  • Heterotopic pregnancy is named when an extrauterine (ectopic) pregnancy coexists with an intrauterine pregnancy simultaneously by many causes such as PID (pelvic inflammatory disease), endometriosis, IUD (intrauterine device), previous pelvic surgery and others. This is very rare in general population, with a range of occurrence estimated between 1:7963 and 1:30000. But recently the incidence has increased as the uses of ARTs (assisted reproductive technologies) including ovulation induction, IVF-ET (in-vitro fertilization and embryo transfer) and GIFT (gamete intrafallopian transfer) increase. Because this has high maternal morbidity, mortality and fetal loss, early diagnosis and proper management is very important. We report a case of heterotopic pregnancy following IVF-ET with a brief review.

  • An outbreak of duck virus hepatitis was confirmed for the first time in Korea from ducklings having up to 40~65% mortality in less than 15-day-old ducklings of two farms located in the vicinity of Kwangju city. The infected ducks showed sudden death and opisthotonus position. The predominant gross lesions were found in the liver, showing enlargement and petechial or ecchymotic hemorrhages. The microscopic findings were consisted of fatty changes and necrosis of the hepatic cells, and proliferation of the bile duct epithelium. The presence of the virus was detected by electron microscopy of the sera and livers of infected ducks. The duck embryo and the ducks inoculated with the liver materials from the infected ducks showed the same lesions with those of the naturally infected ducks.

  • Embryotoxicity tests were performed in Daphnia magna to assess aquatic ecotoxicity of bisphenol A, a well known industrial compound showing estrogen-like activity in vivo, and to examine their effectiveness in the toxicological assessment. The whole embryonic developmental period was classified into 6 stages and developmental abnormality was checked to evaluate the embryotoxicity. In the present study, bisphenol A showed the ability to interfere with embryonic development, suggesting its antiecdysteroidal activity. The rates of mortality, delayed development, deformity and immobility all showed good concentration-response relationship, demonstrating their possibility as useful toxicological indices in daphnid embryotoxicity tests that have been rarely performed so far. It seemed favorable to the test sensitivity that embryos are removed from maternal daphnids around 7 hr after deposition from the ovaries to the brood chamber. These results suggest that daphnid embryotoxicity tests can be one of useful tools available for the assessment of ecotoxicity of various chemicals in the aquatic environment.

  • This study was performed to evaluate effects of different holding temperatures and storing periods during the pre-incubation period on egg hatchability of hens egg in broiler breeders. For the treatments 1(T1)~7(T7), which were stored fur 1(T1) to 7 days(T7) before egg incubation, respectively. There were three replicates per treatment and forty eggs per replicate. This study was performed twice, which were 40(Summer) and 50 weeks of age(Autumn) in broiler breeders. Storing ambient temperature of egg, egg weight, at 0 and 18 days during incubation, fertility, hatchability and embryo mortality were examined. Average hatchability was rapidly decreased only in Summer. Although it was not significantly different in Autumn. This experiment was concluded that storing periods of hatchery egg was influenced hatchability, especially in high ambient temperature conditions(Summer, above $25^{\circ}C$ ). In conclusion, we found out that optimum hatchability can be achieved with a storage temperature of 13 ~$19^{\circ}C$ for broiler breeder eggs stored for up to 7 days.

  • The study was carried out to assess the production performances of Japanese quail parent stock raised under open housing system and the study was conducted in a local farm with 2000 Japanese parent stock quail birds (Coturnix coturnix japonica). Observed body weight gain was recorded in each weekend up to 7 weeks of their age; birds gained weight 15.73, 31.45, 47.20, 90.80, 125.27, 153.14 and 175.20 grams, respectively. There have been observed sharp decline of fertility and hatchability of birds with increase of their age. Optimum fertility was recorded at third week and optimum hatchability at fifth week of their age. Average flock uniformity was found 83.68%. The hen day egg production of the flock was recorded 81, 83, 85, 86, 89, 89, 89, 89 and 88% in each weekend, respectively. It may therefore be concluded that Japanese quail parent stock performs well under open housing system in Bangladesh and future study can be taken to better understand their production performances.

