  • Ship owners now demand a new design approach for the rudder that considers detailed design information such as maneuverability and environmental loads etc. on a quantified basis. In this paper, we developed the concept of a safe operation capability chart for the design of a rudder area. The chart can be used as the basis of design considering the maneuverability and environmental loads. To confirm the applicability of the safe operation capability chart for use as the basis of design, four different rudders are assumed in this work. First, it is determined whether or not it is appropriate to design a rudder by applying a conventional design approach based on IMO maneuvering tests. The proposed concept is reviewed for use as the basis of the design by investigating the effect of rudder area on capability charts that are plotted according to the rudder under various environmental conditions.

  • Portfolio management deals with decision making on 'when' and 'how' to revise an existing portfolio. In this paper, we show that a classical statistical process control (SPC) chart for normal data, a wellestablished tool in quality engineering, can effectively be used for signaling times for revising a portfolio. Noting that the day-to-day performance of a portfolio may be auto-correlated, we use the exponentially weighted moving average center-line chart to develop an automatic portfolio management procedure. The portfolio management procedure is extensively tested on historical data of equities traded in the Korea Exchange (KRX), the American Stock Exchange (AMEX), and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). In comparison with the performances of the KOSPI, XAX, and NYA indices during the same time periods, results from these experiments show that SPC chart-based portfolio revision presents itself a convenient and reliable method for optimally managing portfolios.

  • This paper proposes the CPM bar chart (CBC), a hybrid of the bar chart and the critical pad method (CPM). The CBC overcomes shortages of the fenced bar chart, while still keeping advantages. The fence with direction is applied instead of the broken fence, which triggers considerable problems to identify and apply in the fenced bar chart. In addition, the notorious task to find dummy activities is no longer required. Upon the benefits of simplicity in the bar chart and logical work sequence in the CPM network. the CBC provides a relatively easy way to create and understand a schedule, thus improving communication quality between project participants. With the advantages, the CBC can also be effectively applied to various scheduling techniques such as resource constrained scheduling, resource leveling, scheduling with activity split, delay impact analysis, etc.

  • Control chart is representative tools of statistical process control (SPC). It is a graph that plotting the characteristic values from the process. It has two steps (or Phase). First step is a procedure for finding a process parameters. It is called Phase I. This step is to find the process parameters by using data obtained from in-controlled process. It is a step that the standard value was not determined. Another step is monitoring process by already known process parameters from Phase I. It is called Phase II. These control chart is the process quality characteristic value for management, which is plotted dot whether the existence within the control limit or not. But, this is not given information about the economic loss that occurs when a product characteristic value does not match the target value. In order to meet the customer needs, company not only consider stability of the process variation but also produce the product that is meet the target value. Taguchi's quadratic loss function is include information about economic loss that occurred by the mismatch the target value. However, Taguchi's quadratic loss function is very simple quadratic curve. It is difficult to realistically reflect the increased amount of loss that due to a deviation from the target value. Also, it can be well explained by only on condition that the normal process. Spiring proposed an alternative loss function that called reflected normal loss function (RNLF). In this paper, we design a new control chart for overcome these disadvantage by using the Spiring's RNLF. And we demonstrate effectiveness of new control chart by comparing its average run length (ARL) with ${\bar{x}}-R$ control chart and expected loss control chart (ELCC).

  • Unlike building construction projects, where the activity is repeatedly carried out in a limited area, civil engineering projects such as roads and railroads are carried out in a linear type in a horizontal working space over several tens of kilometers. Each activity is managed with a station number that has a unit of distance from the starting point to the end point. For this reason, since the work location information of the activity is a major management factor, the Gantt chart system that expresses only schedule information may have limitations. In this study, authors propose a method for constructing a linear schedule chart that can simultaneously express schedule information indicating the start and finish dates and location information indicating the start and end positions of each activity, and develop a system for generating a linear schedule chart. In the study, the coordinate axes of the linear schedule chart consisted of distance and date values on the X and Y axes, respectively, and each activity was expressed as a symbol that can infer the type of work to increase the visibility of the linear schedule chart compared to the simple bar chart method. The linear schedule chart generation system was reviewed for practical applicability by utilizing the actual schedule data of bridge structures in a railroad project.

  • Purpose: This paper proposes a VSS(Variable Sample Size) ${\bar{X}}$ control chart using surrogate variable and shows its effectiveness compared with FSS(Fixed Sample Size) ${\bar{X}}$ control chart using either performance variable or surrogate variable. Methods: The expected cost function of VSS ${\bar{X}}$ control chart is derived. The optimal designs are then found for numerical examples using a GA(genetic algorithm) and compared to those of the FSS ${\bar{X}}$ control charts. Results: Computational results show that VSS ${\bar{X}}$ control chart using surrogate variables is superior to FSS ${\bar{X}}$ control chart using either performance variable or surrogate variable from the economic view points. Conclusion: The proposed VSS ${\bar{X}}$ control chart will be useful in industry fields where a performance variable is not avaliable or too costly.

