W. v. Humboldt′s Thought (빌헬름 폰 훔볼트의 언어사상)

  • This research focuses on the humboldt's thought for language. In Korea, only two themes, 'worldview' and 'nation' , problem of 'energeia' and 'ergon', was mostly researched. But we must research all together his thoughts, in order to understand his complete thoughts. His thoughts consist six themes : 1 . relation between thought and language. 2. problem of language-generation. 3. problem of translation. 4. substance of language. 5. worldview and nation. 6. energeia and ergon. From this five themes, we can understand, what his origin thought is. Therefore, we explained sequentially five themes in our paper. The theme 1, 5 and 6 are often interpretated between the scholars in Korea. But the theme 2 and 3 are not yet known. Therefore, we tried to explain it in this paper, what the problem of language-generation and the problem of translation are.tion and the problem of translation are.

Aristotle and Praxis (아리스토텔레스와 실천행위)

  • On the one hand Aristotle seems to insist that practical acts are intrinsically good. On the other hand his doctrine of certain connected concepts is such that as a consequence practical acts must be considered good due to their being means to eudaimonia. This Aristotelian dilemma challenged by commenters. Cooper bases his attack on a consideration of Aristotle's account of deliberations. Deliberation is not just concerned with means in a strictly causal sense, but with things that contribute to the end. And these may also be constituent parts of complex ends or particular things that a given end may be seen to consist in. The difference between energeia and kinesis implies the distinction between praxis and poiesis. In kinesis such as 'building a house' and 'trying to save a child from drowning' we cannot sever, logically, 'the act' from the intended act-result, since no act will be left once that logical operation has been performed. The definition of poiesis relies on the possibility of such severance. But the fact that an act is kinesis has no implications whatever for the question whether it is a praxis or poiesis.

  • This thesis, centered on J. Locke and W. v. Humboldt's concept of language, is written for the purpose of illuminating their view of language and investigating the relationship between a matter of language and that of thought. First, Locke considers language was to be the great instrument and common tie of society. And language consists of words, and words are signs of ideas. Locke's discussion in language is shaped by his belief that these conditions of the transference of knowledge were in his time commonly unsatisfied, especially in two domains. First, there was no agreed classification of 'substance' based on careful observation and experiment. Second, the ideas associated with the names of mixed modes often varied both in the usage of different people and in that of the same person at different times. But Humboldt deals with 'the diversity of the structure of human language' and deals with it in respect of 'its influence on the spiritual development of mankind.' According to his theory, a language is not work(ergon) but an activity(energeia). Its true definition may therefore only be genetic. It is after all the continual intellectual effort to make the articulated sound capable of expressing thought. In short, he conceives of language as a particular 'intellectual effort'.
