  • Surveillance has become one of promising application areas of wireless sensor networks which allow for pervasive monitoring of concerned environmental phenomena by facilitating context awareness through sensor fusion. Existing systems that depend on a postmortem context analysis of sensor data on a centralized server expose several shortcomings, including a single point of failure, wasteful energy consumption due to unnecessary data transfer as well as deficiency of scalability. As an opposite direction, this paper proposes an energy-efficient distributed context-aware surveillance in which sensor nodes in the wireless sensor network collaborate with neighbors in a distributed manner to analyze and aware surrounding context. We design and implement multi-modal sensor stations for use as sensor nodes in our wireless sensor network implementing our distributed context awareness. This paper presents an initial experimental performance result of our proposed system. Results show that multi-modal sensor performance of our sensor station, a key enabling factor for distributed context awareness, is comparable to each independent sensor setting. They also show that its initial performance of context-awareness is satisfactory for a set of introductory surveillance scenarios in the current interim stage of our ongoing research.

  • Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have many potential applications and unique challenges. Some problems of WSNs are: severe resources' constraints, low reliability and fault tolerant, low throughput, low scalability, low Quality of Service (QoS) and insecure operational environments. One significant solution against mentioned problems is hierarchical and clustering-based multipath routing. But, existent algorithms have many weaknesses such as: high overhead, security vulnerabilities, address-centric, low-scalability, permanent usage of optimal paths and severe resources' consumption. As a result, this paper is proposed an energy-aware, congestion-aware, location-based, data-centric, scalable, hierarchical and clustering-based multipath routing algorithm based on Numerical Taxonomy technique for homogenous WSNs. Finally, performance of the proposed algorithm has been compared with performance of LEACH routing algorithm; results of simulations and statistical-mathematical analysis are showing the proposed algorithm has been improved in terms of parameters like balanced resources' consumption such as energy and bandwidth, throughput, reliability and fault tolerant, accuracy, QoS such as average rate of packet delivery and WSNs' lifetime.

  • Energy aware server clusters aim to reduce power consumption at maximum while keeping QoS(Quality of Service) compared to energy non-aware server clusters. They adjust the power mode of each server in a fixed or variable time interval to let only the minimum number of servers needed to handle current user requests ON. Previous studies on energy aware server cluster put efforts to reduce power consumption further or to keep QoS, but they do not consider energy efficiency well. In this paper, we propose an energy efficient cluster management based on autonomous learning for energy aware server clusters. Using parameters optimized through autonomous learning, our method adjusts server power mode to achieve maximum performance with respect to power consumption. Our method repeats the following procedure for adjusting the power modes of servers. Firstly, according to the current load and traffic pattern, it classifies current workload pattern type in a predetermined way. Secondly, it searches learning table to check whether learning has been performed for the classified workload pattern type in the past. If yes, it uses the already-stored parameters. Otherwise, it performs learning for the classified workload pattern type to find the best parameters in terms of energy efficiency and stores the optimized parameters. Thirdly, it adjusts server power mode with the parameters. We implemented the proposed method and performed experiments with a cluster of 16 servers using three different kinds of load patterns. Experimental results show that the proposed method is better than the existing methods in terms of energy efficiency: the numbers of good response per unit power consumed in the proposed method are 99.8%, 107.5% and 141.8% of those in the existing static method, 102.0%, 107.0% and 106.8% of those in the existing prediction method for banking load pattern, real load pattern, and virtual load pattern, respectively.

  • In this paper we propose a traffic aware Demand Wakeup MAC(TADW-MAC) protocol, in which low data delay and high throughput can be achieved, for wireless sensor networks. With the TADW-MAC protocol, the problem of the DW-MAC protocol, which schedules only one packet to deliver during the Sleep period in a multi-hop transmission is resolved. DW-MAC is not adequate for the applications such as object tracking and fire detection, in which busty data should be transmitted in a limited time when an event occurs [6-8]. When an event occurs, duty cycle can be adjusted in the TADW-MAC protocol to get less energy consumption and low latency. The duty cycle mechanism has been widely used to save energy consumption of sensor node due to idle listening in wireless sensor networks. But additional delay in packet transmission may be increased in the mechanism. Our simulation results show that TADW-MAC outperforms RMAC and DW-MAC in terms of energy efficiency while achieving low latency.

