  • It is not easy to compare the treatment processes and find an optimum operating condition by the experiments due to influent conditions, treatment processes, various operational conditions and complex factors in real wastewater treatment system and also need a lot of time and costs. In this paper, the activated sludge models are applied to four principal biological wastewater treatment processes, $A_2O$(anaerobic/anoxic/oxic process), Bardenpho(4 steps), VIP(Virginia Initiative Plant) and UCT(University of Cape Town), and are used to compare their environmental and economic assessment for four key processes. In order to evaluate each processes, a new assessment index which can compare the efficiency of treatment performances in various processes is proposed, which considers both environmental and economic cost. It shows that the proposed index can be used to select the optimum processes among the candidate treatment processes as well as to find the optimum condition in each process. And it can find the change of economic and environmental index under the changes of influent flowrate and aerobic reaction size and predict the optimum index under various operation conditions.

  • This paper is intended to evaluate energy efficiency policy in demand side, to assess the residential sector's energy efficiency policy and to analyze the system of energy efficiency practices. We examined residential energy consumption over the period 1990~2006. The decomposition method in the analysis was a logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI) techniques to decompose changes in energy intensity. First of all, the energy use in residential sector was adjusted to correct weather-induced variations in energy consumption, because adjustments for normal weather patterns facilitated inter-temporal comparison of intensity. The analysis on the residential sector shows that the overall energy intensity of the residential sector declined at an average 1.0% per year, while the structure effect increased by 1.8% per year, and the activity effect increased by 0.7% per year. In other words, the decline of floor space, number of household, and appliance ownership per capita has an effect on increase in residential consumption. The improvement in energy efficiency had strong contribution on the decrease of energy consumption. We find that the general results of analysis on residential energy are similar to those of IEA. The energy efficiency policy in residential sector is assessed to obtain some results during 1990~2006. In residential sector, structural variables such population per household, diffusion of appliance and activity factor such as population contributed to the increase of energy consumption while energy intensity effect induced the decrease of energy consumption. These findings are consistent with international trend as well as our prior expectation.

  • This study was aimed at examining the recent and the future changes of tourism climatic conditions for Chiaksan national park using TCI(Tourism Climate Index). The distribution type of daily mean of TCI showed the bimodal-shoulder peaks for all periods of the past and the future. Therefore, Chiaksan national park showed affordable climate of touring in spring and autumn due to temperature and relative humidity constituting Cid and Cia. Summer tourism climatic conditions of Chiaksan national park has become worse recently. In the future, these trends are projected more stronger. Also, the lowest TCI in the year is projected to shift from winter to summer due to a decrease of Cid.

  • Rheological properties of gelatinized potato starch were investigated with Brookfield wide-gap viscometer at various conditions. The gelatinized potato starch at 3-7% showed a pseudoplastic behavior with yield stress, and presented thixotropic properties with time-dependent structural decays. The consistency index and yield stress of gelatinized starch were proportional to starch concentration but inversely proportional to measurement temperature, and the flow behavior index did not show constant relationship. The consistency index and yield stress of the gelatinized starch on addition of phosphate decreased as the flow behavior index increased. The values of activation energy at initial and equilibrium were 1.52 kcal/g.mole and 127 kcal/g.mole, respectively.

  • Spatial information on forest biomass is an important factor to evaluate the capability of forest as a carbon sequestrator and is a core independent variable required to drive models which describe ecological processes such as carbon budget, hydrological budget, and energy flow. The objective of this study is to understand the relationship between satellite image and field data, and to quantitatively estimate and map the spatial distribution of forest biomass. Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+) derived vegetation indices and field survey data were applied to estimate the biomass distribution of mountainous forest located in Gwangneung Experimental Forest (230 ha). Field survey data collected from the ground plots were used as the dependent variable, forest biomass, while satellite image reflectance data (Band 1~5 and Band 7), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI), and RVI (Ratio Vegetation Index) were used as the independent variables. The mean and total biomass of Gwangneung catchment area were estimated to be about 229.5 ton/ha and $52.8{\times}10^3$ tons respectively. Regression analysis revealed significant relationships between the measured biomass and Landsat derived variables in both of deciduous forest ($R^2=0.76$, P < 0.05) and coniferous forest ($R^2=0.75$, P < 0.05). However, there still exist many uncertainties in the estimation of forest ecosystem parameters based on vegetation remote sensing. Developing remote sensing techniques with adequate filed survey data over a long period are expected to increase the estimation accuracy of spatial information of the forest ecosystem.

