  • Heat regenerator occupied by regenerative materials improves thermal efficiency of regenerative combustion system through the recovery of sensible heat of exhaust gases. By using one-dimensional two-phase fluid dynamics model, the unsteady thermal flow of regenerators with spherical particles were numerically analyzed to evaluate performance of ratio of waste heat recovery and temperature efficiency and to suggest optimized conditions of heat regenerator. It is predicted that exhaust gases temperature at regenerator outlet of 3.5$\times$10$^{6}$ kcal/hr heat regenerator is even lower than design condition and ratio of waste heat recovery is 75.8%.

  • In recent large-scale semiconductor manufacturing clean rooms, the energy consumption of outdoor air conditioning systems to heat, humidify, cool and dehumidify incoming outdoor air represents about 45% of the total air conditioning load required to maintain a clean room environment. Therefore, the energy performance evaluation and analysis of outdoor air conditioning systems is useful for reducing the outdoor air conditioning load for a clean room. In the present study, an experiment was conducted to compare the energy consumption of outdoor air conditioning systems with a simple air washer, an exhaust air heat recovery type air washer and a DCC return water heat recovery type air washer. It was shown from the present lab-scale experiment with an outdoor air flow of 1,000 $m^3/h$ that the exhaust air heat recovery type and DCC return water heat recovery type air washer outdoor air conditioning systems were more energy-efficient for the summer and winter operations than the simple air washer outdoor air conditioning system and furthermore, the DCC return water heat recovery type one was the most energy-efficient in the winter operation.

  • The performance characteristics of heating and cooling operation for a heat pump system using seawater heat source and exhaust energy are presented. The heat pump system is made of a waste heat recovery system and a vapor compression refrigeration system. The working fluid is R-22. The heat pump system COPs are measured during heating and cooling operation modes, and the resultant COPs were 9.7 and 7.9, respectively, which are three times higher than those of the heat pump itself. Therefore, the performance of the heat pump system using exhaust energy is excellent compared to that of a general heat pump. The experimental data can be effectively used for the design of the high efficient heat pump using a seawater heat source.

  • The time-optimal control for boost converters can achieve the minimum recovery time. However, their output voltage deviation is quite large. Since the minimum output voltage deviation and minimum recovery time cannot be obtained at the same time, a novel energy control is proposed to achieve a superior tradeoff between them in this paper. The peak value of the inductor current can be decreased as well. Its control parameter is easy to choose. When compared with the conventional control methods, the proposed control shows a better dynamic performance. Experimental results, which are in agreement with the theoretical analysis, are provided to verify the proposed control method.

  • To develop a stable and compact small-sized superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) system, which provides electric power with high quality to sensitive electric loads, we fabricated a SMES coil and tested it. Because such a large-sized superconducting coil quenches far away from its critical current, the recovery current is frequently used as a stability criterion in the coil fabrication. Therefore, we first investigated the recovery current characteristics of the large current conductor, which was used in our SMES coil fabrication. The test results indicate that the recovery currents measured in the conductor are nearly identical to those based on the single wire. This implies that the recovery current is affected by the conductor's cooling condition rather than its size and current capacity. In the SMES coil test the first quench occurred at 1250 A, which is equivalent to the stored energy of about 2 MJ. It corresponds to the quench current density of about $130A/mm^2$ This value is much higher in comparison with that reported in the other work. In addition, the first quench current of the coil agrees well with the measured recovery current of the conductor having similar cooling condition with it. This means that to determine the recovery current of a conductor is, first of all, important in the design and fabrication of a large-sized superconducting coil.

  • Exhaust heat recovery ventilation systems conserve energy through enthalpy recovery between air intake and exhaust, and they are being increasingly used. An exhaust heat recovery ventilation system can be installed in the ceiling of a balcony or emergency evacuation space. However, in the case of fire, the emergency evacuation space has to by law remain as empty space, and therefore, a ventilation system can't be installed in an emergency evacuation space. Therefore, the need for a proper installation space for a ventilation system is emphasized. In this study, to install a heat recovery ventilation system in a lightweight wall, a heat exchanger was assembled of thickness below 140 mm. The efficiency of heat recovery was analyzed through performance experiment, in the case of the cooling and heating mode. The heat recovery efficiency increases when the surface area is increased, by using closer channel spacing in the heat exchanger, or by increasing the size of the heat exchanger.
