  • Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers are the most widely used precursor of the materials for carbon fibers. The conventional process of carbon fibers from PAN precursor fiber includes two step; stabilization at low temperature and carbonization at high temperature. Compared to thermal stabilization, the stabilization process by electron beam (E-beam) irradiation is a advanced and brief method. However, a stabilization by E-beam irradiation was required a high dose (over 5,000 kGy) and spend over 1.5 hr (1.14 MeV, 1 mA). In the present work the main goal is exploring a quick stabilization process by cotrolling E-beam currents. The effect of various E-beam currents on stabilization of PAN precursor fiber was studied by gel fraction test, thermo gravimertic analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), tensile strength, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images.

  • A scanning stereo-PIV system was developed to measure the three-dimensional distribution of three-component velocity in a turbulent round jet. A laser light beam produced by a high repetition rate YLF pulse laser was expanded vertically by a cylindrical lens to form a laser light sheet. The light sheet is scanned in a direction normal to the sheet by a flat mirror mounted on an optical scanner, which is controlled by a programmable scanner controller. Two high-speed mega-pixel resolution C-MOS cameras captured the particle images illuminated by the light sheet, and stereoscopic PIV method was adopted to acquire the 3D-3C-velocity distribution of turbulent round jet in an octagonal tank filled with water. The jet Reynolds number was set at Re=1000 and the streamwise location of the measurement was fixed at approximately x = 40D. Time evolution of three-dimensional vortical structure, which is identified by vorticity, is visualized. It revealed that the existence of a group of hairpin-like vortex structures was quite evident around the rim of the shear layer of the jet. Turbulence statistics shows good agreement with the previous data, and divergence of a filtered (unfiltered) velocity vector field was $7\%\;(22\%)$ of root-me an-squared vorticity value.

  • The kinetic analysis of energetic materials using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) is proposed. Friedman Isoconversional method is applied to DSC experiment data and AKTS software is used for analysis. The frequency factor and activation energy are extracted as a function of product mass fraction. The extracted kinetic scheme does not assume multiple chemical steps to describe the response of energetic materials; instead, multiple set of Arrhenius factors are used in describing a single global step. The proposed kinetic scheme has considerable advantage over the standard method based on One-Dimenaionl Time to Explosion (ODTX). Reaction rate and product mass fraction simulation are conducted to validate extracted kinetic scheme. Also a slow cook-off simulation is implemented for validating the applicability of the extracted kinetics scheme to a practical thermal experiment.

  • Thermal analysis of three energetic materials used in pyroelectric device was performed using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The theoretical method for extracting the reaction rate equation of energetic materials using DSC experimental data is proposed and the reaction rate extraction is performed. The results of the DSC were analyzed by the conversion method such as Friedman. Activation energy and frequency factor according to mass fraction were extracted to complete the reaction rate equation. The extracted reaction rate equation has a form that represents the entire chemical reaction process, not the assumption that the chemical reaction process of the high energy material is a main step in several stages. It has considerable advantages in terms of theoretical and accuracy as compared with the chemical reaction rate form extracted through conventional thermal analysis experiments. Using the derived reaction rate equation, we predicted the performance change of three energetic materials operating on actual storage condition over 20 years.

  • The tomographic gamma scanner (TGS) method, a further of extension of segmented gamma scanner (SGS), is most accurate and precise for assaying heterogeneous drummed nuclear radioactive waste; it is widely used in nuclear power plants and radioactive waste storages and disposal sites. The transmission and emission images are reconstructed by image reconstruction techniques. In the paper, the principle of TGS is introduced; image reconstruction techniques are discussed as well; finally, it is demonstrated that TGS method performance.

  • Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) incorporated polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanofibers were synthesized using electronspinning method. Effects of polymer concentration and applied voltage on the synthesis of PAN and PMMA nanofibers were systematically investigated. The structural characterization of PAN/MWCNTs and PMMA/MWCNTs composited nanofibers synthesized as a function of the MWCNTs concentration was performed by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. 5 wt% MWCNTs incorporated PAN and PMMA electrospun nanofiber exhibit best strength and stiffness.

  • The planning accuracy of charged particle therapy (CPT) is subject to the accuracy of stopping power (SP) estimation. In this study, we propose a method of deriving a pseudo-triple-energy CT (pTECT) that can be achievable in the existing dual-energy CT (DECT) systems for better SP estimation. In order to remove the direct effect of errors in CT values, relative CT values according to three scanning voltage settings were used. CT values of each tissue substitute phantom were measured to show the non-linearity of the values thereby suggesting the absolute difference and ratio of CT values as parameters for SP estimation. Electron density, effective atomic number (EAN), mean excitation energy and SP were calculated based on these parameters. Two of conventional methods were implemented and compared to the proposed pTECT method in terms of residuals, absolute error and root-mean-square-error (RMSE). The proposed method outperformed the comparison methods in every evaluation metrics. Especially, the estimation error for EAN and mean excitation using pTECT were converging to zero. In this proof-of-concept study, we showed the feasibility of using three CT values for accurate SP estimation. Our suggested pTECT method indicates potential clinical utility of spectral CT imaging for CPT planning.

  • The hydrogenation behavior of Ti-Ni powders prepared by mechanical alloying in a high energy ball mill have been investigated by P-C isotherm curves, DSC(differential scanning calorimetry), X-ray diffractometer, SEM(scanning electron microscope). Amorphous TiNi phase was formed after 10 milling hours. The hydrogen storage capacity gradually decreased as a function of mechanical alloying time. There appears the DSC endothermic peak due to hydrogen evolution of amorphous hydride phase.

  • n-octadecnae based shape stabilized phase change material (SSPCM) was prepared by using vacuum impregnation method. And an exfoliated graphite nanoplate (xGnP) which has high thermal conductivity properties is used as a PCM container. And then we made heat storage concretes which contains SSPCM for reducing heating and cooling load in buildings. In the prepararion process, the SSPCM was mixed to a concrete as 10, 20 and 30wt% of cement weight. The thermal properties and chemical properties of heat storage concrete were analyzed from Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transformation infrared spectrophotometer (FT-IR), Deferential scanning calorimeter (DSC), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and TCi thermal conductivity analyzer. And we conducted surface temperature analysis of SSPCM and xGnP by using heat plate and insulation mold.