  • The objectives of this study were to measure particle size and evaluate the effect of increasing alfalfa hay particle size on production characteristics in lactating Holstein dairy cows. Ninety multiparous Holstein cows in early to mid-lactation were randomly assigned in a complete randomized design for a 30-day period. Animals were offered one of the three diets, which were identical in energy, protein, and chemical composition, but differed only in particle size of alfalfa hay. The treatments were A) total mixed ration (TMR) in which only fine chopped alfalfa hay was incorporated in the ration, B) the same diet in which half of the alfalfa hay was fine chopped and incorporated in the mixed ration and half was long hay and offered as a top dressing, and C) the same diet with long hay alfalfa offered as a top dressing. Distribution of particle size of rations was determined through 20,000, 8,000 and 1,000 ${\mu}m$ sieves. The new method of quantitative determination of manure index was examined for each cow on different treatments. The geometric mean length of particle size in the rations was 5,666, 9,900 and 11,549 ${\mu}m$ for treatments A, B and C, respectively. Fat corrected milk (4%), milk fat percentage and production were significantly different (p<0.05) in treatment A versus B and C (fat corrected milk (FCM, 4%)) 28.3 vs. 35.2 and 32.3 kg/d, fat percentage 2.89, 4.04 and 3.62; but the change of ration particle size had no significant effect on milk production (p>0.05). Blood concentration of cholesterol in treatment A was significantly higher (p<0.05) than treatment B and C (181.0 vs. 150.0 and 155.2 mg/dl). Manure index in treatment C was significantly different (p<0.05) from treatment B (15.86 vs. 17.67). Based on these experimental findings, it is concluded that an increase in the ration particle size can increase milk fat percentage due to providing more physically effective fiber, which in turn could effect changes in manure consistency.

  • It is suggested that evaluation of diet quality may be a great indicator of nutritional assessment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diet quality of children and adolescents based on nutrient and food group intake and Diet Quality Index-International (DQI-I). This survey was conducted through questionnaires and diet record survey to 477 students (elementary school students; n = 131, middle school students; n = 136, and high school students; n = 210). The results showed that high school students were significantly more often to skip breakfast compared with the other groups. The middle and high school students consumed significantly higher intakes of food and energy compared to the elementary school students. Also the number of nutrients in Index of Nutritional Quality (INQ) < 1.0 of high school students were significantly higher than that of elementary and middle school students. The Korean's dietary diversity score (KDDS) of elementary school, middle school and high school students were 4.1, 4.4 and 4.3 respectively. The average DQI-I of elementary school, middle school and high school students were 66.7, 65.5, and 63.7, respectively and there was significant difference. Also, middle school students showed to have higher score in variety and adequacy category compared with the other groups, and elementary school students appeared to have higher score in moderation category. In conclusion, high school students appeared to have unhealthy dietary habits in terms of high frequency of skipping breakfast and lower INQ and DQI-I score compared to the elementary school and middle school students. Therefore, the proper dietary management should be needed for high school students.

  • Squid is one of the important fisheries resources in Korea. Therefore, squid has been designated and managed as a target species of total allowable catch (TAC) since 2007, but the catch amount is gradually decreasing. The analysis was conducted to identify the change of relative fishing power index to develop the vessel and gear technology that may have improved the fishing efficiency of the offshore squid jigging fishery from 1960s to 2010s. Gross tonnage per fishing vessel increased with the increase in size until 1990, but then gradually decreased to 41.0 tons in 2000 and 37.1 tons in 2010. The illuminating power (energy consumption) by fishing lamps increased to 180 kW in 2005 and stabilized to 120 kW in 2015. Jigging machine started to be supplied to fishing vessels from the early 1970s, and fish finders began to be supplied in the early 1980s and gradually increased. Therefore, the relative fishing power index in the offshore squid jigging fishery increased from 1.0 in 1980 to 1.1 in 1990, to 3.5 in 2000 and to 2.5 in 2010, but the increment rate slowed down gradually. The results are expected to contribute to reasonable fisheries stock management.

  • This study was carried out to develop the biochemical pulping method to enhance energy saving and decrease the capital cost through the soda pulping under atmospheric pressure (100%). Nonwood substrates, rice straw, were pretreated by white-rot fungi, Ganoderma Iucidum. It has acquired several basic data that can be applied in bio-soda pulping. The results of this study were as follow. Without any nutrients or with glucose, N and glucose+N the weight losses of rice straws inoculated by Canoderma Iucidum were 8.5~29.8%, 9.3~32% 11.8~30.1% and 11.8~24.4% respectively for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 days incubation. The more extending incubation periods, the more increasing weight losses. The yield of untreated rice saw was 54.8% after pulping. When any nutrients was not added or glucose, N and glucose+N were added for the pretreatment, the total yields were ranged 50.6~38.5%, 48.6~34.4%, 47.2~38.4% and 49.5~42.6% respectively for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 days incubation. The yields were gradually decreased based on extending of incubation. The physical properties of rice straw soda pulps without fungal treatment, the density, breaking length, burst index, tear index and folding endurance were 0.24 g/$\textrm{cm}^3$, 2.32 km, 0.91 kPa $m^2$/g, 56.7 mN.$m^2$/g and 35 times, respectively. After pretreatment without any nutrients or with glucose, N and glucose+N as nutrients the density was 0.27~0.30 g/$\textrm{cm}^3$, the breaking length 3.14~5.25 km, burst index 1.42~2.78 kPa.$\textrm{m}^2$/g, tear index45.8~64.5 mN.$\textrm{m}^2$/g and folding endurance 47~288 times at all incubating periods when pulping was done. The physical properties were increased with the increasing incubation periods. However, when glucose+N was added, the physical properties were shown superior results each incubating duration.
