  • Major countries have tighten their NOx regulation of diesel passenger cars. In the case of the EU, the regulation has been toughen up to 6.25 times since 2000. Despite the regulation the NOx concentration of the ambient has not been reduced proportionally. As these issues, to reduce NOx emission practically, Korea and the EU introduced the real-world driving emission (RDE) regulation and the test method that will be applied after 2017. In this paper, for the regulation to make a soft landing in Korea, 6 diesel passenger cars which met Euro 6a~6d regulation and were equipped with LNT/SCR were tested at a chassis dynamometer with environmental chamber applying the off-cycles (FTP, US06, SC03, HWFET and CADC) and several ambient conditions (-7 and $14^{\circ}C$) as well as certification modes (NEDC, WLTC@ $23^{\circ}C$). The result of the test showed that the ambient temp. and the engine load as a test mode impacted the NOx emission of the cars while the vehicles with SCR emitted NOx lower than with LNT. Additionally, to propose an effective RDE test method, the above result was compared with the results of the other papers which tested RDE using the same cars.

  • Interfacial evaluation of various combinations of both Flax and Hemp fibers/polypropylene were performed by using micromechanical test and nondestructive acoustic emission (AE). It can be because interfacial adhesion between the natural fiber surface and matrix plays an important role in controlling the overall mechanical properties of polymer composite materials by transferring the stress from the matrix to the fiber. It is necessary to characterize the interphase and the level of adhesion to understand the performance of the composites properly. Microfailure mechanism of single Flax fiber bundles were investigated using the combination of single fiber tensile test and nondestructive acoustic emission. Microfailure modes of the different natural fiber/polypropylene systems were observed using optical microscope and determined indirectly by AE and their FFT analysis.

  • An acoustic emission technique is applied to the tensile tests of the plastic specimen under the different test speeds and the structural integrity evaluation of the plastic shell structure. Several AE characteristics are acquired from the tensile tests and they are proven to be useful parameters in evaluating its structural integrity. The results shows that tensile strength has almost constant value over some higher speed region while revealing some increasing tendency in strength as the test speeds up in lower speed region. The crack initiation loads and locations are accurately evaluated during the static compression testing of the plastic shell structures by using acoustic emission technique.

  • We have carried out IGRINS test observations during its May commissioning run. Our targets were composed of three Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs), one supernova remnant (SNR), and an unidentified stellar source emitting [Fe II] 1.644 um line. In the preliminary results, three LBVs MWC 314, P Cygni, and AFGL 2298 show different characteristics: the spectrum of MWC 314 which is known to be in a binary system clearly shows double-peak structures in hydrogen and iron lines, the P Cygni spectrum reveals the Brackett series of hydrogen emission lines with prominent P-Cygni profiles, and AFGL 2298 likely at its visual minimum phase shows rather different spectrum with relatively weak hydrogen lines. The SNR (G11.2-0.3) was to test the sensitivity of IGRINS for diffuse emission. We successfully detected a dozen H2 emission lines with a velocity width of ~13 km/s, which might indicate a C-shock origin. The unidentified stellar source was one of stellar/compact sources of unknown nature detected in the survey of the Galactic plane in [Fe II] 1.644 um emission line (http://gems0.kasi.re.kr/uwife/). Its spectrum is under investigation. We will present the spectra of test observations and will discuss their scientific significance.

  • This research is about the exhaust gas and driving performance test which are for CNG-Diesel dual fuel engine. The CNG-Diesel dual fuel engine converted from 2500cc diesel has two steps of injection systems; small amount of diesel is injected to mixture CNG in cylinder to ignite before CNG is injected into each intake manifold to form mixture. The amounts of output power and emission in duel fuel consumption were measured by engine dynamometer and exhaust gas analyzer. Over 90% of diesel consumption reduction, similar driving performance to current diesel engine and reduced emission on $CO_2$ and PM, respectively, were indicated through the measurements. The two steps of system were applied to vehicle to investigate exhaust gas characteristics and driving performance via NEDC mode and real driving test. Additional oxidation catalyst was applied to reduce emission on the test vehicle and the NEDC mode test showed the reduction of Co, $CO_2$, Pm and THC.

  • Selective Catalytic Reduction is effective in the reduction of NOx emission. This research focused to evaluate the performance of a urea-SCR system and was conducted in two procedures. One is SCR reactor test using model gas in order to provide an optimal injection condition itself. In this step, some parametric study on emission temperature, space velocity, aspect ratio and the formation of urea spray were made by using flow visualization and Computation Fluid Dynamics techniques. The basic simulation results contributed in determining the layout for an actual engine test. The other is an engine performance and emission test. The urea injector was placed at the opposite direction of exhaust gases emitted into an exhaust duct and an optimal amount of a reducing agent is estimated accurately under different engine loads and speeds. Furthermore, the variation of NOx emission and applied amount of urea was investigated in terms of modes under the condition of with and without SCR, and other emissions such as PM, CO and NMHC were evaluated quantitatively as well. This research may provide fundamental data for the practical use of urea-SCR in future.

