  • DC/DC Switching power converters are commonly used to generate regulated DC output voltages with high-power efficiencies from different DC input sources. A switching converter utilizes one or more energy storage elements such as capacitors, or transformers to efficiently transfer energy from the input to the output at periodic intervals. The fundamental boost converter studied here consists of a power metal-oxide semiconductor field effect transistor switch, an inductor, a capacitor, a diode, and a pulse-width modulation circuit with oscillator, amplifier, and comparator. A buck converter containing a switched-mode power supply is also studied. In this paper, the electrical characteristics of DC/DC power converters are simulated by simulation program with integrated circuit emphasis (SPICE). Furthermore, power efficiency was analyzed based on the specifications of each component.

  • Three-dimensional compressible turbulent flow fields within the passage of a diffusing S-duct have been simulated by solving the Navier-Stokes equations with SIMPLE scheme. The average inlet Mach number is 0.6 and the Reynolds number based on the inlet diameter is $1.76{\times}10^6$ The extended $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is applied to modeling the Reynolds stresses. Computed results of the flow in a circular diffusing S-duct provide an understanding of the flow structure within a typical engine inlet system. These are compared with experimental wall static-pressure, total-pressure fields, and secondary velocity profiles. Additionally, boundary layer thickness, skin friction values, and streamlines in the symmetric plane are presented. The computed results depict the interaction between the low energy flow by the flow separation and the high energy flow by the reversed duct curvature. The computed results obtained using the extended $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model.

  • Silicon Charge Detector is to measure the charge of incident cosmic-ray nuclei with a resolution of 0.2 charge unit for atomic number, Z=1-30 with energy range from 1 to 1000 TeV. It is one of detectors for CREAM (Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass) experiment to test current models of source and acceleration mechanisms of ultra high energy cosmic rays. It's first flight will be with a NASA zero pressure balloon planned to be launched from McMurdo Station, Antarctica in December 2004. (omitted)

  • The effects of cancellation errors on the convergence characteristics of preconditioned Euler equations at low Mach numbers are analyzed. Flows in a two-dimensional channel with a circular bump are calculated at different Mach numbers. It is shown that the cancellation error in the energy equation grows faster than those in the other equations as the Mach number decreases. It is also shown that the cancellation problem of the energy equation can be alleviated by multiplying the inversion of the preconditioner.

  • The structures of 17GHz microwave burst for bipolar sunspots have investigated. which included the effects of the projected shapes of radio sources as they traverse across the solar disk using a magnetic loop employing a model of solenoid coils. An ensemble of high-energy electrons confined in the loop be assumed. The projected brightnesls distributions of gyrosynchrotron emission in x- and o-modes are computed and converted into total intensity and circular polarization difference at 17GHz for various heliocentric distances using numerical integration of the transfer equation along the line of sight. The results of computations at 17GHz for optical thin case will be presented. and the effects of the orientation of the loop will be discussed in detail, as well as the effect of size, position, Structure, and polarization of the emission. Also the results of the various physical P8lrameters such as the strength of magnetic field. high and low energy cut-off of accelerated electrons. spectral index and density of electrons will be preslmted. After comparing the results of model calculation with observations. we found that the observations can be well explained in terms of a loop model and its projection effect.effect.

  • An interfacial penny-shaped crack between piezoelectric layer and elastic half-space subjected to mechanical and electric loads is investigated. Using Hankel transform technique, the mixed boundary value problem is reduced to a system of singular integral equations. The integral equations are further reduced to a system of algebraic equations with the aid of Jacobi polynomials. The stress intensity factor and energy release rate are determined. Numerical results reveal the effects of electric loadings and material parameters of composite on crack propagation and growth. The results seem useful for design of the piezoelectric composite structures and devices of high performance.

  • [Purpose] Recently, skyscrapers have sharply increased throughout the world, including South Korea. Although a skyscraper has its own merit such as the landmark of a city, it also has various problems like massive energy consumption. This study is aimed to establish the concept of environment-friendly skyscraper and propose a plan to realize skyscraper after analyzing the architectural, facility and environmental friendly elements of skyscrapers. [Method] This study lists up skyscrapers over 40 floors and 200 meters high. Upon 10 constructed buildings, it analyzes their basic plans and the green building technologies applied to them and suggests effective and environment-friendly architectural plan. [Result] This study examined the distinctions of the layout, shape, facade, and floor plan plane of 10 skyscrapers and found out specific techniques to be used for the use plan of natural energy, plan for saving resources and reducing wastes and a plan for environmental architecture and system.

  • Resonance fluorescence is the manifestation of the interaction between the physical system under consideration and the vacuum-field fluctuation. The fluorescence spectrum provides such physical informations as the energy-level structure of the system, instabilities and relative populations of the energy levels, etc.. One of the typical fluorescence spectra is the Mollow triplet appearing when two-level atoms are driven by a strong coherent field in free space$^{(1)}$ . In the weak field limit, the singlet instead of the triplet is obtained with a reduced linewidth due to the squeezing of one quadrature phase of the induced atomic dipole$^{(2)}$ . On the other hand, when the atoms are put inside a cavity rather than in free space, a doublet spectrum due to the vacuum Rabi-splitting is achieved, showing clearly the coupling of atoms and the cavity in the single-quantum limit$^{(3)}$ . • The interests on GaAs solar cell grown on Ge substrates as an alternative of GaAs substrate arises from its very close lattice parameters, very small difference in thermal expansion coefficients, and much higher fracture toughness between GaAs and Ge. In addition, for many space power application, it would be a most attractive solar cell with high radiation resistance of GaAs and high reliability for the reverse current damage of Ge, and expecting the theoretical efficiency limit of the tandem GaAs/Ge solar cell is 34% under 1 Sun, AM 0, and 28$^{\circ}C$ condition. In this report, we have reviewed the performance and the manufacturing technics of GaAs/Ge solar cell, and current status of research in GaAs/Ge solar cell.
