This study was conducted to investigate the load acting on a tractor engine when it delivers the maximum power at drawbar. The results of the drawbar tests on the 5 locally-made and 14 imported tractors conducted at NIAE in 2004, and the 15 tractors tested at OECD test stations in foreign countries were analyzed and presented by the torque load ratio, defined as a ratio of the engine torque load caused by drawbar pull to its full-load capacity, as a function of pull speed. The NIAE test results showed that the torque load ratio increased from 20 to 80% with pull speed less than 5 km/h. At speeds faster than 5 km/h, it was 80${\sim}$110% regardless of the pull speed. However, the OECD test results showed that the torque load ratio was evaluated mostly to be 70${\sim}$90% in the entire pull speed range. The same trend was also shown for the maximum drawbar load. The difference in the torque load ratio may be attributable to bias-ply tires for locally-made and some imported tractors. It is also suggested that the input torque load may be increased safely up to 120% of the full load capacity of the tractor engine for an accelerated life test of tractor transmissions.

This paper presents an effective way of improving fuel consumption for a variable displacement engine. The improvement of fuel consumption can be accomplished by means of deactivating inlet and exhaust valves, reducing the number of effective cylinders of a four-cylinder gasoline engine that is mounted on a domestic compact automobile.

To determine the performance characteristics of motorcycle engine using biogas for practical use, the intake system of a 110 cc motorcycle engine is properly modified to operate with biogas as a fuel. Biogas is a potentially renewable fuel for replacing gasoline in future, but it has high percentage of $CO_2$ that could lead to slow the burning rate of biogas-air mixture and cause instability in combustion. Thus, the performance characteristics of biogas-fueled motorcycle engines could be different from those of gasoline motorcycle engines. In this paper, the important parameters of performance characteristics (such as: power output, thermal efficiency, fuel consumption, exhaust emission,${\cdots}$) of biogas-fueled motorcycle engine are studied and estimated with change of engine speed and load. The obtained results when operating with biogas are used to compare with that of gasoline fuel under the same operating conditions. Engine speed in the experimental is changed from 1500 rpm (idle-mode) up to 3500 rpm by a step of 500 rpm. Engine load is changed from zero to maximum load with the help of an exciting voltage device from generator-type dynamometer. The experimental results show that the tested engine operated with richer biogas-air mixture than that of gasoline-air mixture under the same test conditions. Biogas-fueled engine gives a higher fuel consumption and lower thermal efficiency under the same power output. Brake thermal efficiency of biogas engine is found to be about 3% lower than gasoline-fueled motorcycle engine for whole range of speed. Exhaust emission of biogas-fueled motorcycle engine (such as: CO, HC) is found to be lower than the limitation level of the emission standards of Vietnam for motorcycle engines (CO <4.5% HC <1200 ppm).
Depth and working load control is one of the most important technique in control system for tractor rotary implement automation. Keeping the depth consistent is critical to bring along crops and to improve the efficiency and quality of the following operations. Keeping the load of engine consistent is an essential factor for the efficiency of operation and engine protection of tractor. In this study we investigated the possibility of application of depth and working load control system for tractor using a proportional valve through field tests. Depth control was implemented by the ascent and descent of 3 point linkage for the change of setting depth. There were 4 mm and 5.2 mm control deviations for setting depths of 50mm and 100mm, respectively. Load control was operated appropriately by the ascent and of descent of 3 point link for the change of setting working load. The standard deviations between setting load and engine load were 171 rpm at 1.3 km/h and 164 rpm at 2.3 km/h tractor travel velocity. The results of experiment showed that the characteristics of response was sufficient to be used as the implement depth and working load control system for tractor using proportional valve.

