  • To present the design direction of the thermoelectric module (TEM) refrigerator, analysis of the effect of the design parameters on the energy efficiency and performance of the refrigerator is performed. The design parameters considered are the cooling capacity of the TEM and the heat transfer performance of the heating and cooling surface of the TEM. The heat transfer performance is the most effective design parameter for improving cooling power. The smaller ΔT and cooling capacity of the TEM make the higher efficiency of the refrigerator.

  • This paper presents the thermomechanical and fracture mechanics evaluation procedure of thermal striping damage on the secondary piping of LMFR using Green's function method and standard FEM. The thermohydraulic loading conditions used in the present analysis are simplified sinusoidal thermal loads and the random type data thermal load. The thermomechainical fatigue damage was evaluated according to ASME code subsectionNH. The analysis results of fatigue for the sinusoidal and random load cases show that fatigue failure would occur at a geometrically discontinuous location during 90,000 hours of operation The fracture mechanics analysis showed that the crack would be initiated at an early stage of the operation. The fatigue crack was evaluated to propagate up to 5 ㎜ along the thickness direction during the first 944 and 1083 hours of operation for the sinusoidal and the random loading cases, respectively.

  • A two-dimensional numerical model to study the performance of anode-supported flat-tube solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) far the cross section of the cell in the flow direction of the fuel and air flows is developed. In this model a mass and charge balance, Maxwell-Stefan equation as well as the momentum equation by using, Darcy's law are applied in differential form. The finite element method using FEMLAB commercial software is used for meshing, discritization and solving the system of coupled differential equations. The current density distribution and fuel consumption as well as water production are analyzed. Experimental data is used to verify a predicted voltage-current density and power density versus current density to judge on the model accuracy.

  • This paper presents a method of design for the energy harvesting of a piezoelectric cantilever beam. Vibration modes have strain nodes where the strain distribution changes in the direction of the beam length. Covering the strain nodes of the vibration modes with continuous electrodes effects a cancellation of the voltages outputs. The use of segmented electrodes avoids cancellations of the voltage for multi-mode vibration. The resistive load affects the voltage and generated power. The optimum resistive load is considered for segmented and continuous electrodes, and then the power output is verified. One of the effective parameters on energy harvesting performance is the existence of concentrated mass. This topic is studied in this paper. Resonance and off-resonance cases are considered for the harvester. In this paper, both theoretical and experimental methods are used for satisfactory results.

  • Previous researchers have studied how to reduce a pumping power in order to save energy in the fluid transporting system. Especially, it has been studied a lot about reducing the pressure drop among parameters related to the energy saving for fluid transport. This study is to investigate the effect of a substantial drag reduction caused by the polymer(A611P, A601P) when the working fluids flow to the vertical and horizontal direction in the vertical cylindrical equipment of closed flow system. In this experiment, we mount a visualization equipment on the test section and take pictures. With using the PIV system, instrument and analyzing the movement of bubble for different polymer concentration are observed and some mechanism of the drag reduction effect is clarified.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve heat transfer by attaching rectangular fins to tube. Experiments were carried out under the following conditions - Aspect ratio$(W_f/R_f)$ is 0.7, 1.2 and 1.8. Temperature conversion between high and low positions of water in the thermal storage appeared because maximum density point of water is about $4^{\circ}C$ and inlet direction of working fluid influenced conductive heat transfer Compared with the unfinned tube(bare tube), the rectangular tube increased the ice thermal storage energy and the ice thermal storage energy was increased as aspect ratio was increased.

  • Conformational free energy calculations using an empirical potential function and a hydration shell model(program CONBIO) were carried out on hypoglycemic agent acetohexamide and tolazamide in the unhydrated and hydrated states. The initial geometry of sulfonylureas was obtained from X-ray crystallographieal data and homologous molecular fragments. In both states, the feasible conformations were obtained from the calculations of conformational energy, conformational entropy, and hydration free energy by varying all the torsion angles of the molecules. From the calculation results, it is known that the conformations] entropy is the major contribution to stabflize the low-free-energy conformations of two sulfonylureas in both states. But, in hydrated state, the hydration does not directly affect each conformations. The intramolecular hydrogen bonding of sulfonylurea hydrogen and 7-membered nitrogen appeared to the conformations of tolazamide in both states. It is thought that the hydrogen bonding decrease steric hindrance on the receptor binding direction. The substitution of alicyclic or N-heterocyclic ring than that of carbons chain of urea moiety may be properly interaction between sulfonylureas and the putative pancreatic receptor.

  • This study developes the vibration model to estimate the vibration energy of compact disc player's mainbase assembly which is supported by dampers and springs, and this model is verified by experiment. From frequency response function, we investigate the natural frequency and mode shape in the up/down direction for mainbase assembly. In order to determine the analysis frequency band, we investigate the excitation frequency of road from the vehicle test. As the characteristics of dampers and springs are changed, we carry out the sensitivity analysis of vibration energy for mainbase assembly which include optical pick-up and feeding system. And we found out that the properties of damper were dominant element in the vibration energy of mainbase assembly's CG(center of gravity).

  • The characteristics for pollutant transport in tidal influenced area was investigated using tidal wave hydraulic scale model. Hydraulic scale model was composed of the tidal generator, attenuation area and channel. Also, wave height, current meter and conductivity meter were used with the measured instruments in hydraulic scale model. NaCl with a tracer was used to evaluate the advection phenomena under the different velocity profiles. The arrival time of the maximum concentration in the condition of the relatively fast velocity was measured about 30 seconds faster than ones in the conditions of low velocity. The measured concentrations of the tracer were shown in the detection points of the flow direction consecutively.

  • Recently there was a proposal for a spin filter by using the spin superlattice structure. In a certain energy range, the proposed structure exhibits a high spin filtering efficiency close to 100%. Unfortunately such energy range turns out to be narrow. In this paper, we report a method to widen the energy range by using an analogy to optical anti-reflection coating. In optics, it is well known that a stack of alternating layers of two dielectric materials can function as a highly transmissive or reflective filter for wide range of wavelength. Since electrons also have wave character as light, it would be possible to make an electronic analog of an optical filter. We demonstrate that alternating layers of two materials with different g-factors can function as a spin filter that allows electrons to be transmitted only when their spins point towards a certain particular direction. This spin-superlattice-based spin filter operates in wide energy ranges, curing the problem in the previous proposal.
