, and to take an aliquot from the growing cells. Cells in each vessel are agitated and aerated by sparging filtered air. We tested the system by growing Escherichia coli BL21(DE3) cells harboring a plasmid for a model protein, and used it in optimizing protein expression conditions by varying the induction temperature and the inducer concentration. The results revealed the usefulness of our custom-made cell cultivation robot in screening optimal conditions for the expression of soluble proteins.

  • The content of taxol in the bark of yews is very low, and this is not affordable from the environmental point of view. Thus, it is a necessity to look for alternative sources of taxol production to solve its supply. Currently, a large portion of the taxol in the market comes from chemical semi-synthesis, but the semi-synthetic precursors such as baccatin III and 10-deacetyl-baccatin III are extracted from needles and twigs of yew trees. Taxol-producing fungi as a renewable resource is a very promising way to increase the scale of taxol production. Our group has obtained a taxol-producing endophytic fungus, Aspergillus niger subsp. taxi HD86-9, to examine if A. niger can produce the taxanes. Six compounds from the fermentation broth of strain HD86-9 were isolated and identified by $^1H$ NMR, $^{13}C$ NMR, and ESI-MS. The results showed that the six compounds included four taxane diterpenoids (taxol, cephalomannine, baccatin III, and 10-deacetyl-baccatin III) and two non-taxane compounds (${\beta}-sitosterol$ and flavonoid isovitexin). The study verified that the taxanes can be produced by the A. niger, which is very important to taxol production via chemical semi-synthesis. Additionally, the finding is potentially very significant to solve the taxol semi-synthetic precursors extracted from needles and twigs of yew trees, and the precursor production can be easily increased through the culture condition optimization, genetic breeding, and metabolic engineering of the A. niger.

  • Membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology has previously been used by water industry to treat high salinity wastewater. In this study, an anoxic-oxic biofilm-membrane bioreactor (AOB-MBR) system has been developed to treat mustard tuber wastewater of 10% salinity (calculated as NaCl). To figure out the effects of operating conditions of the AOB-MBR on membrane fouling rate ($K_V$), response surface methodology was used to evaluate the interaction effect of the three key operational parameters, namely time interval for pump (t), aeration intensity ($U_{Gr}$) and transmembrane pressure (TMP). The optimal condition for lowest membrane fouling rate ($K_V$) was obtained: time interval was 4.0 min, aeration intensity was $14.6 m^3/(m^2{\cdot}h)$ and transmembrane pressure was 19.0 kPa. And under this condition, the treatment efficiency with different influent loads, i.e. 1.0, 1.9 and $3.3kgCODm^{-3}d^{-1}$ was researched. When the reactor influent load was less than $1.9kgCODm^{-3}d^{-1}$, the effluent could meet the third discharge standard of "Integrated Wastewater Discharge Standard". This study suggests that the model fitted by response surface methodology can predict accurately membrane fouling rate within the specified design space. And it is feasible to apply the AOB-MBR in the pickled mustard tuber factory, achieving satisfying effluent quality.

  • In this study, the emission rate of pollutant was modified according to the published standards, and the distribution of pollutant concentration was analyzed for each vehicle velocity. This modified emission rate was applied to a model tunnel and it was proved that the required air quantity was reduced to 49%, compared to the PIARC method. From the simulation result, it was proved by using statistics that the most sensitive factor among them is the friction coefficient and it was modified to the value in the range of 0.018 to 0.021. It is also expected that the required air quantity can be decreased form 14.4% to 19.2% according as the coefficient is applied to the domestic model tunnels. In conclusion, it is proposed that the number of jet fans can be reduced and the annual operating cost can be curtailed as well.

  • Recently, interest in the development of alternative water resources has been increasing rapidly due to environmental pollution and depletion of water resources. In particular, seawater desalination has been attracting the most attention as alternative water resources. As seawater desalination consumes a large amount of energy due to high operating pressure, many researches have been conducted to improve energy efficiency such as energy recovery device (ERD). Consequently, this study aims to compare the energy efficiency of RO process according to ERD of isobaric type which is applied in scientific control pilot plant process of each $100m^3/day$ scale based on actual RO product water. As a result, it was confirmed that efficiency, mixing rate, and permeate conductivity were different depending on the size of the apparatus even though the same principle of the ERD was applied. It is believed that this is caused by the difference in cross-sectional area of the contacted portion for pressure transfer inside the ERD. Therefore, further study is needed to confirm the optimum conditions what is applicable to the actual process considering the correlation with other factors as well as the factors obtained from the previous experiments.

  • This study applied the fuzzy logic control for the construction of the reservoir operation model which can consider uncertainty of the predicted inflow in determining reservoir release during flood period. The control rule is usually constructed based on the opinion of experts which is a general technique. To improve the drawback of general technique, this study constructed the Fuzzy-Tabu search model automatically established by the fuzzy rule using Tabu search which is a global optimization technique. As the results, the peak release is decreased and the flood control efficiency is improved. The total release is also decreased and this represents the benefit in water use. Consequently, it is confirmed that the effect of flood control can be increased through the constructed model. It also shows that the available water resources after the flood is more increased. So, the proposed Fuzzy-Tabu search model could be better than the actual reservoir operation methodology in the aspect of water use.

  • In this paper, we analysed what effect the design variables, such as refractive index, central thickness and radius of curvature, had on the first order properties and image quality of optical systems when temperature changed. The optical parameters were varied at each temperature, then the coupling and ruler methods were used to design an athermalized lens for a phone camera. This concept was first used to design the lens for a 1/3.2" 5M phone camera. The designed lens satisfies all the specifications for a phone camera, and the variations of the back focal length(${\Delta}BFL$) are reduced to $10{\mu}m$ for a temperature range of $-10^{\circ}C$ to $+60^{\circ}C$. Also, the TTL of 5.5 mm results in a compact system. All design concepts and results discussed in this paper are expected to be useful in development for the phone and CCTV camera.
