Although Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) in air has been applied to a wider range of aftertreatment processes for HAPs(Hazardous Air Pollutants), due to its high electron density and energy, its potential use as precharging dust particles is not well known. In this work, we measured size distributions of bimodal aerosol particles and estimated collection efficiency of the particles by electrostatic precipitator(ESP) using DBD as particle charger. To examine the particle collection with DBD charger, nano size particles of NaCl($20{\sim}100$ nm) and DOS($50{\sim}800$ nm) were generated by tube furnace and atomizer, respectively. For experimental conditions of 60 Hz, 11 kV, and 60 lpm, the particle collection efficiency for the hybrid system comprising DBD charger and ESP was over 85 %, based on the number of particles captured.
Electrostatic actuation was adopted for ease of fabrication. We proposed a new driving scheme that uses the vector sum of force generated by comb-finger and by parallel plate. The moving and fixed electrodes are arranged to maximize the driving force. In this paper, an electrostatic field analysis is performed by Maxwell analysis tool for micro actuators. From the analysis, a comb-parallel type micro-actuator with 4${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ width, 6${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ overlap and 45${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ height could be designed. In order to compare the new type of actuator with the conventional comb type of actuator, we arranged that both types have the same area and the same number of actuators. To make a high aspect ratio structure, we are developing fabrication process using SU-8 and electro-plating.
We report on the design and fabrication of an electrostatic 2-axis MEMS stage possessing a platform with a size of $5{times}5mm^2$. The stage, as a key component, would be used in developing probe-based storage devices in the future. It was fabricated by forming numerous $5{\times}5{\mu}m^2$ etching holes in the central platform, as a result, reducing the total number of masks to 1, thereby simplifying the whole fabrication process. Experimental results show that the driving range of the stage was $32{\mu}m$ at the supplied voltage of 20V and the natural frequency was approximately 300Hz. The mechanical coupling between x- and y-motion was also measured and verified to be $25\%$.
We characterized the efficacy of an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) air-cleaner in reducing the concentration of Serratia marcescens in an enclosed space. We used an experimental room ($4.5{\times}3{\times}2.9\;m$) in which electrostatic air-cleaners were located. Two air-cleaners enhanced the equivalent ventilation rates in the chamber by about 3.3 air changes per hour (ACH) over the 2 ACH provided by the mechanical ventilation system. Natural die-off of the organisms provided an additional equivalent of 3 ACH, so that the total ventilation rate with the ESP air-ccleaners was 8.3 ACH. We also examined whether the ESP air-cleaners altered the deposition of Serratia marcescens aerosols on the experimental room surfaces. We did not find any significant differences in the number of colony forming units recovered from surfaces with and without the air-cleaners. We installed UV lights inside the ESPs and determined if UV light, in addition to electrical fields, increased the efficacy of the ESPs. The presence of UV light inside the ESP reduced S. marcescens aerosols by approximately 2 ACH. Finally, a box model indicates that the efficiency of the air-cleaner increases for both biological and nonbiological particles at ventilation rates of 0.2-1, which are typical for residential settings.
PAD(Prediction Algorithm by Difference of sample value)
In our previous study, a wire-plate type electrostatic precipitator (ESP) was developed to collect bioaerosols of 100 nm size. In the study, various flow rates (40 ~ 100 L/min) and applied voltages (3 ~ 10 kV) were tested for experiment. In this study, numerical analysis was performed for the ESP of the previous study with the same flow rates and applied voltages, but with varying the size of bioaerosols to 0.04 ~ 2.5 ㎛. Overall, the numerical analysis results well predicted the experimental data. Bioaerosols of 0.1 ~ 0.5 ㎛ showed the minimum collection efficiency for all conditions because of low charge number. The effect of the ionic wind generated by the corona discharge was calculated. However, the ionic wind did not affect much the collection efficiency. The aerosol collection in the ESP of this study was due to the electrostatic force generated by particle charge in the electric field. This numerical study on the ESP can be used for the design and optimization of higher flow rate (> 100 L/min) ESP.
Experimental data are reported for charging and collection of NaCl aerosols in the 0.03- to $0.2{\mu}m$-geometric-mean-diameter range in 2-stage parallel-plate electrostatic precipitators. The NaCl aerosols are generated with geometric standard deviation of about 1.74 and particle generation rate of about 10^9 particles/see by the constant output atomizer and injected into the air flow in the clean wind-tunnel. The 2-stage parallel-plate electrostatic precipitator installed in the test section of the wind-tunnel is operated with a positive corona discharge. The NaCl aerosols in the channel flow are sampled and transported to the aerosol particle number concentration measurement system by using the isoaxial sampling and transport system constructed based on the Okazaki and Willeke design. The aerosol particle number concentration measurement system measures the size distribution of submicrometer aerosols by an electrical mobility detection technique. It is confirmed from comparing the measured collection efficiencies in this study and the predicted ones by our previous theoretical analysis that the predicted collection efficiencies agree well with the experimental ones. It is also found from the comparison that below about $0.02{\mu}m$ all particles are not charged and the uncharged particles are not collected, and consequently 2-stage parallel-plate electrostatic precipitators are not suitable for that particle size range.
At nanoscales, the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) can best describe the behavior of phonons which are energy carriers in crystalline materials. Through this study, the phonon transport in some micro/nanoscale problems was simulated with the Monte Carlo method which is a kind of the stochastic approach to the BTE. In the Monte Carlo method, the superparticles of which the number is the weighted value to the actual number of phonons are allowed to drift and be scattered by other ones based on the scattering probability. Accounting for the phonon dispersion relation and polarizations, we have confirmed the one-dimensional transient phonon transport in ballistic and diffusion limits, respectively. The thermal conductivity for GaAs was also calculated from the kinetic theory by using the proposed model. Besides, we simulated the electrostatic discharge event in the NMOS transistor as a two-dimensional problem by applying the Monte Carlo method.
We investigated the amount of the toxic gases emitted from the Electrostatic Precipitators(ESPs), which were currently used by indoor air cleaners. We used the wire-to-plate(WTP) type and the needle-to-plate(NTP) type corona discharger in our study. Using the voltage, the polarity of wire, the number of needles of NTP as the input variables, we studied the characteristic of Ozone and $NO_x$ generation in the ESPs. As the results, we found out that the concentration of Ozone, $NO_2$ and $NO_x$ is increased, but the amount of NO is decreased with increasing the voltage and the number of needles. And we knew that the generation rate of ozone and $NO_x$ is very related with the corona region.
Numerical modeling of the flow velocity fields for the near corona wire electrohydrodynamic (EHD) flow was conducted. The steady, two-dimensional momentum equations have been computed for a wire-plate type electrostatic precipitator (ESP). The equations were solved in the conservative finite-difference form on a fine uniform rectilinear grid of sufficient resolution to accurately capture the momentum boundary layers. The numerical procedure for the differential equations was used by SIMPLEST algorithm. The Phoenics (Version 3.5.1) CFD code, coupled with Poisson's electric field, ion transport equations and the momentum equation with electric body force were used for the numerical simulation and the Chen-Kim ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model numerical results that an EHD secondary flow was clearly visible in the downstream regions of the corona wire despite the low Reynolds number for the electrode ($Re_{cw}=12.4$). Secondary flow vortices caused by the EHD increases with increasing discharge current or EHD number, hence pressure drop of ESP increases.
