  • Recently, the quantities of chemical material are increasing in chemical industries. At that time, release accident is increasing due to aging of equipment, mechanical failure, human error, etc. and industrial complexes found community properties in a specific area. For that matter, chemical release accident can lead to hight probability of large disaster. There is a need to analyze the boundaries optimal sensor placement calculated by selecting release scenarios through release condition and wether condition in a chemical process for release detection and response. This paper is to investigate chlorine release accident scenarios using COMSOL. Through accident scenarios, a numerical calculation is studied to determine optimized sensor placement with weight of detection probability, detection time and concentration. In addition, validity of sensor placement is improved by robustness analysis about unpredicted accident scenarios. Therefore, this verifies our studies can be effectively applicable on any process. As mention above, the result of this study can help to place mobile sensor, to track gas release based concentration data.

  • A bacterium capable of emulsifying hydrocarbon, n-hexadecane, and decreasing surface tension of the culture media using oil collapsing method was isolated. The bacterium was partially identified as Bacillus sp. and named BJS-51. n-Hexadecane was the most effective carbon source for production of biosurfactant. Surface tension was decreased from 76 dyne/cm to 31 dyne/cm and CMD (critical micelle dilution) had the highest value of 5.7 at 3% n-hexadecane. Ammonium phosphate was the most effective nitrogen source, when C/N ratio was 60, surface tension and CMD were 29 dyne/cm and 9.2, respectively. Optimum pH and temperature were 7.2 and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. Produced biosurfactant was extracted and purified using organic solvent extraction method and preparative HPLC systems. After analysis by various color reaction, this biosurfactant was identified as lipopolysaccharide. Surface tension and CMC (critical micelle concentration) of purified biosurfactant were 27 dyne/cm and 0.08 g/l, repectively. CMD was 9.2, so the yield of biosurfactant was about 0.74 g/l at the optimal conditions. The biosurfactant was very stable at wide range of $pH\;2{\sim}12$ with surface tension $29{\sim}31\;dyne/cm$ and showed $29{\sim}30\;dyne/cm$ of surface tension after heat treatment at $100^{\circ}C$ for 60 min.

  • The operation of a reservoir system is necessary for establishing the operation rule as well as designing the reservoirs for water resources planning or management. Increasingly complex water resource systems require more advanced operation techniques. As a result, various techniques have been introduced and applied until now. In this study Linear Tracking model based on optimal control theory is applied to the operation of the largest scale multi-reservoir system in the Han river and its applicability proved. This system normally supplies the water resources required downstream for hydro-power and plays a role in satisfying the water demand of the Capital region. For the optimal use of the water resources the Linear Tracking model is designed with the objective to maximize the hydro-power energy subject to the water supply demand. The multi-reservoir system includes the seven main reservoirs in IIan river such as Hwachon, Soyanggang, Chunchon, Uiam, Cheongpyong, Chungju and Paldang. These reservoirs have been monthly operated for the past 21 years. Operation results are analyzed with respect to both hydro"power energy and water supply. Additionally the efficiency of the technique is assessed.sessed.

  • Cone-beam digital tomosynthesis (CBDT) has greatly been paid attention in the image-guided radiation therapy because of its attractive advantages such as low patient dose and less motion artifact. Image quality of tomograms is, however, dependent on the imaging conditions such as the scan angle (${\beta}_{scan}$) and the number of projection views. In this paper, we describe the principle of CBDT based on filtered-backprojection technique and investigate the optimization of imaging conditions. As a system performance, we have defined the figure-of-merit with a combination of signal difference-to-noise ratio, artifact spread function and floating-point operations which determine the computational load of image reconstruction procedures. From the measurements of disc phantom, which mimics an impulse signal and thus their analyses, it is concluded that the image quality of tomograms obtained from CBDT is improved as the scan angle is wider than 60 degrees with a larger step scan angle (${\Delta}{\beta}$). As a rule of thumb, the system performance is dependent on $\sqrt{{\Delta}{\beta}}{\times}{\beta}^{2.5}_{scan}$. If the exact weighting factors could be assigned to each image-quality metric, we would find the better quantitative imaging conditions.

