Accelerated Test Design for Crankshaft Reliability Estimation

  • Crankshaft, the core element of the engine of a vehicle, transforms the translational motion generated by combustion to rotational motion. Its failure will cause serious damage to the engine so its reliability verification must be performed. In this study, the S-N data of the bending and torsion fatigue limits of a crankshaft are derived. To evaluate the reliability of the crankshaft, reliability verification and analysis are performed. For the purpose of further evaluation, the bending and torsion tests of the original crankshaft are carried out, and failure mode analysis is made. The appropriate number of samples, the applied load, and the test time are computed. On the basis of the test results, Weibull analysis for the shape and scale parameters of the crankshaft is estimated. Likewise, the $B_{10}$ life under 50% of the confidence level and the MTTF are exactly calculated, and the groundwork for improving the reliability of the crankshaft is laid.

  • The prospect of Arctic trade transportation opening on a year-round basis creates a vast opportunity of exploring untapped resources and shortened navigational routes. However, the environment's remoteness and lack of technical experiences remains a big challenge for the maritime industry. With this, engine designers and makers are continually investigating, specifically optimizing propulsion shafting system design, to meet the environmental and technical challenges of the region. Further, classification societies recognize the need to upgrade the Unified Rules concerning elements to meet current Polar requirements. Hence in this paper, excitation torque calculation on Polar class vessels propulsion shafting system will be reviewed. The propeller - ice interaction load effect, which is a main consideration of excitation source of Polar Class propulsion shafting system, on shaft design calculation will be analyzed.

Estimation of Engine Output for Marine Diesel Engines (선박용 디젤엔진의 출력산정에 관한 연구)

  • To obtain the engine output correctly is basically very important factor for estimating a engine performance. But, it has been reported that the IHP measured from electronic indicator such as MIPS(Mean Indication Pressure System) has a deviation compared to mechanical indicator. It was reported by authors that the uncertainty of crank angle for TDC position could be one of the reasons. In this paper, the uncertainty of crank angle for TDC position and its influence to engine output were investigated respectively about M/E and G/E for marine diesel engines. For the purpose, two sampling methods of pressure in cylinder were considered which were 'angle base sampling' and 'time base sampling'. Angle base sampling is real crank angle acquired from angle encoder which is attached to crank shaft and time base sampling is crank angle calculated by detected revolution with Z-pluse of encoder. Time base sampling is same method of MIPS. This paper concluded that time base sampling method is not suitable for obtaining the output of marine diesel engine on board because of instantaneous speed variation and load fluctuation. Also it is verified that the variation of engine speed by load fluctuation should be one of reasons additionally in case of M/E.

Autonomic Self Healing-Based Load Assessment for Load Division in OKKAM Backbone Cluster

  • Self healing systems are considered as cognation-enabled sub form of fault tolerance system. But our experiments that we report in this paper show that self healing systems can be used for performance optimization, configuration management, access control management and bunch of other functions. The exponential complexity that results from interaction between autonomic systems and users (software and human users) has hindered the deployment and user of intelligent systems for a while now. We show that if that exceptional complexity is converted into self-growing knowledge (policies in our case), can make up for initial development cost of building an intelligent system. In this paper, we report the application of AHSEN (Autonomic Healing-based Self management Engine) to in OKKAM Project infrastructure backbone cluster that mimics the web service based architecture of u-Zone gateway infrastructure. The 'blind' load division on per-request bases is not optimal for distributed and performance hungry infrastructure such as OKKAM. The approach adopted assesses the active threads on the virtual machine and does resource estimates for active processes. The availability of a certain server is represented through worker modules at load server. Our simulation results on the OKKAM infrastructure show that the self healing significantly improves the performance and clearly demarcates the logical ambiguities in contemporary designs of self healing infrastructures proposed for large scale computing infrastructures.

With this, engine designers and makers are continually investigating, specifically optimizing propulsion shafting system design, to meet the environmental and technical challenges of the region. The International Association of Classification Society, specifically machinery requirements for polar class ships(IACS UR13), embodies the propulsion shafting design requirements for ice class vessels. However, the necessity to upgrade the various features of the unified rules in meeting current polar requirements is acknowledged by IACS and other classification societies. For the polar class propulsion shafting system, it is perceived that the main source of excitation will be the propeller - ice load interaction. The milling - and the impact load, in addition to the load cases interpreted by IACS, contribute greatly to the overall characteristic of the system and due considerations are given during the propulsion design stage. This paper will expound on the excitation load estimation factors affecting the dynamic response of the different propulsion shafting system design. It is anticipated that detailed understanding of these factors will have a significant role during propulsion shafting design in the future.

