  • This study is concerning to identify the hygienic problems occurring in processing, storage, and distribution of Rehmanniae radix crude, and to investigate the possibility of application of safe and hygienic ${\gamma}-irradiation$ techniques. The results are as follows. To compare the contents of catapol, index compound of Rehmanniae Radix crude, between before and after ${\gamma}-irradiated$,0,2.5,5,7.5,10,12.5,15,20, and 30 kGy of ${\gamma}-irradiation$ was applied to standard catapol and Rehmanniae radix crude. The contents of catapol in standard material and Rehmanniae radix crude were decreased with the increase of ${\gamma}-irradiation$ level. However, active components of Rehmanniae Radix crude were not changed with ${\gamma}-irradiation$. These results indicate that active components of Rehmanniae Radix crude were preserved after ${\gamma}-irradiation$ and those of Rehmanniae Radix crude did not showed significant change after irradiation of ${\gamma}-ray$ up to 20 kGy.

  • Objectives: Studies that reported the association between diet quality/nutritional intake status and mortality have rarely used long-term follow-up data in Asian countries, including Korea. This study investigated the association between the risk of mortality (all-cause and cause-specific) and the diet quality/nutritional intake status using follow-up 12-year mortality data from a nationally representative sample of South Koreans. Methods: 8,941 individuals who participated in 1998 and 2001 Korea Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys were linked to mortality data from death certificates. Of those individuals, 1,083 (12.1%) had died as of December, 2012. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate the relative risks of mortality according to the level of diet quality and intakes of major nutrients. Indicators for diet quality index and nutritional intake status were assessed using MAR (mean adequacy ratio) and energy and protein intake level compared with the 2010 Korean DRI. Results: Higher diet quality/nutritional intake status were associated with lower mortality; the mortality risk (95% confidence interval) from all-cause of lowest MAR group vs highest was 1.66 (1.27 to 2.18) among ${\geq}30$ year old, and 1.98 (1.36 to 2.86) among 30~64 year old individuals. Those with below 75% of energy and protein intake of Korean DRI had higher mortality risks of all-cause mortality compared to the reference group. Diet quality/nutritional intake status was inversely associated with mortality from cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Conclusions: Poor Diet quality/nutritional intake status were associated with a higher risk of mortality from all-cause and mortality from cardiovascular diseases and cancer among South Korean adults.

  • Recently, a lot of epidemiological studies revealed that low HDL-cholesterol level was a better predictor of risk for coronary heart disease than total cholesterol. This study investigated the anthropometric parameters, clinical blood indices, and dietary factors influencing serum HDL-cholesterol level by using a cross-sectional study for Korean female college students. The subjects were 94 female college students. They were divided into three groups according to their serum HDL-cholesterol levels, low HDL-cholesterol (<50 mg/dL, n=20), medium HDL-cholesterol (50 $\leq$, < 60 mg/dL, n=39) high serum HDL-cholesterol groups (60 $\leq$ mg/dL, n = 35). This study examined their demographic data and dietary intake throughout a questionnaire. Clinical blood indices were measured using an automatic blood chemistry analyzer (Selectra E), after 12 hours of fasting. BMI, body weight, fat mass, and waist circumferences were significantly increased according to low serum HDL-cholesterol levels. Serum lipid analysis showed a significantly higher level of TG, LDL-/HDL-Ratio, atherogenic index in the low HDL-cholesterol group. Serum levels of GPT, uric acid and alkaline phosphatase in the low HDL-cholesterol group were significantly higher than in the other group. The average consumption of energy was 1627 kcal and 77.76% of estimated energy requirement (EER). The mean ratio of calories from carbohydrate: protein: fat was 57:15:28. The low HDL-cholesterol group was significantly higher than the other groups in eggs, fat and oils consumption. Interestingly, milk and diary products consumption of low HDL-cholesterol group was half (p < 0.05) of those of the other groups. In conclusion, serum HDL-cholesterol levels appeared to be decreased by increasing BMI, fat mass, waist circumference, and serum TG level. In addition, some dietary factors seemed to be related to serum HDL-cholesterol levels. However, further research is needed to elucidate the exact relationship between serum HDL-cholesterol level and dietary factors.

  • The purpose of this study was to assess the daily steps, physical activities and activity coefficient of the elementary school children in the rural area. Body weight, height and daily steps were measured and one-day activity diaries were collected by interviewing children. The average age of the subjects was $9.96{\pm}1.02$ years. Average height, weight, obesity index, body fat and muscle of subjects were $136.2{\pm}8.9cm,\;35.2{\pm}8.5kg,\;99.6{\pm}18.8%,\;22.9{\pm}8.5%\;and\;35.8{\pm}6.0%$, respectively. The average daily steps of the subjects was 17,584 and daily steps (19,314) of 3rd grade students was significantly higher than that (15,712) of 5th grade children. But there was no significant difference in daily steps and activity coefficients between boys and girls. Daily steps (23,347) of exercise group showed the significantly higher than that (16,144) of non-exercise group. Gender and grade of subjects did not have significant influence on activity coefficients, but there was a significant difference in activity coefficient on weekdays between the exercise group ($1.82{\pm}0.30$) and non-exercise group ($1.50{\pm}0.21$). Analysis of variance revealed stronger associations between daily steps and body fat (%) than between daily steps and BMI. Daily steps showed significant negative correlation with body fat (%) measured using two methods r=-0.321 and r=-0.365, respectively. Activity coefficient was significantly correlated (r=0.436) with daily steps, thus increasing daily steps cm prevent and treat childhood obesity by increasing the energy expenditure. The higher activity coefficients (weekday 1.56, weekend 1.53) of the subjects was caused by the fact that rural students spent more time outside and enjoyed stronger activities than urban students. The results of this study can be used to estimate energy requirements for Korean children based on exercise levels and living areas.