  • This paper proposes a selectively cumulative sum(S-CUSUM) control chart for detecting shifts in the process mean. The basic idea of the S-CUSUM chart is to accumulate previous samples selectively in order to increase the sensitivity. The S-CUSUM chart employs a threshold limit to determine whether to accumulate previous samples or not. Consecutive samples with control statistics out of the threshold limit are to be accumulated to calculate a standardized control statistic. If the control statistic falls within the threshold limit, only the next sample is to be used. During the whole sampling process, the S-CUSUM chart produces an 'out-of-control' signal either when any control statistic falls outside the control limit or when L -consecutive control statistics fall outside the threshold limit. The number L is a decision variable and is called a 'control length'. A Markov chain approach is employed to describe the S-CUSUM sampling process. Formulae for the steady state probabilities and the Average Run Length(ARL) during an in-control state are derived in closed forms. Some properties useful for designing statistical parameters are also derived and a statistical design procedure for the S-CUSUM chart is proposed. Comparative studies show that the proposed S-CUSUM chart is uniformly superior to the CUSUM chart or the Exponentially Weighted Moving Average(EWMA) chart with respect to the ARL performance.

  • Statistical control charts are useful tools to monitor and control the manufacturing processes and are widely used in most Korean industries. Many Korean companies, however, do not always obtain desired results from the traditional control charts by Shewhart such as the $\bar{X}$-chart, $\bar{X}$-chart, $\bar{X}$-chart, etc. This is partly because the quality charterstics of the process are not distributed normally but are skewed due to the intermittent production, small lot size, etc. In Shewhart $\bar{X}$-chart. which is the most widely used one in Kora, such skewed distributions make the plots to be inclined below or above the central line or outside the control limits although no assignable causes can be found. To overcome such shortcomings in nonnormally distributed processes, a distribution-free type of confidence interval can be used, which should be based on order statistics. This thesis is concerned with the design of control chart based on a sample median which is easy to use in practical situation and therefore properties for nonnormal distributions may be easily analyzed. Control limits and central lines are given for the more famous nonnormal distributions, such as Gamma, Beta, Lognormal, Weibull, Pareto, Truncated-normal distributions. Robustness of the proposed median control chart is compared with that of the $\bar{X}$-chart; the former tends to be superior to the latter as the probability distribution of the process becomes more skewed. The average run length to detect the assignable cause is also compared when the process has a Normal or a Gamma distribution for which the properties of X are easy to verify, the proposed chart is slightly worse than the $\bar{X}$-chart for the normally distributed product but much better for Gamma-distributed products. Average Run Lengths of the other distributions are also computed. To use the proposed control chart, the probability distribution of the process should be known or estimated. If it is not possible, the results of comparison of the robustness force us to use the proposed median control chart based oh a normal distribution. To estimate the distribution of the process, Sturge's formula is used to graph the histogram and the method of probability plotting, $\chi$$^2$-goodness of fit test and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, are discussed with real case examples. A comparison of the proposed median chart and the $\bar{X}$ chart was also performed with these examples and the median chart turned out to be superior to the $\bar{X}$-chart.

  • Markovian EWMA control chart for simultaneously monitoring mean vector of the several correlated quality characteristics is investigated. Properties of multivariate Shewhart chart and EWMA chart are evaluated for matched FSI (fixed sampling interval) and VSI(variable sampling interval) scheme. We obtained VSI EWMA chart is more efficient than Shewhart chart for small or moderate shifts. And, we obtained stablized numerical results with Markov chain method when the number of transient state is greater than 100.

  • In the manufacturing process the most widely used $\bar{X}$ chart has been applied to control the process mean. Also, Accelerated Life Test(ALT) is commonly used for efficient assurance of product life in development phases, which can be applied in production reliability acceptance test. When life data has lognormal distribution, through censored ALT design so that censored ALT data has asymptotic normal distribution, $ALT\bar{X}$ control chart integrating $\bar{X}$ chart and ALT procedure could be applied to control the mean of process in the manufacturing process. In the situation that process variation is controlled, $Z_p$ control chart is an effective method for the very small fraction nonconforming of quality characteristic. A simultaneous control scheme with $ALT\bar{X}$ control chart and $Z_p$ control chart is designed for the very small fraction nonconforming of product lifetime.
