  • The normal shutdown and maintenance period of a nuclear power plant can be remarkably shortened when the examination and maintenance works in steam generator tubes are simultaneously carried out with refueling job. There are nozzle dams to Hock the coolant How from reactor to steam generator. Workers are reluctant to install nozzle dam because of the high radiation exposure and the limited working space in steam generator. Moreover, the heavy weight of present nozzle dam makes it installation and removal works much difficult. In this paper, a lighter KAERI nozzle dam with increased flexural rigidity-to-weight was designed and manufactured by changing the structure design of the present nozzle dam and by selecting new material, carbon fiber-reinforced plastic.

  • New concept of wind energy conversion system is proposed to increase the energy density at a given working space. The quality of wind for wind power generation is depend on its direction and speed. However, the quality is not good on land because wind direction is changeable all the time and the speed as well. The most popularly operated wind turbine system is an axial-flow free turbine. But its conversion efficiency is less than 30% and even less than 20% considering the operating time. In this research, a cross-flow type wind turbine system is proposed with a convergent-divergent duct system to accelerate the low speed wind at the inlet of the wind turbine. Inlet guide vane is also introduced to the wind turbine system to have continuous power generation under the change of wind direction. In here, the availability of wind energy generation is evaluated with the change of the size of the inlet guide vane and the optimum geometry of the turbine impeller blade was found for the innovative wind power generation system.

  • The reaction of steam reforming of methane with commercial catalysts was conducted for thermochemical heat storage. The reaction conditions were investigated for temperature range of 700 to $900\;^{\circ}C$ and steam to carbon mole ratios between 3.0 and 5.0. The reactor was made of stainless steel and it's dimension was 12 cm inside diameter and 6cm long. The effects of space velocity and reactants mole ratio and temperature on the methane conversion and CO selectivity were examined. Optimum reaction condition was determined. There was not a significant difference of methane conversion and CO selectivity compared to conventional reactor.

  • The present work focuses multi-objective optimization of blade sweep for a Wells turbine. The blade-sweep parameters at the mid and the tip sections are selected as design variables. The peak-torque coefficient and the corresponding efficiency are the objective functions, which are maximized. The numerical analysis has been carried out by solving 3D RANS equations based on k-w SST turbulence model. Nine design points are selected within a design space and the simulations are run. Based on the computational results, surrogate-based weighted average models are constructed and the population based multi-objective evolutionary algorithm gave Pareto optimal solutions. The peak-torque coefficient and the corresponding efficiency are enhanced, and the results are analysed using CFD simulations. Two extreme designs in the Pareto solutions show that the peak-torque-coefficient is increased by 28.28% and the corresponding efficiency is decreased by 13.5%. A detailed flow analysis shows the separation phenomena change the turbine performance.

  • Steam reforming of methane using Xe-arc solar simulator was studied for the application of concentrated solar energy into chemical reaction. The reactor, a volumetric absorber, consisted of a porous ceramic foam disk coated with commercial reforming catalyst. Operating temperature was in the range of $450\;-\;550^{\circ}C$ and the excess steam ratio to methane was from 3.0 to 5.0. At the steady-state condition, the conversion of methane Increased with temperature in the range of 15 % - 30 % and the experimentally determined conversion was found to be close to theoretical equilibrium conversion. It was also found that the CO selectivity slightly decreased with excess steam ratio. Finally, the conversion of methane decreased significantly with space velocity of reactants.

  • Potential energy surfaces for the reaction Al + $O_2{\to}$AlO + O have been calculated with the multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) method using molecular orbitals derived from the complete active space selfconsistent field (CASSCF) calculations. The end-on geometry is the most favourable for the reaction to take place. The small reaction barrier in the present calculation (0.11 eV) is probably an artefact related to the ionicneutral avoided crossing. The charge analysis implies that the title oxidation reaction occurs through a harpooning mechanism. Along the potential energy surface of the reaction, there are two stable intermediates of $AlO_2(C_{{\infty}v}$ and $C_{2v}$) at least 2.74 eV below the energy of reactants. The calculated enthalpy of the reaction (-0.07 eV) is in excellent agreement with the experimental value (-0.155 eV) in part due to the fortuitous cancellation of errors in AlO and $O_2$ calculations.