This study was attempted to investigate the changes of specific fuel consumption, compression pressure and power output, consequently to obtain basic data on farm kerosene engine. The samples which are used in this study are a 4 cycle water cooled korosene engine for the use of K6-CT83 power tiller and a 4 cycle air-cooled kerosene engine for the use of G5L-3A water pump. The Korean Industrial Standards (K.S)KS-B 6002 "Test code of small internal combustion engine" was referred in carrying out this study, and its results are as follows. 1. According to load increasing, the speific fuel consumption of the engines generally decreases, however, in case of 10% over-loading it increases. 2. As a result of full load consecutive operation, according to passing of operating time, the amount of wear generally increases, consequently the speific fuel consumption also increases, and inversly the compression pressure decreases. 3. The changes of specific fuel consumption and compression pressure were closely related with time of piston ring exchange, and periodically about 100 hours the engines show the increase of specific fuel consumption and the decrease of compression pressure. 4. After about 300 hours, although the engine had new piston rings, the specific fuel consumption increase, consequently the engine needs boring. In actual use, it is impossible to operate consecutively on full load, therefore the boring time of engine is expected to come later.
Natural gas has been considered one of the most promising alternative fuels for transportation because of its abundance as well as its ability to reduce regulated pollutants. We measured emission characteristics of nanoparticles from lean burn H/D(Heavy-Duty) CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) engine equipped with oxidation catalysts. The experiments were carried out to measure the emission and engine performance according to the ESC test cycle. The CO and THC conversion efficiencies on the best catalyst in the ESC test cycle achieved about 91 % and 83 %, respectively. From the measurement by the SMPS, the number of nanoparticles emitted from H/D CNG engine is reduced by about 99 % which is more than that of 2.5 L diesel engine. The particle number concentrations of H/D CNG engine were almost nanoparticles. Nanoparticles smaller than 30 nm emitted from the H/D CNG engine and diesel engine equipped with a CDPF(Catalyzed Diesel Particulate Filter) were quite similar. However, the particles bigger than 30nm from the CNG engine were smaller than the particles from diesel engine equipped with a CDPF. The higher the CNG engine load, the lower the particle number from engine-out, but it increased slightly at full load.
The purpose of this study is to prevent the stick, scuffing, scratch between piston and cylinder, is to contribute the piston design such as piston profile, clearance by calculating reaction force by over-lap of piston skirt, as measuring the temperature distributions of cylinder wall. The experiment has been peformed to obtain data during actual engine operation. Temperature gradient in peripheral and axial distributions of cylinder wall according to torque and speed of engine were measured by use of an 800cc class gasoline engine. The results obtained are summarized as follows ; 1) The temperature of cylinder wall at TDC was about $50{\sim}75^{\circ}C$ higher than temperature of cooling water. 2) The rear side temperature of top dead center was $141^{\circ}C$(1/4 load) in axial distribution, whereas the rear side of midway position temperature was $98^{\circ}C$. 3) The temperature of cylinder wall increased in according to rising temperature of cooling water. 4) The thrust side temperature of cylinder wall was about $15^{\circ}C$ in all load test. 5) The rear side temperature of top dead center was $159^{\circ}C$ (1/2 load) in peripheral distribution, it was about $39^{\circ}C$ higher than thrust side temperature.
The durability of a cylinder head is influenced by the thermal and mechanical history during the manufacturing process, as well as engine operation. In order to improve the durability of cylinder head, both load from engine operation and the preload conditions from the manufacturing process must be considered. The aluminum cylinder head used for a HSDI diesel engine is investigated to reduce the possibility of high cycle fatigue crack in this study. FE analysis is performed to elucidate the mechanism of high cycle fatigue crack in the HSDI diesel cylinder head. Two separate approaches to increase the durability of the cylinder head are discussed: reducing load from engine operation and re-arranging preload conditions from the manufacturing process at the critical location of the cylinder head. Local design changes of the cylinder head and modification of pretension load in the cylinder head bolt were investigated using FE analysis to relieve load at the critical location during engine operation. Residual stress formed at the critical location during the manufacturing process is measured and heat treatment parameters are changed to re-arrange the distribution of residual stress. Results of FE analysis and experiments showed that thorough consideration of the manufacturing process is necessary to enhance the durability of the cylinder head.

In odrder to survey the emission level of air pollutants from diesel vehicles, was measured CO, HC, NOx and smoke of 4 types of domestic-use diesel engines under various conditions. The emission of CO, HC and NOx tested by 6-Mode test method and smoke emission by full load test met the permissible vehicle emission standard. Pollutant emission rates of diesel engines were different according to engine operating conditions, that is, engine load and engine speed. Generally, CO and HC was emitted more at low load and NOx at high load but the trend was quite different by the type of engines. In exhaust gas, $NO_2$ portion of NOx emission was high, specially at low speed and low load. The correlation equation between CLD(NOx) and NDIR(NO) method of nitrogen of nitrogen oxides analysis was y = 1.10x - 3.48 (y: CLD method) as a result of 6-mode test.

This study analyzed the load and the consumed power characteristics of a potato harvesting operation in a dry field. The potato harvesting operation was performed using an underground crop harvester mounted on an agricultural tractor with a rated engine power of 23.7 kW. The rotational speeds and the torque of the engine output shaft, rear axle, and power take-off (PTO) shaft were measured under various working conditions. The load spectrum and the consumed power were analyzed using the measured data. The results show that the consumed power of the rear axle increased as the working speed increased, while that of the PTO shaft decreased. The consumed power of the engine output shaft showed a similar trend with that of the PTO shaft, but the torque deviation was larger in the load spectrum. The results of previous studies were used to compare herein the consumed power and the load characteristics of the harvesting, rotary, and plow operations in a dry field. PTO and tractive power were highly consumed in the plow and rotary operations, respectively. The consumed power of the PTO shaft and the rear axle in the harvesting operation were 29-41% and 18-23% of the engine power, respectively. Compared to those in the rotary and plow operations, the engine power was relatively evenly distributed to the PTO shaft and rear axle in the harvesting operation.
