Synthesis of Calix[4]arenes in AAAB or AABB Type Substitution at Upper Rim

  • Seven cali[4]arenes, having two different substituents in AAAB or AABB pattern at the upper rim of calix were synthesized by fragmentation condensation reaction of p-substituted phenol trimer (AAA) with 2,6-bishydroxymethylated 4-substituted phenol (B) or that of dimer (AA) with 2,2'-bishydroxymethylated dimer (BB). An equimolar mixture of the coupling components (trimer and monomer or dimer and dimer) was refluxed in dioxane in the presence of TiCl4to afford calix[4]arene 6 and 7 in 15-38% yield. The structure of calix[4]arenes was confirmed by elemental analysis and the 1H/13C NMR spectroscopy.

겨울철 광주지역 $PM_{2.5}$의 화학적 특성 조사 (Investigation of Chemical Characteristics of $PM_{2.5}$ during Winter in Gwangju)

  • 24-hr $PM_{2.5}$ samples were collected from January 19 through February 27, 2009 at an urban site of Gwangju and analyzed to determine the concentrations of organic and elemental carbon(OC and EC), water-soluble OC(WSOC), eight ionic species($Na^+$, $NH^{4+}$, $K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Cl^-$, ${NO_3}^-$ and ${SO_4}^{2-}$), and 22 elemental species. Haze phenomena was observed during approximately 29%(10 times) of the whole sampling period(35 days), resulting in highly elevated concentrations of $PM_{2.5}$ and its chemical components. An Asian dust event was also observed, during which $PM_{2.5}$ concentration was 64.5 ${\mu}g/m^2$. Crustal materials during Asian dust event contributed 26.6% to the $PM_{2.5}$, while lowest contribution(5.1%) was from the haze events. OC/EC and WSOC/OC ratios were found to be higher during haze days than during other sampling days, reflecting an enhanced secondary organic aerosol production under the haze conditions. For an Asian dust event, enhanced concentrations of OC and secondary inorganic components were also found, suggesting the further atmospheric processing of precursor gases during transport of air mass to the sampling site. Correlations among WSOC, EC, ${NO_3}^-$, ${SO_4}^{2-}$, and primary and secondary OC fractions, which were predicted from EC tracer method, suggests that the observed WSOC could be formed from similar formation processes as those of secondary organic aerosol, ${NO_3}^-$ and ${SO_4}^{2-}$. Results from principal component analysis indicate also that the observed WSOC was strongly associated with formation routes of the secondary organic and inorganic aerosols.

실리콘비삽입물 표면의 석회화: 부위별 석회침착물의 특성 (Calcification on the Surface of Silicone Nasal Implants: Regional Properties of Calcification Deposits)

  • The silicone rubber implants are widely used in plastic surgery because of various advantages; however, calcification in surface of implant(as a chemical resistance) may transform or destroy the high molecular biomaterial when it stays too long within the human body. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between calcification and the histological disparities of the tissues surrounding the area adjoining the silicone nasal implant by examining the regional characteristics of calcium deposits in the silicone nasal implant via elemental analyses using EDX(energy-dispersive X-ray analysis) and ultrastructural analyses using SEM(scanning electron microscopy). The subjects of the study were 19 silicone nasal implants removed by revision rhinoplasty, all displaying calcification. According to the tissue characters, the implant surface was divided into 4 zones with the rhinion as the basis. For each zone, elemental and ultrastructural analyses were performed. Elemental analysis revealed that the calcium deposits consisted of Ca and P only. There were no statistically significant disparities among the ratios between Ca and P according to the zones. Ultrastructural analysis showed acellular mineral-like deposits coalesced to create amorphous deposits in all zones; however, in zones 1 and 3(more pressurized zones by periosteum or nasal bone), additional flaky cylinder-shaped calcium deposits were detected. Thus, it seems that the histological disparities in the surrounding tissues do not affect the components and their proportions in the calcification process. However, it can be inferred that the physical environment due to the histological disparities in the surrounding tissues affects the ultrastructures of calcium deposits.

