  • Two different types of solar collector for farm dryer- the flatplate type and the modified tubular type-were constructed and analyzed on their performances. The transparent plastic film, black painted galvanized iron sheet and black vinyl film were used for the cover and absorber of the flat-plate types. The simplified tubular type was constructed with transparent films for the cover and black vinyl films for the absorber Two elliptical iron rings were used to form a tubular shape through which air could pass. No remarkable differences were found in thermal efficiences between the absorbers made with galvanized iron sheet and black vinyl film. The average thermal efficiencies of the solar collectors were 42.8%(max.48.2%, min.38.2%) for flat plate type and 22.971 (max. 25.4%, min. 14.8%)) for tubular one. The empirical equations were proved to be applicable to the prediction of temperature elevation. The tubular solar heat collector was successfully applied to red peppers drying as a practical farm dryer. The drying rate was almost doubled compared to a conventional sun drying.

  • A series of trapdoor model tests was systematically performed in order to investigate soil arching. The mobilized soil arching was clearly observed by change of the vertical earth pressure loaded on trapdoor of soil container box. A slow decent of the loading plate at the trapdoor results in loosening zone over the trapdoor and the stress in this loosening zone was transferred to the stationary zone in the vicinity of the trapdoor. In particular, it was observed that the vertical earth pressure rapidly decreased in the loosening zone and increased in the stationary zone at the trapdoor. Both the maximum decreasing rate of the vertical earth pressure in the loosening zone and the increasing rate of the vertical earth pressure in the stationary zone were not influenced by the ground density, but affected by the size of the trapdoor. The loosening zone could be defined by the elliptical configuration, in which the major axis was twice as long as the height of the loosening zone at the center of trapdoor and the minor axis was the same as the width of trapdoor. The height of loosening zone at the center of trapdoor was one and a half times as long as the width of trapdoor loading plate.

  • In this study, the Kernel integration scheme for 2D linear elastic direct boundary element method has been discussed on the basis of subparametric element. Usually, the isoparametric based boundary element uses same polynomial order in the both basis function and mapping function. On the other hand, the order of mapping function is lower than the order of basis function to define displacement field when the subparametric concept is used. While the logarithmic numerical integration is generally used to calculate Kernel integration as well as Cauchy principal value approach, new formulation has been derived to improve the accuracy of numerical solution by algebraic modification. The subparametric based direct boundary element has been applied to 2D elliptical partial differential equation, especially for plane stress/strain problems, to demonstrate whether the proposed algebraic expression for integration of singular Kernel function is robust and accurate. The problems including cantilever beam and square plate with a cutout have been tested since those are typical examples of simple connected and multi connected region cases. It is noted that the number of DOFs has been drastically reduced to keep same degree of accuracy in comparison with the conventional isoparametric based BEM. It is expected that the subparametric based BEM associated with singular Kernel function integration scheme may be extended to not only subparametric high order boundary element but also subparametric high order dual boundary element.