  • In order to improve the quality of air in urban areas, the emission regulations are being strengthened by the government. The on-road test of light-duty vehicles was started with PEMS because certification test mode does not sufficiently reflect on-road conditions. Therefore, The PEMS-based test was implemented from Sep. 2017 in Europe and Korea. However, this is lack of data on various on-road patterns in Korea. The purpose of the present study has analyzed the effect of speed per acceleration and acceleration on NOx emission on-road driving. The test route consisted of urban, rural, and motorway in Seoul. This study has been conducted by Euro-6 vehicles using on SCR system with PEMS. The on-road emission characteristics were evaluated by moving averaging windows (MAW) method. In results, RDE-NOx by severe driving pattern has been 1.4 times higher than soft driving pattern NIER Route 1.

  • Background and objective: While response measures to particulate matters in rural areas are limited due to poor inventory record keeping in the agricultural sector, it is necessary to control agricultural waste vinyl and the emission of precursors released from open burning and the secondary generation of particulate matters. Currently, the open burning emission calculation method uses the definition prescribed in CAPSS by the National Institute of Environmental Research. Methods: This study presented an open burning emission calculation formula for agricultural waste vinyl, which is included as agricultural waste. As for activity data, the open burning ratio of agricultural waste vinyl, and the annual incineration volume provided in the Status Survey by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs were applied. The emission factor was generated through incineration tests on three agricultural plastic film samples collected by the Korea Environment Corporation. Results: Among precursors, SOx and NOx were selected and their emission features were monitored with incineration experiment infrastructure based on the EPA 5G method. The highest emission concentration by agricultural waste type was concentrated in the first and second quarters. As for emission factor of SO2, it was calculated at 98.25 g/kg for mulching-use LDPE, 52.31 g/kg for greenhouse-use LDPE, and 14.40 g/kg for HDPE. As for NOx, it was calculated at 18.21 g/kg for mulching-use LDPE, 16.49 g/kg for greenhouse-use LDPE, and 10.67 g/kg for HDPE. Conclusion: This test confirmed the incineration features of PE-based plastics, ascertained the SOx emission factor that had not been included in open burning in the past, and established that low NOx emission concentration is interfered by soil mixed with livestock excretions. The findings from this study are expected to contribute to improving the system for controlling air pollutants in rural environments.

  • The effect of SNC(silver nano colloid) on the emission reduction of odors such as ammonia ($NH_3$), hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$), and methane ($CH_4$) from swine excreta was studied. Silver has been used as an universal antibiotic substance and can reduce the emission of some gases by sterilizing action. Therefore, an apparatus which produces SNC was developed and was conducted its performance test. Also, the SNC made by the apparatus was applied to swine excreta sampled from a piggery in oder to find the effect on the reduction of odor emission. An electrolysis apparatus was developed to produce SNC and its capacity was 0.024 ppm/$hr{\cdot}L$. The effects of SNC on the reduction of odor emission from swine excreta were tested for bad smell gases of ammonia ($NH_3$), hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) and methane ($CH_4$). For ammonia gas, factorial experiments were conducted to find the effects of concentration and application rate of SNC. The test results for the different concentrations of 20 ppm, 50 ppm, and 100 ppm showed that the more concentration of SNC was increased, the more emission reduction of ammonia gas increased. From the test results about the effect of application rate, the more SNC was applied, the more emission reduction of $NH_3$ increased. In order to reduce the concentration of $NH_3$ below 5 ppm, SNC of 50 ppm is recommended to be applied at an interval of 6 hours, and is mixed with swine excreta in the volumetric ratio of 4:1. For hydrogen sulfide gas, the concentration was decreased as time went by and was reduced rapidly in the first stage of the tests for all applied concentrations of SNC (20 ppm, 50 ppm, and 100 ppm). Especially, when 100 ml of SNC with 100 ppm was applied, emission of hydrogen sulfide gas was reduced rapidly during early 4 hours after the application of SNC. And, concentration of hydrogen sulfide gas was maintained below 20 ppm after 12 hours. For methane gas, t-test showed that there was no significance on the effect of its application for all applied concentrations of SNC. Therefore, it was concluded that the application of SNC on swine excreta had no effect on the emission reduction of $CH_4$.