  • Canine pyometra generally occurs in intact female dogs of more than four years of age. However, in rarely cases, pyometra can occur in young bitches. In the present report, two cases of pyometra in thirteen and eighteen months of age were presented. In both cases, absent of vaginal discharge represented that both patients had closed-cervix pyometra and diagnosis was somewhat complicated. In complete blood count, elevated level of leukocyte with left shift was found in both cases. Serum chemistry analysis showed elevation of alkaline phosphatase in both cases. Additionally, mild elevation of aspartate transferase and total protein were also found in $2^{nd}$ case. Radiographic and ultrasonographic findings show the enlargement of uterus and accumulation of fluid contents inside the uterine lumen. Ovariohysterectomy followed by antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs for post-surgery medication was performed for treatment. After a week, both patients fully recovered. To reduce mortality of pyometra in young intact female dogs, radiography or ultrasonography should be indicated immediately in the bitches showing severe infectious inflammation.

  • The embryotoxic effects of PCB (Aroclor 1248) on a Korean frog, Rana dybowskii was deter-mined by using the FETAX (Frog Embryo Teratogenesis Assay-Xenopus) protocol. The rates of mortality and malformed larvae were investigated by probit analysis. The results showed that PCB is highly embryolethal. From LC$_{50}$ of 1.48ppb and from EC$_{50}$ of 0.25ppb and TI of 5.7 were derived, which indicates PCB is to be considered a teratogenic compound. Specific malformations occurred in 62.0% as edema at the 0.1ppb, in 32.0% as tail deformations at the 1ppb, and in 68.0% as profound deformations at the 5ppb of PCB concentration which living embryos were exposed to. PCB suppressed the growth of head-tail length at a relatively low concentration (1.0ppb), and therefore growth inhibition as assessed by embryo length can be used as a sensitive indicator to evaluate the toxicity of pollutants in the environment. In conclusion, PCB must be considered highly embryotoxic to Rana dybowskii.

  • A total of eight strains of avian reoviruses were isolated from chickens with arthritis or stunted growth. The isolations were made from broilers or broiler breeders under 12 weeks of age. The viruses had a typical morphology of reoviruses with double capsid layers and 81nm of diameter. In agar gel precipitation tests, the isolates reacted with antisera prepared against S-1133 or R-1 strains of avian reoviruses and cross reacted with S-1133 antigen. They did not agglutinated RBC's from day-old chicks, adult chickens, guinea pigs, and horses. The isolates showed strong resistance against the treatments of chloroform, IUdR, and heat, When infectivities of the viruses were titrated in cell cultures of chicken embryo fibroblast, chicken embryo liver, and Vero cells, similar end points reached four to five days after inoculation, regardless of tell types and virus inoculation time, either inoculated simultaneously at the time of cell seeding or on confluency. Mean times of mortality of chicken embryos inoculated with the isolates via the chorioallantoic membrane ranged from 54 to 59 hours and that of S-1133 strain was 73 hours.

  • Abdominal pregnancy is a very rare form of ectopic pregnancy following IVF-ET procedure. Because the symptoms of abdominal pregnancy is not typical, it is difficult to diagnose early and the mortality rate is higher than other ectopic pregnancies. Liver, spleen, omentum and diaphragm are main implantation sites of abdominal pregnancy. We reported an unusual first case of an etopic pregnancy on uterosacral ligament following in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer with brief review of literature.

  • Particulate $matter_{2.5}$ ($PM_{2.5}$) is notorious for its strong toxic effects on the cardiovascular, skin, nervous, and reproduction systems. However, the molecular mechanism by which $PM_{2.5}$ aggravates disease progression is poorly understood, especially in a water-soluble state. In the current study, we investigated the putative physiological effects of aqueous $PM_{2.5}$ solution on lipoprotein metabolism. Collected $PM_{2.5}$ from Seoul, Korea was dissolved in water, and the water extract (final 3 and 30 ppm) was treated to human serum lipoproteins, macrophages, and dermal cells. $PM_{2.5}$ extract resulted in degradation and aggregation of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) as well as low-density lipoprotein (LDL); apoA-I in HDL aggregated and apo-B in LDL disappeared. $PM_{2.5}$ treatment (final 30 ppm) also induced cellular uptake of oxidized LDL (oxLDL) into macrophages, especially in the presence of fructose (final 50 mM). Uptake of oxLDL along with production of reactive oxygen species was accelerated by $PM_{2.5}$ solution in a dose-dependent manner. Further, $PM_{2.5}$ solution caused cellular senescence in human dermal fibroblast cells. Microinjection of $PM_{2.5}$ solution into zebrafish embryos induced severe mortality accompanied by impairment of skeletal development. In conclusion, water extract of $PM_{2.5}$ induced oxidative stress as a precursor to cardiovascular toxicity, skin cell senescence, and embryonic toxicity via aggregation and proteolytic degradation of serum lipoproteins.