  • In order to reduce transmission delay and increase reliability in networks, mainly high-performance and high-power network equipment is used to guarantee network quality. In this paper, we propose an optimization algorithm to minimize the energy consumed when transmitting traffic in networks with a bundle link composed of multiple physical cables. The proposed optimization algorithm is a meta-heuristic method, which uses tabu search algorithm. In addition, it is designed to minimize transmission energy by minimizing the cables on the paths of the source and destination nodes for each traffic. In the proposed optimization algorithm, performance evaluation was performed in terms of the number of cables used in the transmission and the link utilization for all traffic on networks, and the performance evaluation result confirmed the superior performance than the previously proposed method.

  • In the wireless sensor network environment, clustering scheme has a problem that a large amount of energy is unnecessarily consumed because of frequently occurred entire re-clustering process. Some of the studies were attempted to improve the network performance by getting rid of the entire network setup process. However, removing the setup process is not worthy. Because entire network setup relieves the burden of some sensor nodes. The primary aim of our scheme is to cut down the energy consumption through minimizing entire setup processes which occurred unnecessarily. Thus, we suggest a re-clustering scheme that considers event detection, transmitting energy, and the load on the nodes. According to the result of performance analysis, our scheme reduces energy consumption of nodes, prolongs the network lifetime, and shows higher data collection rate and higher data accuracy than the existing schemes.

  • Data aggregation is a fundamental problem in wireless sensor networks which attracts great attention in recent years. Delay and energy efficiencies are two crucial issues of designing a data aggregation scheme. In this paper, we propose a distributed, energy efficient algorithm for collecting data from all sensor nodes with the minimum latency called Delay-aware Power-efficient Data Aggregation algorithm (DPDA). The DPDA algorithm minimizes the latency in data collection process by building a time efficient data aggregation network structure. It also saves sensor energy by decreasing node transmission distances. Energy is also well-balanced between sensors to achieve acceptable network lifetime. From intensive experiments, the DPDA scheme could significantly decrease the data collection latency and obtain reasonable network lifetime compared with other approaches.

  • Energy-harvesting wireless sensor networks(EH-WSNs) can collect energy from the environment and overcome the technical limitations of existing power. Since the transmission distance in a wireless sensor network is limited, the data are delivered to the destination node through multi-hop routing. In EH-WSNs, the routing protocol should consider the power situations of nodes, which is determined by the remaining power and energy-harvesting rate. In addition, in applications such as environmental monitoring, when there are urgent data, the routing protocol should be able to transmit it stably and quickly. This paper proposes an adaptive routing protocol that satisfies different requirements of normal and urgent data. To extend network lifetime, the proposed routing protocol reduces power imbalance for normal data and also minimizes transmission latency by controlling the transmission power for urgent data. Simulation results show that the proposed adaptive routing can improve network lifetime by mitigating the power imbalance and greatly reduce the transmission delay of urgent data.

  • Currently one of the most importance issues in industrial sector is energy cost and energy efficiency. The manufacturing plants especially have made many efforts to reduce energy cost by implementing maintenances. But in many cases, they are not aware that how much energy could be saved more. If we know the best energy consumption, which signifies energy baseline, we can control the intensity of maintenances. One way to obtain the baseline is using proper statistics from a specific plant, a sector of industry. Energy bandwidth signifies the gap between actual Specific Energy Consumption(SEC) of a certain plant and minimum SEC of the best plant, and estimate energy saving potential(ESP) is a result of bandwidth analysis. We chose a model plant and implemented some maintenance for a year, and then we obtained ESP. Additionally we could determine the decreased amount of carbon emissions from the plant using Carbon Emissions Factor(CEF) by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC).
