  • In this study, the effect of high-energy proton irradiation on the optical properties of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) films was investigated. PAN thin films spin-coated on a substrate were irradiated 150 keV proton ions at various fluences. The changes in the chemical structure and optical properties were investigated by FT-IR and UV-vis spectroscopy. The results of the FT-IR analysis revealed that the cyclization reaction took place by proton irradiation and the degree of cyclization increased with an increasing fluence. Based on the UV-vis analysis, the optical band gap of PAN decreased from 2.84 to 2.52 eV with an increasing fluence due to the formation of carbon clusters by proton irradiation. In addition, the number of carbon atoms per carbon cluster and the number of carbon atoms per conjugation length were found to be increased with an increasing fluence.

  • In this work, an energy harvester (EH) on the rotating shaft has been proposed for a wireless sensor system (WSS) applications. The EH was designed and implemented to the shaft with a diameter of 20 cm to continuously power a wireless sensor system (WSS). The rotor has coils wound in pairs on seven U-shaped cores attached to the shaft. The stator consists of eight pairs of magnets attached to eight I-cores and they are fixed to an outer fixture. The generated power of the EH was investigated as function of the air gap between the rotor and stator, the number of turn of coils, and shaft speed. The fabricated EH produced power up to 2.87 W at 300 rpm and the 3 mm air gap.

  • Currently, fuel efficiency becomes one of critical issues for automotive industries as concerns about environmental and energy problems grow. In an automatic transmission of an automobile, a drag torque due to a viscous drag of a fluid between friction and clutch plates is one of factors that degrade fuel economy. In this work, the drag torque characteristics of a wet clutch was experimentally investigated with respect to rotational speed, temperature of automatic transmission fluid (ATF), and gap between friction and clutch plates. The experimental results showed that drag torque increases to a certain level, and then decrease to the steady state value with increasing rotational speed. This behavior may be associated with two-phase flow of air and ATF at gap between friction and clutch plates. Also, it was found that the maximum drag torque value decreased as ATF viscosity decreases with increasing temperature. However, it was shown that the point at which the maximum drag torque occurs was not significantly affected by the ATF temperature. In addition, maximum drag torque was found to decrease as the gap between friction and clutch plates increased from 0.1 mm to 0.2 mm. Furthermore, it was observed that the generation of maximum drag torque was delayed as the gap increased. The outcomes of this work are expected to be helpful to gain a better understanding of drag torque characteristic of a wet clutch, and may therefore be useful in the design of wet clutch systems with improved performance.

  • In this paper, propose an efficient arc detection and control method to achieve fast machining speed, improved precision and surface roughness in discharge machining, especially for carbide and hard material processing and metal processing using discharge phenomenon as energy. A single discharge waveform is divided into three sections of Td (Time-Delay), Ton (Time-on) and Toff (Time-off) and the gate control timing is simulated using the HDL language. In this paper, we analyze the effect of the gap between the electrode and the workpiece on the machining results by determining the operation of the servo mechanism by sampling the Td section through the comparator circuit. As a result of the analysis, the Td section of the formed waveform was more precisely sampled at a high speed and the results were improved when applied to the gap control between the electrode and the workpiece.

  • MOS-FET structured gas sensors were manufactured using MWCNTs for application as NOx gas sensors. As the gas sensors need to be heated to facilitate desorption of the gas molecules, heat dispersion plays a key role in boosting the degree of uniformity of molecular desorption. We report the desorption of gas molecules from the sensor at $150^{\circ}C$ for different sensor electrode gaps (30, 60, and $90{\mu}m$). The COMSOL analysis program was used to verify the process of heat dispersion. For heat analysis, structure of FET gas sensor modeling was proceeded. In addition, a property value of the material was used for two-dimensional modeling. To ascertain the degree of heat dispersion by FEM, the governing equations were presented as partial differential equations. The heat analysis revealed that although a large electrode gap is advantageous for effective gas adsorption, consideration of the heat dispersion gradient indicated that the optimal electrode gap for the sensor is $60{\mu}m$.

