A truss-braced wing (TBW) aircraft has recently received increasing attention due to higher aerodynamic efficiency compared to conventional cantilever wing aircraft. For conceptual TBW aircraft design, we developed a propulsion-and-airframe integrated design environment by replacing a semi-empirical turbofan engine model with a thermodynamic cycle-based one built upon the numerical propulsion system simulation (NPSS). The constructed NPSS model benefitted TBW aircraft design study, as it could handle engine installation effects influencing engine fuel efficiency. The NPSS model also contributed to broadening TBW aircraft design space, for it provided turbofan engine design variables involving a technology factor reflecting progress in propulsion technology. To effectively consolidate the NPSS propulsion model with the TBW airframe model, we devised a rapid, approximate substitute of the NPSS model by reduced-order modeling (ROM) to resolve difficulties in model integration. In addition, we formed an artificial neural network (ANN) that associates engine component attributes evaluated by object-oriented weight analysis of turbine engine (WATE++) with engine design variables to determine engine weight and size, both of which bring together the propulsion and airframe system models. Through propulsion-andairframe design space exploration, we optimized TBW aircraft design for fuel saving and revealed that a simple engine model neglecting engine installation effects may overestimate TBW aircraft performance.

This paper describes a requirement analysis for automotive engine design using a computer aided systems engineering tool RDD-100. Because the engine is a complex system with many subsystems, there are many needs of stakeholder throughout the life-cycle of the engine. The originating requirements have been derived from the needs and decomposed into leaf-node requirements with the tool. Many requirement errors have been detected during the decomposition process and resolved by modifying the requirements. Inconsistency problems have been also resolved with the tool, Analysis of engine requirements using RDD-100 brings clarity to engine design early in the development process.
The recent results of the engine development performed in this you on Turbogreen 1200, the first industrial gas turbine engine developed in Korea, are presented. In order to improve the engine performance and structural stability from the first prototype engine, several variants of the engine and major components such as combustor and rotor assembly have been developed and tested. This paper shows these results especially focused on the engine test and performance analysis, in which test system, instrumentation and data processing are discussed as well. The engine performance and its trend give relatively good coincidence with the design ones. At design power of 1.2MW, the thermal efficiency of the engine is estimated over $25\%$ which is below the design target of $27.2\%$. This gap of efficiency is caused mainly by large tip clearance between turbine blades and casing. Considering high design efficiency superior to those of other competitive engines in this power class, Turbogreen 1200 would have a strong competition in its performance if the design efficiency is achieved by further developments such as tip clearance control, which are very possible and natural in final mass production of the developed gas turbine engine.
In this paper, an integrated system for dynamic analysis and optimal design of engine mount systems is presented. The system can simulate static and dynamic behaviors of engine mount systems and optimize design parameters such as mount stiffness, mounting locations with desired design targets of frequency or displacement. A FF-engine with an automatic transmission is used to demonstrate the analysis and optimal design capabilities of the proposed design system.
In this study, the objective is determine the optimal design variable of engine mount system using the rubber mount of bush-type which is usually utilized in passive control to minimize vibrations of vehicle body or transmission from engine into body. The engine model adopted in this study is 4-cylinder, 4-stroke gasoline engine support- ed by 4-points. The system is modelled in 10 d.o.f.-rigid body motion of the engine & transmission in 6 d.o.f., elastic motion of vehicle body in 4 d.o.f.(1st torsional, 1st vertical and 1st & 2nd lateral bending vibration mode). To consider the elastic motion of vehicle body, find the eigenvalues and mode shapes of vehicle body by nodal testing and then determine the modal masses and stiffnesses of the body. The design variables of the engine mount system are locations, stiffness and damping coefficients of the rubber mounts(28 design variables). In case of considering the torque-roll axis for the engine, the design variables of the mount system are reduced to 22 design variables. The objective functions in optimal design process are considered by three cases, that is, 1) transmitted forces through engine mounts, 2) acceleration components of generalized coordinates for the vibration of vehicle body, 3) acceleration of specified location(where gear box) of body. three case are analyzed and compared with each other.
In this paper, the minimum oil film thickness and the maximum oil film pressure of engine bearings have been analyzed by using the elastohydrodynamic theory and Taguchi's design method as functions of the oil groove width, oil hole diameter, oil hole position, and oil supply pressure. The optimized design of the engine bearing f3r an automotive Diesel engine is very important for supporting a load-carrying capacity due to gas pres-sures from the engine combustion chamber and inertia forces of the piston. The optimized design data of engine bearings indicated that the optimized oil groove width and an oil diameter of a engine bearing are 8mm at the speed of 2,000 rpm for a given 4-cylinder Diesel engine. Thus, the oil groove oil groove and an oil hole for high performances of an engine bearing may be considered as major design parameters compared to other design factors, which are strongly related to the minimum oil film thickness and the maximum oil pressure distribution of the engine oil.
Highly accurate control of an air-fuel ratio is very important to reduce exhaust gas emissions of gaseous-fuel engines. In order to achieve this purpose, a precise engine model is required to estimate engine performance from the engine design process which is applied to the design of an engine controller. Engine dynamics are considered to develop a dynamic engine model of a gaseous-fuel engine. An effective air mass ratio is proposed to study variations of the engine dynamics according to the water vapor and the gaseous-fuel in the mixture. The dynamic engine model is validated with the LPG engine under steady and transient operating conditions. The experimental results in the LPG gaseous-fuel engine show that the estimation of the air flow and the air-fuel ratio based upon the effective air mass ratio is more accurate than that of a normal engine model.
The major effective factors on the ride quality of a vehicle are the vibration and noise of the engine and drive system. Engine contributes about 80% of the vibration and noise in the vehicle, and exciting forces of the engine are transmitted onto the vehicle frame through the engine mount. This paper studies the vibration reduction of a vehicle through the improvement of the engine mount. A computer program for optimal design is developed and the engine mount conditions are optimized to reduce the WRMS of PSD of acceleration at the driver's seat, which are caused by the exciting forces at the idle speed. Design variables are selected as the stiffness, mount angle and the location of the engine mount rubber. It is shown through computer simulation that the PSD of acceleration at the driver's seat can be improved by redesigning the engine mount system.
