  • Purpose: The purposes of this study were to assess the trend of use of statistical methods including parametric and nonparametric methods and to evaluate the use of complex statistical methodology in recent periodontal studies. Methods: This study analyzed 123 articles published in the Journal of Periodontal & Implant Science (JPIS) between 2010 and 2014. Frequencies and percentages were calculated according to the number of statistical methods used, the type of statistical method applied, and the type of statistical software used. Results: Most of the published articles considered (64.4%) used statistical methods. Since 2011, the percentage of JPIS articles using statistics has increased. On the basis of multiple counting, we found that the percentage of studies in JPIS using parametric methods was 61.1%. Further, complex statistical methods were applied in only 6 of the published studies (5.0%), and nonparametric statistical methods were applied in 77 of the published studies (38.9% of a total of 198 studies considered). Conclusions: We found an increasing trend towards the application of statistical methods and nonparametric methods in recent periodontal studies and thus, concluded that increased use of complex statistical methodology might be preferred by the researchers in the fields of study covered by JPIS.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Lower circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels are associated with a higher risk of hypertension (HTN); however, it remains unclear whether the relationship is causal. We aimed to evaluate the causal effects of circulating 25(OH)D levels on the prevalence of HTN in the Korean population using the Mendelian randomization (MR) approach. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Epidemiological data, serum 25(OH)D data, and genomic DNA biospecimens were obtained from 2,591 participants, a subset of the study population in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Survey 2011-2012. Five 25(OH)D-related single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs; DHCR7 rs12785878, CYP2R1 rs10741657, CYP2R1 rs12794714, CYP24A1 rs6013897, and GC rs2282679), identified a priori from genome-wide association studies, were used as instrument variables (IVs) for serum 25(OH)D levels. In the MR analysis, we performed IV analyses using the two-stage least squares method. RESULTS: In the observational analysis, circulating 25(OH)D levels were found to be inversely associated with the HTN prevalence in ordinary least squares models (odds ratio: 0.97, 95% confidence interval: 0.96, 0.99) after adjusting for the potential confounders. There were differences in the circulating 25(OH)D levels across genotypes of individual SNPs. In the MR analysis, using individual SNPs as IVs, 25(OH)D levels were not associated with the HTN prevalence. CONCLUSIONS: We found no association between genetically determined circulating 25(OH)D levels and HTN in Korean adults. Our results are listed owing to the relatively small sample size and possible weak instrument bias; therefore, further studies are needed to confirm these results.

  • The purpose of this study is to elicit the planning factors for the embodiment of sense of place in public library. This study analyzes qualitatively the good places where the children seek for and evaluate in children's library. The primary method of survey in this study is the caption evaluation. The survey is conducted in libraries of three types. In the caption evaluation, children take good places into photograph by themselves and are asked for reasons, features and physical characteristics for the pictures on good places. Through the study of the preceding studies, this study takes four analysis frames, Path, Occupancy Place, Edge and Mark. According to four analysis frames, the principal features, physical characteristics and the examples in libraries of domestic and foreign country are put in order. The meanings of this study are summarized as followings; presenting the method of user's positive evaluation, studying the sense of place in children's view point, and presenting the interrelation pattern for embodiment of the rich sense of place.

  • Each human era has its own unique architectural embodiment of religious philosophy at the time. Though, many modern religions have developed their own architectural expression based upon each own religious doctrine, one of the main native Korean religions, Won-Buddhism, has not developed its own proper architectural expression yet. So, the goal of this research is to find the probable architectural design methods for Won-Buddhism doctrines. 1) The history of Won-Buddhism architecture is comparatively analyzed to find the architectural trend of Won-Buddhism. 2) Modern religious architectural cases are analysed and compared between plastic expression and spatial expression types. 3) Won-Buddhism doctrines are analysed to find key characteristics to be used as architectural design concepts and method. Based upon analyses, the main characteristics of Won-Buddhism doctrine are synchronicity, circularity, and liminality, which are found to be similar to the trans-boundary characteristics of contemporary architecture. In the future, more study on these characteristics and how they are materialized, the probable design methodology for Won-Buddhism Doctrines can be proposed.

  • Wolbachia is an obligate symbiotic bacteria that is ubiquitous in arthropods, with 25-70% of insect species estimated to be infected. Wolbachia species can interact with their insect hosts in a mutualistic or parasitic manner. Sequence types (ST) of Wolbachia are determined by multilocus sequence typing (MLST) of housekeeping genes. However, there are some limitations to MLST with respect to the generation of clone libraries and the Sanger sequencing method when a host is infected with multiple STs of Wolbachia. To assess the feasibility of massive parallel sequencing, also known as next-generation sequencing, we used pyrosequencing for sequence typing of Wolbachia in butterflies. We collected three species of butterflies (Eurema hecabe, Eurema laeta, and Tongeia fischeri) common to Korea and screened them for Wolbachia STs. We found that T. fischeri was infected with a single ST of Wolbachia, ST41. In contrast, E. hecabe and E. laeta were each infected with two STs of Wolbachia, ST41 and ST40. Our results clearly demonstrate that pyrosequencing-based MLST has a higher sensitivity than cloning and Sanger sequencing methods for the detection of minor alleles. Considering the high prevalence of infection with multiple Wolbachia STs, next-generation sequencing with improved analysis would assist with scaling up approaches to Wolbachia MLST.
