  • Electrospray is used in various industries because it can produce continuous and uniform droplets. However, it is difficult to find optimal spraying condition due to lack of data in various conditions. In this study, various conditions were divided into electric parameters and fluid property. The electric parameters set Nozzle to Substrate(NTS), nozzle diameters and the fluid property set viscosity and conductivity as conditions. In this study, it observes spray patterns, Sauter Mean Diameter(SMD) according to conditions. As a result, fluid properties had a greater effect on the cone-Jet mode than on the nozzle diameter, NTS, and flowrate. All of solutions have Stable cone-jet mode at voltage of 8.5 kV, NTS of 20 mm and nozzle diameter of 0.2 mm. SMD has 27% different depending on viscosity and conductivity. The increased flowrate and viscosity are rising break-up length and thickening jet also jet is thinned by increased conductivity. Experiments have confirmed that the jet is thickened by increased flowrate and viscosity, and that the jet is thinned by conductivity.

  • The cell performance of direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC) having catalysts coated by electrospray was analyzed. Pd catalyst was used for the anode electrode and Pd catalyst loading amount and formic acid feed rate dependances of fuel cell performance were evaluated. When loading amount of Pd is in between 3mg/$cm^2$ and 7mg/$cm^2$ and formic acid feed rate is 5ml/min., 3mg/$cm^2$ sample showed better potential at 129 mA/$cm^2$ and power density due to difference in mass transfer limitation. However, when the feed rate is greater than 10ml/min., the opposite tendency was observed between 3mg/$cm^2$ and 7mg/$cm^2$ samples. The result was attributed to improvement in electrochemical reaction of the Pd. Based on the above results, In DFAFC including Pd catalyst that was coated by electrospray, 0.537V as the maximum potential at 129 mA/$cm^2$ was attained.

  • This paper presents a successful demonstration of the on-line coupling of MEKC (micellar electrokinetic chromatography) to ESIMS (electrospray ionization mass spectrometry) for the quantitative analysis of seven s-triazine herbicides. The on-line MEKC-ESIMS was used to determine the structure of CE-separated peaks of seven triazine herbicides. The mixture of triazine herbicides was separated in a 20 mM sodium borate buffer (pH 8.5) containing 15 mM sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) by using a bare fused-silica capillary. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometer was operated in the positive-ion mode when the mass spectra of seven triazine herbicides were observed from each peak, and the solution of water-methanol-formic acid (50/49/1 v/v/v) was used as a sheath liquid. The effects of SDS concentration, the run buffer pH, and the electric field on the separation of seven s-triazine herbicides were investigated. The MEKC-ESIMS detection showed 5 to 10 times higher sensitivity compared to the MEKC-UV detection. In addition, it did not need any pretreatment step.

  • A combination of electrospray ionization and tandem mass spectrometry was used to characterize the scavenging reactions of acrylamide (AA) in the presence of glutathione (GSH) in vitro. In the presence of GSH, AA was deactivated effectively and scavenged by reactions consuming small amount of GSH. Reaction products and structural information were identified using collision-induced dissociation (CID) in an ion trap mass spectrometer. In the mixture of GSH and AA, significant increase in abundance of fragment ion peak was observed at m/z 233, which was identified as $[Cys-Glu]^+$, formed by the elimination of glycine moiety of GSH. GSH also contributes to the AA scavenging reaction by conjugating with AA through the sulfhydryl group in cysteine moiety. The probable scavenging reaction pathway of AA in the presence of GSH has been proposed based on the CID experimental data.

  • In this study, experiments are conducted to improve spray coating uniformity by using second and third electrodes based on the electrospray atomization mechanism. The uniformity of fabricated thin films can be improved by adjusting the design of the second electrode. The implementation of the second electrode with an elongated hole and a bending angle of $90^{\circ}$ results in highly uniform films. In addition, induced area to substrate is increased by lowering the applied voltage using the third electrode with a round rod shape. A linear correlation between applied voltage and induced area is confirmed. Thin film thickness and surface roughness are measured after the fabrication of thin films through the electrospray process. It is confirmed that a thin film is formed having an average thickness of 273.44 nm, a thickness uniformity of less than 10%, and a surface roughness of 3 nm.

  • Bilin tetrapyrroles are metabolic products of the breakdown of porphyrins within a species. In the case of mammals, these bilins are formed by the catabolism of heme and can be utilized as either biomarkers in disease or as an indicator of human waste contamination. Although a small subset of bilin tandem mass spectrometry reports exist, limited data is available in online databases for their fragmentation. The use of fragmentation data is important for metabolomics analyses to determine the identity of compounds detected within a sample. Therefore, in this study, the fragmentation of bilins generated by positive ion mode electrospray ionization is examined by collision-induced dissociation (CID) as a function of collision energy on an FT-ICR MS. The use of the FT-ICR MS allows for high mass accuracy measurements, and thus the formulas of resultant product ions can be ascertained. Based on our observations, fragmentation behavior for hemin, biliverdin and its dimethyl ester, phycocyanobilin, bilirubin, bilirubin conjugate, mesobilirubin, urobilin, and stercobilin are discussed in the context of the molecular structure and collision energy. This report provides insight into the identification of structures within this class of molecules for untargeted analyses.

  • We investigated the energy levels of valence region at the planar junction of poly (3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and C61-butyric acid methylester (PCBM) using ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS) with ultra high vacuum. These are the most widely used materials for bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells due to their high efficiency. In order to make the planar junction, we carried out the electrospray vacuum deposition (EVD) of PCBM onto spin-coated P3HT in high vacuum conditions (${\sim}10^{-5}-10^{-6}$). The planar junction interface exhibited 0.71 eV for the offset between P3HT HOMO and PCBM LUMO, which is different from the gap (0.85 eV) of individual values and is closer to the open circuit voltage of solar cells fabricated with the same material combination.

  • The structures of molecular species of galactolipids, such as monogalactosyl diacylglycerol (MGDG) and digalactosyl diacylglycerol (DGDG), isolated from wheat flour have been investigated using negative-ion electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry interfaced with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). According to the result of HPLC analysis, MGDG and DGDG were found to consist of mixtures of five and four molecular species, respectively. The galactolipids have been also analyzed to determine their fatty acid compositions, using HPLC/ESI-MS combined with in-source (or cone voltage) fragmentation. HPLC/ ESI-MS is very useful for one-step analysis of mixtures of galactolipids with a small sample quantity. Especially, the carboxylate anions produced in in-source fragmentations of the negative-ion of each component separated by HPLC provide valuable information on the composition of its fatty acyl chains.