Experimental Research for CO2 Emission Estimation of Medium-Scale Excavator Reflecting Work Characteristics (작업 특성을 반영한 중규모 굴삭기의 CO2 배출량산정을 위한 실험적 연구)

  • Researches on the emissions of greenhouse gases in the construction industry, which accounts for 40% of raw materials, 30% of energy consumption, and 30% of $CO_2$ emissions in the entire industry, are mainly focused on studies of LCA. However, it is assessed that $CO_2$ emissions are higher in construction sequence than in operation sequence. Also, it is considered that construction machinery using fossil fuel is a main factor causing environmental load in construction sequence. Therefore, this study analyzes the workload and engine RPM characteristics of the excavator which is the second largest number of registered construction machinery in Korea and the highest utilization rate in actual construction site. The excavator is divided into non-load states and load states where power is transmitted to the excavator. The exhaust gas is analyzed by a direct measurement method using PEMS equipment. $CO_2$ emissions are estimated by analyzing the relationship between RPM and exhaust emission characteristics according to the actual driving conditions. Additionally, we analyze the difference between $CO_2$ emissions of construction machine calculated by this study and $CO_2$ emissions calculated by using carbon emission coefficient.

A Study on the Life Characteristic of an Automotive Water-pump Bearing Using the Accelerated Test Method (가속시험법을 활용한 자동차용 워터펌프 베어링의 수명특성에 관한 연구)

  • A water-pump located in the cooling area of a car circulates cooling water. A particular bearing element, known as a water-pump bearing, installed in the rotating part carries the entire load. The failure of this water-pump bearing has a direct impact on the failure of the automobile engine, and so securing its reliability is crucial. Several researchers have examined the design principles of the water-pump bearing, but there are no reports on the life characteristic of the bearing yet. Herein, we report the construction of test equipment to reproduce the spalling of the roller contact, which is the main failure mode of the chosen water-pump bearing. We chose the radial load as an accelerated stress factor and validated the failure mode by monitoring the surface defects. We conducted the accelerated life test after determining the accelerated stress level through a combination of finite element analysis and a preliminary test. In the life tests, we used an accelerometer to perform failure diagnosis. In the last stage of this study, we present a statistical reliability analysis. Thus, we fully estimated the shape parameter of the water-pump bearing, accelerating level on the load , and the lifetime (MTTF and B10 life) under real use conditions, and finally proposed an interval estimation value considering the uncertainty of the estimated value.

Some Trends of Marine Engineering and Shipbuilding in Asia (reliability investigation works and their evaluation indices)

  • In Asia countries the productions of ship building and marine engines have been increasing, specially Japanese marine industries have worked hard after 1960s and Korean ones after 1980s. Recently the other countries, as Taiwan and China, have been working so that these hour Asian countries are occuping the high level of shared ratio of productions for gross tonnages and horse powers, which are 74 and 64[%] of the world ones ($8.6\times10$+6[GT], $8.6\times10$+6[PS]) in 1994. Korean industries had the highest shared ratio of production of tanker vessel and 2 stroke diesel engine as 45[%]($2.2\times10$+6[GT]) and 37[%]($1.0\times10$+6[PS]) which were more than those of Japan as 34 and 16[%] in 1989 respectively. Some marine databases and their network links among Asian countries are proposed due to the posibility of collection and analyses with their own specifications by the marine industries and operators as well as Japanese ship reliability investigation works(SRIW) like SRIC in Japan. During 1966 and 1996 16 times of SRIW in Japan have been carried out by ship reliability investigation group(SRIG) in Japan. There have been collected and evaluated a great number of field data of failures and maintenances($700\times10$+3[occ], $1.6\times10$+6[MH}) during running hours($13.4\times10$+6[Hrs]), from which many kinds of evaluation indices could be gotten as the three indices of occurring rate$\lambda$(52.2[occ/1000Hrs]), average man-hour mh(2.29[MH/occ]) and manning index MI(119[MH/1000Hrs]). An estimation example having the three indices$\lambda$, mh and MI were shown by the SRIC 1990 Data Base in Japan for the two kinds of fuel oil suppling subsystems which are dual fuel oil one(DFOS) and mono fuel oil one(MFOS). Three indices MI, and mh for DFOS and MFOS results in 7.16 and 5.20[MH/1000Hrs], 2.63 and 2.06[occ/1000 Hrs]. Therefore the more simple subsystem MFOS can save approximately 30[%] of maintenance load. Finlly an utilization methods are shown for the SRIC in Japan by means of computer system and worlwide internet links.