  • Recently, there has been a keen demand for real-time automatic monitoring of VOCs not only in Korea but other developed countries. We carried out this study to evaluate and to optimize the performance of a continuous automatic monitoring system for hazardous VOCs (HVOCs) in the ambient atmosphere, using an on-line GC system. The online system normally consisted of a Nafion dryer prior to a cold trap of an automatic thermal desorption apparatus and a GC system equipped with two detectors, i.e. PID and ECD. Preliminary tests conducted to check out any contamination of the system revealed an evidence of significant artifact formation of benzene, and it was found that the Nafion dryer (even brand new one) is the source of the benzene artifact. Thus, all the subsequent experiments in this study was carried out inevitably by removing the Nafion dryer. The on-line GC method was investigated with a variety of QC/QA performance criteria such as repeatability, linearity, lower detection limits, and accuracy. In order to find out the best operating condition for the on-line GC system, three different types (in terms of adsorption strength) of cold trap combinations were tested, i.e. (i) Tenax-TA and Carbopack-B combination (weak and hydrophobic); (ii) Tenax-TA, Carbopack-X and Carboxen-1000 combination (strong and hydrophilic); and (iii) Tenax-TA and Carbopack-X combination (medium and hydrophobic/hydrophilic). The USEPA TO-17 manual method was selected as a reference method to evaluate the performance of the on-line method. A series of experiments revealed that the system performance was superior to others when a cold trap packed with hydrophilic adsorbents (Tenax-TA/Carbopack-X/Carboxen-1000 combination) was used and operated at $25^{\circ}C$. However, the system with a cold trap packed with a combination of Tenax-TA and Carbopack-X is more recommended for field applications since the carboxen-1000 adsorbent is too sensitive to water vapor, and hence the performance of the system might be very unstable to humid samples or during rainy days. Furthermore, the precision and accuracy criteria of the Tenax-TA/ Carbopack-X combination were generally compatible with the triple adsorbents cold trap. The continuous automatic monitoring method is, thus, considered very useful to real-time monitoring to understand the variations of VOCs concentrations in ambient air, as it adopts much simpler procedures in sampling, analysis, and data integration steps than manual monitoring methods. However, it should be noted that there is a high possibility of benzene artifacts formation through the Nafion dryer, which is often installed to remove water vapor in air samples before being adsorbed onto the cold trap. Therefore, if a Nafion dryer is used in any studies of monitoring VOCs, the benzene contamination should be carefully examined before carrying out obtaining the data.

  • This study introduce that we studied optimization and possibility of smoke spread prevention with air-curtain system in undersea tunnel named from Ho-Nam to Jeju line in domestic if a fire break out in train. To verify performance, air-curtain system is installed between rescue station platform and each door of passenger car to provide safety route to evacuator and we studied simulation model of various cases about 15 MW fire severity considering domestic specifications. As a result we verified the fact that CASE1(air jet with 15degree toward passenger car) and CASE 5 (air jet with 15degree toward passenger car and pressure air blast from cross passage) is best Smoke Spread Prevention and less inflow carbon monoxide. Through above results, we expect that air-curtain system is one of the facilities for fire safety and provide us safety platform route in undersea tunnel.

  • This study discussed the optimal use of bentonite and cement for the compacted soil liner of landfill. Techniques employed in this optimization included permeability(by KSF 2322) and compressive strength(by KSF 2314). The optimal amount of these materials to the compacted soil liner was determined in accordance with a regulatory guideline of the government: that is, $k=1{\times}10^{-7}cm/sec$. The testing sods were CL(Clayey Soil) and SM(Sandy Soil), which were classified according to LSCS(Unifed Soil Classify System), The results showed that the optimal amounts of bentonite and cement to mix with the compacted CL soil liner were 5% of bentonite and 5% of cement : namely, $k=9.98{\times}10^{-8}cm/sec$ and ${\sigma}_{28}=1275kg/cm^2$. For the compacted SM soil liner. the optimal amount of bentonite was 15%, in conjunction with 5% of cement : namely, $k=9.86{\times}10^{-8}cm/sec$ and ${\sigma}_{28}=18.72kg/cm^2$. It was concluded that the compacted CL or SM soil liner, with containing the optimal amounts of bentonite and cement showed the acceptable permeability and the compressive strength, referring to a regulatory guideline of the government for construction of the landfill.

  • To increase the efficiency of esterase production by Bacillus, high cell-density culture of recombinant Escherichia coli through fed batch fermentation was tested. Cells were cultured to $OD_{600}$ of 76 (35.8 g/l DCW) with dissolved oxygen level controlled to least above 30% air saturation by supplying pure oxygen. Cells were cultured to an $OD_{600}$ of 90 (42.4 g/l DCW) with glucose feeding controlled to at least 1 g/l. However, the cells reached stationary phase at the late stage of culture, despite glucose being supplied. Cells were cultured to an $OD_{600}$ of 185 (87.3 g/l DCW) by supplying additional medium with fortified yeast extract. To increase the productivity of the recombinant protein, cell growth and esterase productivity based on induction time were evaluated. Late exponential phase induction for esterase production in fed batch fermentation resulted in maximum optical density $OD_{600}$ of 190 (89 g/l DCW) and maximum esterase activity of 1745 U/l, corresponding to a 5.8-fold enhancement in esterase production, compared to the early exponential phase induction. In this study, we established fermentation methods for achieving maximum production of Bacillus-derived esterase by optimizing IPTG induction time in high-cell density culture by supplying pure oxygen and a nitrogen source.

  • Nanoscale zero valent iron (nZVI) has been intensively studied for the treatment of a plethora of pollutants through reductive reaction, however, the nano size should be of concern when nZVI is considered for water treatment, due to difficulties in recovery. The loss of nZVI causes not only economical loss, but also potential risk to human health and environment. Thus, the immobilization onto coarse or structured support is essential. In this study, two representative processes for nZVI immobilization on granular activated carbon (GAC) were evaluated, and optimized conditions for synthesizing Fe/GAC composite were suggested. Both total iron content and $Fe_0$ content can be significantly affected by preparation processes, therefore, it was important to avoid oxidation during preparation to achieve higher reduction capacity. Synthesis conditions such as reduction time and existence of intermediate drying step were investigated to improve $Fe_0$ content of Fe/GAC composites. The optimal condition was two hours of $NaBH_4$ reduction without intermediate drying process. The prepared Fe/GAC composite showed synergistic effect of the adsorption capability of the GAC and the degradation capability of the nZVI, which make this composite a very effective material for environmental remediation.
