The majority of existing WECs (wave energy converters) are designed to achieve maximum power at a resonance condition. In the case of a single WEC, its size must be large enough for tuning, and it has high efficiency only within a limited frequency band. Recently, wave power extraction by deploying many small buoys in a compact array has been studied under the assumption that the buoy's size and separation distance are much smaller than the water depth, wave length, and size of the array. A boundary value problem involving the macro-scale boundary condition on the mean surface covered by an infinite strip of buoys is solved using the eigenfunction expansion method. The energy extraction efficiency (${\varepsilon}=1-R^2_f-T^2_r$), where $R_f$ and $T_r$ are the reflection and transmission coefficients for a strip array of buoys, is assessed for various combinations of packing ratio, strip width, and PTO damping coefficient.
In recent decades, exergy analysis has been holding spotlight as a useful tool in the design, assessment, optimization, and improvement of energy system. This paper presents the results of the energy and exergy analysis of a steam turbine cogeneration system for industrial complex using two efficiency concepts of conventional one and exergetic one. In order to obtain the destroyed exergy of each component, mathematical analysis is conducted by using exergy balance and the second law of thermodynamics, according as the parameters are changed, such as the ratio of returned process steam, process steam supplied, temperature and pressure of boiler and power. The computer program developed in this study can determine the efficiencies and exergy destroyed at each component of cogeneration system. As a result of this study, a component having the largest destroyed exergy was boiler. And closed and opened feedwater heater had the lowest one. The affects to the cogeneration system due to the variation of process steam flow and return rate of condensed water is shown that the total electric power efficiency(${\eta}_E$) is decreased as increasing the return rate of condensed water under constant process steam flow. As the boiler pressure is increased for the more production of electricity, the efficiency of cogeneration system was decreased.
The crysralline silicon solar cell where the solar cell market grows rapidly is occupying of about 85% or more high efficiency and low cost endeavors many crystalline solar cells. The fabricaion process of high efficiency crystalline silicon solar cells necessitate complicated fabrication processes and Ti/Pd/AG contact, This metal contacts have only been used in limited areas in spite of their good srability and low contact resistance because of expensive materials and process. Commercial solar cells with screen-printed solar cells formed by using Ag paste suffer from loe fill factor and high contact resistance and low aspect ratio. Ni and Cu metal contacts have been formed by using electroless plating and light-induced electro plating techniques to replace the Ti/Pd/Ag and screen-printed Ag contacts. Copper and Silver can be plated by electro & light-induced plating method. Light-induced plating makes use the photovoltaic effect of solar cell to deposit the metal on the front contact. The cell is immersed into the electrolytic plating bath and irradiated at the front side by light source, which leads to a current density in the front side grid. Electroless plated Ni/ Electro&light-induced plated Cu/ Light-induced plated Ag contact solar cells result in an energy conversion efficiency of 16.446 % on 0.2~0.6${\Omega}$ cm, $20{\times}20mm^2$, CZ(Czochralski) wafer.

In future wireless network, user experience and energy efficiency will play more and more important roles in the communication systems compared to their roles at present. Quality of experience (QoE) and Energy Efficiency (EE) become the widely used metrics. In this paper, we study a combinatorial problem of QoE and EE and investigate a fair power allocation in heterogeneous networks. We first design a new metric, QoE-aware EE (QEE) to reflect the relationship of QoE and energy. Then, the concept of Utopia QEE is introduced, which is defined as the achievable maximum QEE in ideal conditions, for each user. Finally, we transform the power allocation process to an optimization of ratio of QEE and Utopia QEE and use invasive weed optimization (IWO) algorithm to solve the optimization problem. Numerical simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm can get converged and efficiently improve the system energy efficiency and the QoE for each user.
An experimental study was conducted to investigate the performance of a concentrating photovoltaic cell (CPV) against temperature. It is know that a high efficiency of a CPV can be achieved only with proper cell temperature as well as high concentration ratio (CR). This study is concerned with appropriate cooling condition for a liquid-convection cooler for the best performance of a specific CPV. A series of experiments was conducted in a range of cell temperatures as a result of varying cooling conditions, while the concentration ratio was 390 and the solar irradiation flux was higher than 900 $W/m^2$ in outdoor environment. The CPV had a planar dimension of 10 by 10 mm. A Fresnel lens was used as a concentrator, of which the dimension was 221 mm(W) ${\times}$ 221 mm(L) ${\times}$ 3 mm(t) and the transmissivity was known to be 0.8. The cooler was attached to the bottom side of the CPV and had a contact area of 21 mm(W) ${\times}$ 26 mm(L), which was identical to the size of the base plate of the CPV. The coolant temperature was controlled by an isothermal bath and the flow rate was controlled and measured by a flowmeter. The experimental results showed that the average of power efficiency of the CPV decreased from 28.6 % to 24.7 % as the cell temperature increased from $36^{\circ}C$ to $97^{\circ}C$. An appropriate cooling method of a CPV might increase the power conversion efficiency by about 4% for the same concentration ratio. Discussion is included from the viewpoint of the combined efficiency in addition to the power efficiency.