Acidophilic Bacterial Communities of Soil and Enrichment Cultures from Two Abandoned Mine Sites of the Korean Peninsula

  • Bacterial diversity based on the denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis of PCR-amplified 16S rRNA gene sequences was determined for soil samples from two abandoned mine sites and the corresponding enrichment cultures using soil sample as key inoculum. Sequencing analysis of DGGE bands obtained from both the soil samples matched mostly with sequences of uncultured and newly described organisms, or organisms recently associated with the acid mine drainage environment. However, the enrichment of soil samples in ferrous sulfate and elemental sulfur media yielded sequences that were consistent with well-known iron- and sulfur-oxidizing acidophilic bacteria. Analysis of enrichment cultures of soil samples from Dalsung mine revealed abundant ${\gamma}$-$Proteobacteria$, whereas that of Gubong mine sample displayed acidophilic groups of ${\gamma}$-$Proteobacteria$, ${\alpha}$-$Proteobacteria$, $Actinobacteria$ and $Firmicutes$. Chemical elemental analysis of the mine samples indicated that the Dalsung site contained more iron and sulfate along with other toxic components as compared with those of the Gubong site. Biogeochemistry was believed to be the primary control on the acidophilic bacterial group in the enrichment samples.

Geographic authentication of rice (Oryza sativa L.) collected from Asian countries using multi-elements, stable isotope ratio, and chemometric analyses

  • Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the world's third largest food crop after wheat and corn. Geographic authentication of rice has recently emerged as an important issue for enhancing human health via food safety and quality assurance. Here, we aimed to discriminate rice from six Asian countries through geographic authentication using combinations of elemental/isotopic composition analysis and chemometric techniques. Principal components analysis could distinguish samples cultivated from most countries, except for those cultivated in the Philippines and Japan. Furthermore, orthogonal projection to latent structure-discriminant analysis provided clear discrimination between rice cultivated in Korea and other countries. The major common variables responsible for differentiation in these models were ${\delta}^{34}S$, Mn, and Mg. Our findings contribute to understanding the variations in elemental and isotopic compositions in rice depending on geographic origins, and offer valuable insight into the control of fraudulent labeling regarding the geographic origins of rice traded among Asian countries.

Biodiversity of Microalgae and Their Elemental Components from Veeranam Lake, Tamilnadu, India

  • An attempt was made in the Veeranam freshwater lake with the objectives to collect, identify, describe and document the algae occurring from March 2007 to August 2007. Qualitative and quantitative characterization of phytoplankton and analysis of physico-chemical parameters of water samples were carried out at monthly intervals during the study period in the western and eastern sides of the lake. It was found that the phytoplankton community embraced 68 genera belonging to four classes viz., Bacillariophyceae (40), Chlorophyceae (22), Cynophyceae (4) and Euglenophyceae (2). There were significant influences of various physico-chemical parameters on the phytoplankton population density. Commonly occurred genera, Oscillatoria (Cyanophyceae), Navicula (Bacillariophyceae) and Scenedesmus (Chlorophyceae), were subjected to energy dispersive spectroscopic analysis (EDS). They were found to accumulate different elements such as Zn, P, S, Ca, Mg, Fe, N, Si, Cl and Mn. Among these the member Cyanophyceae contained Zn, P, Mg, Ca, Mn, S and N. Bacillariophyceae Si, Zn, Mg, Cl, N, Fe, and Ca. Chlorophyceae Ca, Mg, N, Fe, Cl, Zn, Si and Mn. Thus these observations would determine the chemical dialogue between the cell structures and role of the elements. Further, it gives the clue about the phytoplankton growth requirements.

모발의 탈색 및 퍼머넌트 웨이브 효과에 따른 다-원소금속 성분의 함량 분석 (Analysis of multi-elemental concentration in hair according to effect of permanent wave and bleaching agents)

  • Variations of the twenty one metal components (Mg, Al, V, Cr, Co, Sr, Ba, Na, K Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, As, Hg, Pb, Ca, P, Mo, Cd, Sb) were analyzed in human hair sample by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The effect of bleach and permanent wave manipulation on the elemental composition of hair were investigated. It was found that the composition of hair varied with hair bleach and permanent wave. Hair sample was collected from male in the age of thirties. Hair sample (0.05 g) was added to the Teflon digestion bomb together with 1.5 mL of nitric acid and an appropriate amount of In as an internal standard. The sample was then decomposed in the microwave digestion system. In normal hair, the contents of V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, As, Mo, Cd, Sb and P were increased in permanent wave hair, and Mg, Al, V, Co, Sr, Ba, Na and K were increased in bleached hair. But Mg, Al, Sr, Ba, Hg, Pb, Na, K, and Ca contents were decreased with permanent wave hair, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, As, Hg, Pb and Ca contents were decreased with bleached hair.

