This paper presents vibration and noise control of flexible structures using squeeze mode electro-rheological mounts. After verifying that the damping force of the ER mount can be controlled by the intensity of the electric fild, two different types of ER squeeze mounts have been devised. Firstly, a small size ER mount to support 3 kg is manufactured and applied to the frame structure to control the vibration. An optimal controller which consists of the velocity and the transmitted force feedback signals is designed and implemented to attenuate both the vibration and the transmitted forces. Secondly, a large size of ER mount to support 200 kg is devised and applied to the shell structure to reduce the radiated noise. Dynamic modeling and controller design are undertaken in order to evaluate noise control performance as well as isolation performance of the transmitted force. The radiated noise from the cylindrical shell is calculated by SYSNOISE using forces which are transmitted to the cylindrical shell through two-stage mounting system.

Many type of smart materials and control laws are available to actively adjust the structure from various external disturbances. Usually, a certain type of control law to activate a specific smart material is tell established, but the effectiveness of the control scheme is limited by the choice of the smart materials and the responses of the structure. ER fluid is adequate to provide small but arbitrary control forces at any point along the structure. It was found that active vibration control of the structure embedded with ER fluids fluidly to suppress the vibration excited with broad band frequency due to the limited change of the structure characteristics. To compensate this limited effect of the control scheme with ER fluid alone, PPF control using PZT as an actuator is added to construct a hybrid controller.

This paper presents the tension control of a wire-cut discharge machine using electrorheological(E,R) fluid based brake system. On the basis of the tension level required in the machine, an appropriate size of the ER brake which features design simplicity, fast response and salient controllability is designed. Considering the Bingham property of ER fluid and actuator response time, the governing equation of the ER brake is derived. And a tension propagation of wire electrode is modeled via frequency response. The tension control performance of the discharge machine is simulated by using a robust sliding mode controller.

Electrorheological(ER) and magnetorheological(MR) fluids have a unique ability to increase the dynamic yield stress of the fluid substantially when electric or magnetic field is applied. Controllable fluids such as ER and MR fluids have received considerable attention as several components of engineering devices. One of them is a smart impact damper using ER/MR fluids. Impact damper system can be used in the joint mechanism of railroad vehicle, protection equipment of elevator's drop, and launch equipment of aircraft. This paper presents the results of an analytical study of the performance of a smart impact damper to suppress vibration during impact excitation. The damping capabilities of MR impact damper for variable applied current are analyzed using Bingham model under sudden impact load.

Electrorheological(HER) and magnetorheologica(MR) fluids have a unique ability to increase the dynamic yield stress of the fluid substantially when electric or magnetic field is applied. ER and MR fluid-based dampers are typically analyzed using Bingham-plastic shear flow analysis under Quasi-steady fully developed flow conditions. An alternative perspective, supported by measurements reported in the literature, is to allow for post-yield shear thinning and shear thickening. To model these, the constant post-yield plastic viscosity in Bingham model can be replaced with a power-law model dependent on shear strain rate that is known as the Herschel-Bulkley fluid model. The objective of this paper is to predict the damping forces analytically in a typical ER bypass damper for variable electric field, or yield stress using Herschel-Bulkley analysis.

The Electro-Rheological (ER) fluid has been used to the ultraprecision polishing of single crystal silicon as new polishing slurry whose properties such as yield stress and particle structure changed with the application of an electric field. In this work, it is aimed to find the effective parameters in the ER fluid on material removal in the polishing system whose structure is similar to that of the simple hydrodynamic bearing. The generated pressure in the gap between a moving wall and a workpiece, as well as the electric field-induced stress of the mixture of ER fluid-abrasives, is evaluated experimentally, and their influence on the polishing of single crystal silicon is analyzed. Moreover, the behavior of abrasive and ER particles is described.

This paper presents a parameter design of an Electrorheological(ER) panel for noise reduction using Taguchi method. Taguchi method is a robust design method that determines control parameters in the presence of noise effect. Host structure thickness, spacer thickness, base oil viscosity and the weight ratio of ER particles are chosen for the control factors. A test setup in an SAE J1400 facility is used to analyze the sound transmission loss. The sensitivity of each factor with signal-to-noise(S/N) ratio and analysis of variance are investigated. The analysis results show that the weight ratio of ER particle and base oil viscosity of the ER fluid mostly affects the noise reduction in the presence of electric field. Based on the Taguchi method, an optimal configuration was designed and comparison is made with experimental result fer the verification.

Electrorheological(ER) and magnetorheological(MR) fluid-based dampers are typically analyzed using Bingham-plastic shear model under quasi-steady fully developed flow conditions. A Herschel-Bulkley constitutive shear flow relationship is that the linear shear stress vs. strain rate behavior of Bingham model is replaced by a shear stress that is assumed to be proportional to a power law of shear rate. This power is called the flow behavior index. Depending on the value of the flow behavior index number, varying degrees of post-yield shear thickening or thinning behavior can be analyzed. But it is not practical to analyze the damping force in a flow mode damper using Herschel-Bulkley model because it is needed to solve a polynomial equation. A useful guide is suggested to analyze the damping force in a damper using the Herschel-Bulkley model.