  • This paper contains results of the theoretical studies of the electrical breakdown properties in sulfur hexafluoride. Since the strong interaction of high-energy electrons with the polyatomic sulfur hexafluoride molecule causes their rapid deceleration to the lower energy of electron capture and dissociative attachment, the breakdown is only possible at relatively high field strengths. From the breakdown voltage curves, the effective yields that characterize secondary electron productions have been estimated. Values of the effective yields are found to be more consistent if they are derived from the experimentally determined values of the ionization coefficient and the breakdown voltages. In addition, simulations were performed using an one-dimensional Particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo collision code. The obtained simulation results agree well with the available experimental data with an error margin of less than 10% over a wide range of pressures and the gap sizes. The differences between measurements and calculations can be attributed to the differences between simulation and experimental conditions. Simulation results are also compared with the theoretical predictions obtained by using expression that describes linear dependence of the breakdown voltage in sulfur hexafluoride on the pressure and the gap size product.

  • Neutron reflecting effects in terms of effective multiplication factor have been calculated with varying water or concrete thickness, and gap distance between concrete reflector and a fissile solution system. A numerical calculation of effective multiplication factors has been carried out by using the discrete ordinates method with the help of the computer code, ANISN. It is revealed that the reflecting .effect by thin concrete is lower than that of the identical thickness of water while the effect by thick water is low compared to that of the identical thickness of concrete. It seems that the effective multiplication factors are first decreasing rapidly with gap distance, which is filled with water, between concrete reflector and the fissile solution system, and then decrease slowly over the distance of about 15cm.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of building integrated PV application method on power generation. PV modules were integrated to a hypothetical apartment building facade in Seoul, Korea. Three different design options of PV panel mounted on exterior wall were developed for the analysis of cooling effects through ventilation. Numerical simulations using TRNSYS coupled with COMIS were executed to evaluate the design options. Their facade configurations are such as vertically installed PV panels with or without air gap between PV rear surface and exterior wall surface, and the tilted PV panels attached to the exterior wall at an angle of to the horizontal. Parametric results show that there is little difference regardless of the air 9ap width between PV rear surface and exterior wall surface. Special strategies which could effectively cool a PV panel to increase the electric power are required if we prefer to a vertical facade configuration in a building integrated PV installation. Consequently, it is expected that there is no reason for architect to install vertically PV panels with air gap unless active strategies are considered.

  • The single crystals of p-$CdIn_2Te_4$ were grown by the Bridgman method without the seed crystal. From photocurrent measurements, it was found that three peaks, A, B, and C, correspond to the intrinsic transition from the valence band states of $\Gamma_7(A)$, $\Gamma_6(B)$, and $\Gamma_7(C)$ to the conduction band state of $\Gamma_6$, respectively. The crystal field splitting and the spin orbit splitting were found to be 0.2360 and 0.1119 eV, respectively, from the photocurrent spectroscopy. The temperature dependence of the $CdIn_2Te_4$ band gap energy was given by the equation of $E_g(T)=E_g(0)$ - $(9.43\times10^{-3})T^2$/(2676+T). $E_g(0)$ was estimated to be 1.4750, 1.7110, and 1.8229 eV at the valence band states of A, B, and C, respectively. The band gap energy of $p-CdIn_2Te_4$ at room temperature was determined to be 1.2023 eV.

  • [ $InxGa_{1-x}P/GaAs$ ] structures were grown by chemical beam epitaxy(CBE), Pure phosphine($PH_3$) gases were used as group V sources. for the group III sources, TEGa, TmIn were used. $InxGa_{1-x}P$ epilayer was grown on SI-GaAs substrate and has a 1-${\mu}m$ thick. We have investigated the characteristics of $InxGa_{1-x}P$ by the photoreflectance(PR) spectroscopy, The PR spectrum of $InxGa_{1-x}P$ shows third-derivative feature whose Peaks Provide energy gap. The energy gap of $InxGa_{1-x}P$ has deduced composition x. From temperature dependance of PR spectra, temperature coefficient is $dEg/dT=-3.773{\times}10^{-4}$ eV/K, and Varshni coefficients $\alpha$ and $\beta$ values obtained $4{\times}10^4$ eV/K and 267 K respectively. Also, interaction $\alpha$B was 19.4 meV using the Bose-Einstein temperature relation, and $\Theta$ value related the average phonon frequency were 101.4 K. In particular, shoulder peak related to defects observed in PR signal that measured in temperature 82 K.
