  • The IAEA launched the International Project on Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuel Cycles (INPRO) and developed the INPRO Methodology to provide guidelines and to assess the characteristics of a future innovative nuclear energy system in areas such as safety, economics, waste management, and proliferation resistance. The proliferation resistance area of the INPRO Methodology is reviewed here, and modifications for further improvements are proposed. The evaluation metrics including the evaluation parameters, evaluation scales and acceptance limits are developed for a practical application of the methodology to assess the proliferation resistance. The proliferation resistant characteristics of the DUPIC fuel cycle are assessed by applying the modified INPRO Methodology based on the developed evaluation metrics and acceptance criteria. The evaluation procedure and the metrics can be utilized as a reference for an evaluation of the proliferation resistance of a future innovative nuclear energy system.

  • Pyroprocessing (or pyrometallurgy) is the way of extracting from materials subjected to high temperatures. Generally, this process has a high energy consumption because of mass production and heating-up. To attain effective and efficient energy management, energetic analysis using 0-dimensional model is usually conducted. However, this model can lead to a misunderstanding about energy evaluation due to many assumptions and limitations. In this study, heat & mass balance using 0-dimensional model was reviewed to systematize problems and considerations in general process energy evaluation.

  • In Korea, various community investment renewable project models are being implemented to increase community acceptance of renewable energy. An important factor for enhancing local acceptance is that renewable energy projects have a positive effect on revitalizing the local economy such as income increase or job creation for residents and local companies. To maximize the local economic effect of large-scale community investment renewable energy projects, this study developed an evaluation index for local economy activation, whose indicators are the local return on investment, local companies' participation, local job creation, regional cooperation, transparency, and governance. Analysis of existing evaluation indicators and current renewable projects, financial analysis, and expert interviews were used in this research. The pilot evaluation determined that, the local economic effect was high in the following order: a fund investment wind project (Gangwon), benefit-sharing wind project (Jeju), and general wind project. In particular, residents' investment amount, the number of participating residents, and the amount and transparency of the regional cooperation fund were key factors to expand the effect of local economy activation. This evaluation index could be used in public bidding for renewable energy projects such as offshore wind zoning areas of local government.

  • The objective of this study is to present a basis for the evaluation on the renewable energy dissemination program in Korea applying the outcome evaluation, one of the five types of evaluation methods of EERE, DOE, and the effectiveness indicator, which is suggested by IEA, OECD. The outcome evaluation quantifies achievements of program outputs and outcomes against planned time frame. We analyze the correlation coefficients between cumulative expenditure on the renewable energy dissemination program and each renewable energy deployment and the unit installation cost of several dissemination programs for the outcome evaluation. Meanwhile, the effectiveness indicator is calculated by dividing the additional renewable energy deployment achieved in a given year by the remaining mid-term realizable potential to 2020 in each source of renewable energy. The results show that correlation coefficients between cumulative expenditure and each renewable energy deployment are significantly positive during the implementation period of each deployment program. And photovoltaic energy, bio energy, and wind power energy show high effectiveness indicator.

  • The performance evaluation of a new building is becoming more important because efficient design alone is often not sufficient to deliver an efficient building. However, there is a lack of standard evaluation methods to measure the energy performance of a new construction that has Energy Conservation Design Measures(ECDMs). This study presents an enhanced method based on calibrated whole-building simulation for evaluating the energy performance of new commercial buildings and demonstrates its use using a case-study building, including: an Energy Use Index(EUI) comparison with sub-metered data and an evaluation of the performance of specific ECDMs. The use of this method has determined that the case-study building was shown to use approximately 47% less energy than the base-case building that has the same shape and function as the case-study building(i.e., calibrated as-built simulation mode]), but doesn't include the simulated ECDMs.

  • As the environmental impacts of fossil fuel energy sources increase, the South Korean government has tried to change non-environmental-friendly enery sources to environmental-friendly energy sources in order to mitigate environmental effects, which lead to global warming and air pollution. With both a limited budget and limited time, it is essential to accurately evaluate the economic and environmental effects of renewable energy projects for the efficient and effective operation of renewable energy plants. Although the traditional economic evaluation methods are not ideal for evaluating the economic impacts of renewable energy projects, they can still be used for this purpose. Renewable energy projects involve many risks due to various uncertainties. For this reason, this study utilizes a real option method, the Geske compound model, to evaluate the renewable energy projects on Jeju Island in terms of economic and environmental values. This study has developed an economic evaluation model based on the Geske compound model to investigate the influences of flexibility and uncertainty factors on the evaluation process. This study further conducts a sensitivity analysis to examine how two uncertainty factors (namely, investment cost and wind energy production) influence the economic and environmental value of renewable energy projects.

  • Existing BIM(Building Information Modeling) based energy evaluation tools cannot be utilized enough for the potential performance of BIM because most of them have not provided the integrated model for energy evaluation, assessment of the material, cost of the construction, and so on. This research aims to propose and develop a new application, EcoBIM, to support an integrated evaluation of the energy and cost efficiencies of the design alternatives within the design process. The proposed application functions as a BIM-based evaluation system that calculates energy-savings performance as well as the construction cost of the alternatives at the design stage. This study mainly focuses on the possibilities of developing the proposed technology. We also suggest an advanced design process using the proposed system, corresponding to changes of national regulations in Korea. This study deduce that EcoBIM can allow architects to make suitable decisions regarding energy- and cost-efficient designs. The proposed design process will allow architects not only to check the eco-friendly performance of design alternatives but also predict the operation cost in a certain period in the future. EcoBIM can prevent large-scale design changes required to obtain environmental certification and enable the owner to make an informed decision about the initial investment of construction according to the result of the analysis of the energy requirement at the design stage.

  • Currently, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia etc. are actively utilizing energy simulation for efficiency evaluation of building energy. However, domestic energy efficiency assessment system doesn't use energy simulation system properly at present: parameters based architecture plans and Ashrae Standard are inputted for the evaluation, because the input parameters for the simulation haven't been established yet. This fact causes poor reliability during energy simulation, as the values of the two standards are different from each other. Therefore, the aim of the study is to set domestic standard parameter for BIM-based energy performance evaluation, focusing on possession area per person of occupants at government office in Korea. We found that the difference among the result values occurred approximately 3% in the energy simulation. As a result of the analysis, possession area per person of occupants in Government office is $31.87m^2$. Other input parameters may be set based on this. This will increase the reliability of energy simulation through a domestic standard parameter.

  • The energy consumption of apartment houses is affected by various factors. The criteria for assessing current energy usage are area, region and purpose. The purpose of this study is to obtain the reliability of the method of evaluating the existing energy consumption certificate and to derive usable evaluation factors according to the correlation of factors affecting energy consumption. The research process collects energy usage data for apartment houses in Daegu and calculates statistical results through correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. As a result, it was found that the power energy is influenced by the yearly factor of physical characteristics, and the heat energy and total energy usage are influenced by the energy source which is energy characteristic factor.