Correlation between pit formation and phase separation in thick InGaN film on a Si substrate

  • We demonstrate improved surface pit and phase separation in thick InGaN grown on a GaN/Si (111) substrate, using plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy with an indium modulation technique. The formation of surface pit and compositional inhomogeneity in the InGaN epilayer are investigated using atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and temperature-dependent photoluminescence. Indium elemental mapping directly reveals that poor compositional homogeneity occurs near the pits. The indium-modulation epitaxy of InGaN minimizes the surface indium segregation, leading to the reduction in pit density and size. The phase separation in InGaN with a higher pit density is significantly suppressed, suggesting that the pit formation and the phase separation are correlated. We propose an indium migration model for the correlation between surface pit and phase separation in InGaN.

광주지역 PM2.5 입자 수용성 성분의 화학적 특성조사 (Chemical Characteristics of Water Soluble Components in Fine Particulate Matter at a Gwangju area)

  • 수용성 유기 및 무기성분은 대기 에어로졸 입자의 중요한 구성성분들이며 간접적으로 기후에 영향을 미치는 구름응결핵으로 작용한다. 유기 및 원소탄소(organic and elemental carbon, OC 및 EC) 및 수용성 유기탄소(water soluble OC, WSOC) 및 이온성분농도를 조사하기 위하여 광주지역에서 24시간 기준의 미세입자($PM_{2.5}$)를 측정하였다. 측정기간 중 $PM_{2.5}$ 수용성 분율의 주요성분인 WSOC, $NO_3^-$, $SO_4^{2-}$$NH_4^+$의 평균농도는 각각 2.11, 5.73, 3.51 및 $3.31{\mu}g/m^3$ 이었으며, $PM_{2.5}$ 농도의 12.0(2.9~23.9%), 21.0(12.9~37.6%), 11.6(2.5~25.9%), 및 11.7%(3.8~18.6%)를 차지하였다. 총 수용성 성분(유기+무기) 중 WSOC 화합물이 차지하는 분율은 평균 17.6%(5.4~35.9%)이었다. EC 추적자 기법을 이용해 평가한 2차 OC 및 WSOC 농도는 각각 평균적으로 0.78 및 $0.34{\mu}g/m^3$이었으며, 전체 OC 및 WSOC 중의 평균 17.9%(범위: 0~44.4%) 및 평균 11.2%(범위: 0~51.4%)를 차지하였다. 광주지역 겨울철에 측정한 $SO_4^{2-}$ 입자는 국지적인 기상산화반응보다는 장거리 이동 또는 수용액 변환과정에 의한 영향, 구름 내 변환과정 등이 황산염 입자 생성에 중요하게 작용했을 것으로 판단한다.

  • 진흙버섯 품종별 P. linteus, P. baumii 그리고 P. gilvus에 대한 형태학적 차이, 일반성분 및 무기성분을 조사하였다. 전자현미경 사진에서 P. gilvus와 P. linteus는 비슷한 형태를 보여주고 있다. 원소 함량의 구성비에서는 세 종류의 버섯이 모두 유사함을 보여주었다. 일반성분을 분석 비교시 수분의 함량은 P. baumii가 가장 높았으며 P. gilvus의 수분 함량은 10% 이내로 낮은 경향을 보여주었다. 식이섬유는 약 30% 이상을 함유하고 있으나 vitamin C 및 단백질의 함량은 높지 않았다. 원소분석에서 Ca의 경우 세 종류의 진흙버섯에서 P. baumi가 가장 높은 Ca 함량을 보여주었으나 통계적유의성은 없었다. 그러나 원소조성 및 일반성분 비교에서는 P. linteus, P. baumii 그리고 P. gilvus의 큰 차이점이 나타나지 않았다.