This paper illustrates the analysis and design of a multi-resonant converter applied to an electric vehicle (EV) charger. Thanks to the notch resonant characteristic, the multi-resonant converter achieve soft switching and operate with a narrowed switching frequency range even with a wide output voltage range. These advantages make it suitable for battery charging applications. With two more resonant elements, the design of the chosen converter is more complex than the conventional LLC resonant converter. However, there is not a distinct design outline for the multi-resonant converters in existing articles. According to the analysis in this paper, the normalized notch frequency $f_{r2n}$ and the second series resonant frequency $f_{r3n}$ are more sensitive to the notch capacitor ratio q than the notch inductor ratio k. Then resonant capacitors should be well-designed before the other resonant elements. The peak gain of the converter depends mainly on the magnetizing inductor ratio $L_n$ and the normalized load Q. And it requires a smaller $L_n$ and Q to provide a sufficient voltage gain $M_{max}$ at ($V_{o\_max}$, $P_{o\_max}$). However, the primary current increases with $(L_nQ)^{-1}$, and results in a low efficiency. Then a detailed design procedure for the multi-resonant converter has been provided. A 3.3kW prototype with an output voltage range of 50V to 500V dc and a peak efficiency of 97.3 % is built to verify the design and effectiveness of the converter.
Dimethyl ether (DME) is an attractive fuel as a hydrogen carrier for mobile PEMFC applications. However, its reforming technologies are rarely studied especially by using autothermal reforming (ATR) method. This work explored the impact of operating conditions to the performance of DME ATR. Temperature, Steam to carbon ratio(SCR), Oxygen to carbon ratio(OCR) and Gas hourly space velocity(GHSV) were considered as the operating conditions. As results, conversion efficiency was increased as the temperature increased, but saturated around $700^{\circ}C$. There was no significant effect of SCR on conversion efficiency, but high SCR led reactions in endothermic manner. High OCR substantially suppressed conversion efficiency, but it helped to sustain the temperature by stimulating exothermic reactions. Conversion efficiency was decreased as GHSV increased. The optimized operating conditions was suggested: $700^{\circ}C$, SCR of 1.5, OCR of 0.45 and GHSV below 15000/h and conversion efficiency was ~85% at the conditions.

Suction valve fluttering is generated by reciprocating motions of the piston inhaling and discharging process of gas in the hermetic compressor. A reactive type suction muffler, which produces high pressure-drop because of its complicated flow path, controls the impulsive noise radiated from the flutter of suction valve. The high-pressure drop in the muffler increases the transmission loss, but reduces the EER(Energy Efficiency Ratio) of the compressor. We consider how to design the high acoustic attenuation and low pressure-drop performance to take account of the acoustic and flow performances of the suction muffler. In this study, we identified the suction noise source of compressor from the measurement of the acoustic pulsation and flutter of suction valve. We analyzed the acoustic characteristics of muffler using the finite element method, and compared the experimental and analytical characteristics of flow path of suction muffler. Theoretical predictions and experimental results are compared from the viewpoint of the acoustic performance and energy efficiency of the compressor.
Using ray-optics code incorporated with three-dimensional PDP cell simulation, we have analysed the energy flow in the PDP cell from the electric power input to the visible light output. Also, the visible light output profile and viewing angle distribution were obtained. We applied our code to the analysis of the barrier rib height effect on the visible light luminance and efficiency of the sustaining discharge. Although cells with higher barrier rib generate more VUV photons, less ratio of visible photons are emitted toward front panel due to the shadow effect. Thus, there exists optimal barrier rib height giving the highest visible luminance and efficiency. This kind of code can be a powerful tool in designing cell geometry.

The use of high-voltage gain converters is essential for distributed power generation systems with renewable energy sources, such as fuel and solar cells, due to their low-voltage characteristics. In this study, a novel high-voltage gain non-isolated buck boost converter topology is proposed to cope with the need of a high-voltage conversion ratio without the transformer for the renewable energy sources. Given that the proposed topology utilizes the cascode structure, the voltage gain and the efficiency are higher than those of other conventional non-isolated converters. To demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed topology, the operation principle is presented, and the steady-state characteristics are analyzed in detail. The validity of the proposed converter is verified by experiments with a 400 W prototype converter.