  • A series of polyimide was prepared by reacting 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) as the anhydride monomer and 2,2'-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzidine (TFB), 2,2'-bis(3-aminophenyl)hexafluoropropane (BAFP), 2,2'-bis(3- amino- 4-methylphenyl) hexafluoropropane (BAMF), bis(3-aminophenyl)sulfone (APS), p-xylyenediamine (p-XDA), or m-xylyenediamine (m-XDA) as the amine monomer in N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc). Colorless and transparent polyimide (PI) films were obtained by casting the poly(amic acid)s (PAAs) solution at various heat treatment temperatures. The thermal properties of the PI films were examined using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and thermomechanical analysis (TMA) and the mechanical properties were investigated using universal tensile machine (UTM), Their optical transparencies were also investigated using ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis.) spectrophotometry and colorimetry. The yellow index (YI) and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) values of all PIs were in the range 0.98~2.76 and 25.73~55.23 $ppm/^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • Physiological signals such as body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure and heart rate variability and biomechanical workload for stress analysis were investigated during the cherry tomato harvesting work in a greenhouse. The skin temperatures raised $0.05^{\circ}C$/min, $0.03^{\circ}C$/ min, and $0.08^{\circ}C$/min in standing, stooping and squatting postures, respectively. Breath rate significantly increased from 18 to 28 breaths/min during the cherry tomato harvesting work. As the heart rate during the work ranged from about 72 to 110 beats/min (bpm), the cherry tomato harvesting work appeared to be a light intensity task of less than 110 bpm. The worker's average energy consumption rate in three positions during 43 min working time was 65.74 kcal (91 kcal/h in 70 kg). This was a light intensity of work, compared to 75 kcal/h in 70 kg of basic metabolic energy consumption rate of a worker with 70 kg weight; The maximum shear force on the disk (L5/ S1) due to static workload in the cherry tomato harvesting work was 446 N in the stooping posture, 321 N in the squatting posture and 287 N in the standing posture. Acute stress index expressed with the heart rate variability, increased parasympathetic activation up to about 70 while workers were doing most agricultural work in this study. This study provided a system to measure quantitatively workers' physiological change, kinematics and kinetic factors without any restrictions of space in the greenhouse works.

  • Probably herbivorous fishes were visibility main body as aquatic substantial production in offshore and adjacent sea. It is a major problem to estimation of energy conversion rate by hervivores from primary production when to be measurement for potential productivity of herbivores as above meaning according to deductive method. This was deal with review of I index, with mean transfer efficiency from food in seawater to food in gut be eaten by a particular species. Yet $K_i$ was not settled with an established theory. In this review coefficients of food selection or electivity indices suggested by two Russian biologists, Ivlev and Sorygin, (r-p) /(r+p) and (r/p) were understand unsuitable to use with the transfer efficiency $K_i$. But CCOS that is one of community resemblance chord is suggested to be possible with someone a treatment, as (CCOS)$\times$(Filtering rate).

  • The necessity of exploration in deep sea increases to develop the natural resources. The deep marine sediments, which were recovered from the hydrate occurrence regions during the Ulleung Basin Gas Hydrate Expedition 2 (UBGH2), East Sea, Korea in 2010, are explored to obtain the geotechnical characteristics and strength parameters. The index properties of the specimens including the atterberg limits, specific surface, and particle size distribution are measured and compared with the previous studies. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy are conducted to analyze the clay mineralogy, chemical composition, and microstructure of the sediments. Strength parameters and shear wave velocities are measured with the axial strain by using an instrumented triaxial device. The strength parameters estimated by empirical equations are compared with the experimental results.

  • This study for the understanding of the radiation environment according to the altitude in urban area in the summer observes the long and short wave radiation environment at the 4 urban areas with different height and the 1 suburban area. The results of this study are as follows. (1) When the altitude was high, the more short wave radiation was observed. (2) As the altitude was high, the temperature of atmosphere got lower. And because of that the downward long wave radiation was also lower. This general trend was confirmed through the study. (3) Through the observation of long wave radiation, the upper atmosphere of suburban area had the atmosphere characteristic which the temperature was rising and decreasing faster. Therefore, the difference radiation characteristics between the urban and suburban area were confirmed. (4) The result of the ratio of short wave radiation to long wave radiation(short wave radiation/long wave radiation) according to the altitude and location, the value was increased when the distance was far from the artificiality structure or a heat source, and the urban effect became smaller. Thus, it is expected that the ratio will be an evaluation index for evaluating urbanization effect.
