In this paper, we present a 3D reconstruction method of color volume data for a computerized human atlas. Binary volume rendering which takes the advantages of object-order ray traversal and run-length encoding visualizes 3D organs at an interactive speed in a general PC without the help of specific hardwares. This rendering method improves the rendering speed by simplifying the determination of the pixel value of an intermediate depth image and applying newly developed normal vector calculation method. Moreover, we describe the 3D boundary encoding that reduces the involved data considerably without the penalty of image quality. The interactive speed of the binary rendering and the storage efficiency of 3D boundary encoding will accelerate the development of the PC-based human atlas.

MP3 is one of the most widely used file formats for encoding and representing audio data. One of the reasons for this popularity is their significant ability to reduce audio file sizes in comparison to other encoding techniques. Additionally, other reasons also include ease of implementation, its availability and good technical support. Steganography is the art of shielding the communication between two parties from the eyes of attackers. In steganography, a secret message in the form of a copyright mark, concealed communication, or serial number can be embedded in an innocuous file (e.g., computer code, video film, or audio recording), making it impossible for the wrong party to access the hidden message during the exchange of data. This paper describes a new steganography algorithm for encoding secret messages in MP3 audio files using an improved least significant bit (LSB) technique with high embedding capacity. Test results obtained shows that the efficiency of this technique is higher compared to other LSB techniques.
Recently, DVC (Distributed Video Coding) is receiving a lot of attention as one of the low complexity video encoding techniques suitable for various applications with computation-limited and/or power-limited environment, and is being actively studied for improving the coding efficiency. This paper proposes a rate-distortion based selective block encoding scheme. First, the motion information is obtained in the process of generating side information at decoder and received through the feedback channel, and then, based on this information, the proposed method performs a selective block encoding based on rate-distortion optimization. Experimental results show that the performance of the proposed scheme reaches up to 2.2 dB PSNR gain over the existing scheme. Moreover, it is shown that the complexity can be reduced by encoding parts of region considering rate-distortion cost.
To expedite UHD (Ultra High Definition) video service, the HEVC (High-Efficiency Video Coding) technology has recently been standardized and it achieves two times higher compression efficiency than the conventional H.264/AVC. To obtain the improved efficiency, however, it employs many complex methods which need complicated calculation, thereby resulting in a significantly increased computational complexity when compared to that of H.264/AVC. For example, to improve the coding efficiency of intra frame coding, up to 35 intra prediction modes are defined in HEVC, but this results in an increased encoding time than the H.264/AVC. In this paper, we propose a fast intra prediction mode decision scheme which reduces computational complexity by changing the number of intra prediction mode in accordance with the percentage of PU sizes for a given video resolution, and by classifying the 35 intra prediction modes into 4 categories considering video resolution and quantization parameter. The experimental results show that the total encoding time is reduced by about 7% on average at the cost of only 2% increase in BD-rate.
HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) achieves high coding efficiency by employing a quadtree-based coding unit (CU) block partitioning structure and various prediction units (PUs), and the determination of the best CU partition structure and the best PU mode based on rate-distortion (R-D) cost. However, the computation complexity of encoding also dramatically increases. In this paper, to reduce such encoding computational complexity, we propose three fast PU mode decision methods based on encoding information of upper depth as follows. In the first method, the search of PU mode of the current CU is early terminated based on the sub-CBF (Coded Block Flag) of upper depth. In the second method, the search of intra prediction modes of PU in the current CU is skipped based on the sub-Intra R-D cost of upper depth. In the last method, the search of intra prediction modes of PU in the lower depth's CUs is skipped based on the sub-CBF of the current depth's CU. Experimental results show that the three proposed methods reduce the computational complexity of HM 14.0 to 31.4%, 2.5%, and 23.4% with BD-rate increase of 1.2%, 0.11%, and 0.9%, respectively. The three methods can be applied in a combined way to be applied to both of inter prediction and intra prediction, which results in the complexity reduction of 34.2% with 1.9% BD-rate increase.
In this paper, We propose a new semiautomatic segmentation method using spatio-temporal similarity. In the proposed scheme, segmentation is performed using gradual region merging and hi-direction at spatio-temporal refinement. Simulation results show the efficiency of the proposed method in semantic object extraction.
The H.264/AVC provides gains in compression efficiency of up to 50% over a wide range of bit rates and video resolutions compared to previous standards. However, to achieve such high coding efficiency, the complexity of H.264/AVC encoder is also increased drastically than previous ones, mainly because of mode decision. In this paper, we propose a three-step mode decision algorithm for fast encoding in H.264/AVC. In the first step, we select skip mode or inter mode by considering the temporal correlation and spatial correlation. In the second step, if the result of the first step is INTER mode, we select one group between two groups for final mode. In the third step, we select final mode by exploiting the pixel values of error macroblock or the modes of adjacent macroblocks. Simulations show that the proposed method reduces the encoding time by 42% on average without any significant PSNR losses.

This paper proposes a new reseeding methodology using a variable-rank multiple-polynomial linear feedback shift register (MP-LFSR). In the proposed reseeding scheme, a test cube with large number of specified bits is encoded with a high-rank polynomial, while a test cube with a small number of specified bits is encoded with a low-rank polynomial. Therefore, according to the number of specified bits in each test cube, the size of the encoded data can be optimally reduced. A variable-rank MP-LFSR can be implemented with a slight modification of a conventional MP-LFSR and Multiple Polynomial can be represented by adding just 1 bit to encoding data. The experimental results on the largest ISCAS'89 benchmark circuits show that the proposed methodology can provide much better encoding efficiency than the previous methods with adequate hardware overhead.
H.264/AVC is an authoritative international video coding standard which shows code and efficiency more improved than the existing video standards. Above all, the parameter block mode of H.264/AVC significantly contributes much to high compression efficiency. However, as the occasion demands, users tend to pass while overlooking the part that can produce a little higher compression efficiency. We, taking notice of this point, are designed to bring in much higher compression efficiency by gathering up the overlooked parts. This paper suggests the algorithm that produces efficient performance improvement by using the histogram of luminance in the pixel unit (Macroblock) of respective prediction block and applying specific thresholds. The experimental results proves that the technique proposed by this paper increases the compression efficiency of the existing H.264/AVC algorithm by 0.4% without any increase in the whole encoding time and PSNR complexity.
In this paper, we propose a pre-processing procedure to obtain scene change information using spatial down-scaled input image for efficient encoding of super-high resolution image and propose a reconstruction of reference picture list in inter-picture prediction using this information. The experimental results show that the proposed method improves the BD-Rate by 0.44% and reduces encoding time by 12.46% when compared to HM 16.12.
