  • According to the research taken by the National Statistical Office, the fertility rate of a Korean fertile female is 1.17. This figure is the lowest in the world, and the reduction in the fertility rate over the last 30 years was the biggest in the world. It can be seen as a warning alarm about the effects of a low birth rate and a silver society. Assuming that there are several factors involved in this phenomenon, this study inquired into the attitude towards children, attitude towards nourishing children, attitude towards sex roles and the harmony between the jobs and families of married females, and examined the factors that influence the willingness to give birth. Final 581 copies of the survey questionnaire were used for analysis and the collected data were analysed by SPSS, Pearson's correlation analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and Duncan's Multiple Range Test. Three main conclusions were reached: Firstly, the value variables, such as sex-role attitudes and the preference for work or home, affect the willingness to give birth. Therefore, it can be said that one's values have a significant effect on these variables and the willingness to give birth. Secondly, both working morns and housewives have a strong tendency to give a birth if they are supported on child rearing. Finally, the employment of the married women itself can be a variable that can affect childbirth. In other words, the working hours affect employed married women so as sex-role attitudes, the preference between work and home, ideal number of children, and the income to housewives. Also, even in whole married women, the employment itself can be a major factor of the willingness to have a baby. Therefore, unemployed married women have more of a tendency to have children than employed married women.

The data were analyzed by chi-square test, Mann-whitney's U test, and logistic regression with SPSS 17.0 program. The results showed that the employed women's intention of having a second child was affected by the age, working day per week, and policy on childbirth. But, in case of unemployed women, both of demographic and policy variables were not statistically significant. • In recent years, leisure time has received increasing attention in Korean society. Despite the growing interest, however, there are very few studies that explored shared leisure time, especially among married couples. In this light, the present study examined variations in shared leisure time by demographic characteristics and associations between shared leisure time and quality of marital relationship. We used the third wave of the national data KLoWF (Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Families, 9,997 19-64 years old women). The study sample included 5,965 married women with no prior history of divorce. Results showed that Korean wives reported very little shared leisure time with their husbands. Given that the mean of the shared leisure time reported by employed women was significantly lower than that of the un-employed, we speculated that the time constraint may be one of the major barriers to having leisure time with one's spouse among Korean married couples. Married women in their 30's had the most frequent couple leisure time. The younger wives in their 20s had more cultural leisure time with their husbands, but sharing outdoor leisure time was not related to their age. The higher level of education for women was associated with greater shared active leisure time. However, visiting a husband's family often took place regardless of the wives' education level. After controlling for age, years of education, job status and annual family income, shared active leisure time (i.e., cultural activity and exercise) was positively related to marital satisfaction. Visiting one's own family, however, was not considered a leisure activity for Korean wives. Rather, frequent family visits were related to lower marital satisfaction. Findings shed light on how leisure life of married women with spouses are intertwined with not only their socioeconomic status and but also marital relationship in culturally unique ways.

  • This paper examines the intergenerational time transfers between married women and their co-residing elderly parents, and how they affect married women's labor force participation and work hour. The sample was drawn from the "2004 Time Use Survey" conducted by Korea National Statistical Office and the Heckman's 2-step model was estimated to examine these relationships. We find that women's caregiving time for their elderly parents reduces their likelihood of participating in the labor force. On the contrary, parental time transfers for married women increases the probability of their labor force participation. We find no evidence that the actual hours of paid work is related to the time transfers between married women and their elderly parents. In other words, after married women decide to participate in the labor force, their work hours are not affected by the time spent for parents and time gained from parents to them. Parental income is positively associated with the married women's labor force participation whereas husband's income is negatively related. The married women working in service occupation and earn salaries work longer hours than those employed as laborer and wage workers. Having older parents and owning the second home reduce working hours of married women.