  • kDomestic studies on meteorologicaldata have been carried out, however they were mostly not constant but limited to fragment compilation. The studies on solar energy, among others, have been relatively active but the measurement of solar irradiance is also limited to some extent. This study, in an effort to identify the difference in data between solar radiance and cloud cover, was intended to compare and analyze the typical meteorological data developed by Korean Solar Energy Society with the solar irradiance calculated using the typical meteorological data and cloud cover data provided by current simulation program. Monthly average solar irradiance from the meteorological data (ISO TRY) of Korea's typical meteorological data which was actuallymeasured appeared to be far below the monthly solar irradiance from the American Department of Energy. The solar irradiance calculated based on cloud cover indicates very limited difference between the two data, so the solar irradiance measured by Korean typical metrologicaldata (ISO TRY) indicated the similar value, which demonstrates the solar irradiance data from Korean Meteorological Administration is more accurate than those US National Weather Center.

  • Steam reforming of n-hexadecane, a major component of diesel over Ni-based hydrotalcite-like catalyst was carried out at $900^{\circ}C$ at atmospheric pressure with space velocity of $10,000h^{-1}$ and feed molar ratio of steam/carbon=3.0. Ni-based hydrotalcite catalyst was prepared by a solid phase crystallization (spc) method and characterized by $N_2$-physisorption, CO chemisorption, TPR., XRD, and TEM techniques. It was found that spc Ni/MgAl catalyst showed higher catalytic stability and inhibition of carbon formation than Ni/$\gamma-Al_2O_3$ catalyst under the tested conditions. The results suggest that the modified spc-Ni/MgAl catalyst after optimization may be applied for the SR reaction of diesel.

  • In this paper, a unified control strategy using the current space vector modulation (CSVM) technique is proposed and applied to a bidirectional three-phase DC/AC converter. The operation of the converter changes with the direction of the power flow. In the charging mode, it works as a buck type rectifier; and during the discharging mode, it operates as a boost type inverter, which makes it suitable as an interface between high voltage AC grids and low voltage energy storage devices. This topology has the following advantages: high conversion efficiency, high power factor at the grid side, tight control of the charging current and fast transition between the charging and discharging modes. The operating principle of the mode analysis, the gate signal generation, the general control strategy and the transition from a constant current (CC) to a constant voltage (CV) in the charging mode are discussed. The proposed control strategy has been validated by simulations and experimental results obtained with a 1kW laboratory prototype using supercapacitors as an energy storage device.

  • We present a retrieval scheme for the remote sensing of evapotranspiration (ET) over rice paddy. To perform the retrieval, high-resolution airborne imagery of multi-spectral visible and thermal infrared data, and ground-based meteorological measurements are utilized. Our ET retrieval scheme is based on the basic principal of surface energy budget, which is a result of balance in longwave and shortwave radiation, latent heat, sensible heat, and energy flux into the ground. To partition the latent and sensible heat fluxes of interest from the energy balance equation, three basic parameters are of most concern, including albedo, surface temperature, and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The NDVI and albedo can be easily derived from the visible and near infrared spectral data, while the surface tem-perature can be determined through the analysis of the infrared data with the Stefan Boltzmann law. From the airborne imagery taken on 28 April 2003, we observe very good dry and wet pixels that can be easily corre-sponded to the radiation and evaporation controlled crite-ria, respectively, and, hence, for the further use in defin-ing the evaporative fraction needed to partition sensible and latent heat fluxes from the net energy flux. The de-rived ET is compared with the in situ measurements.
