Discrete-variational(DV)-$X{\alpha}$ method was applied to investigate the electronic structures of spinel- type manganese oxide which is well known to the high performance adsorbent or cathode material for lithium ion. The results of DOS(density of states) and Mulliken population analysis showed that Li was nearly fully ionized and interactions between Mn and O were strong covalent bond. The effective charge of Li and Mn was +0.77 and +1.44 respectively and the overlap population between Mn and O was 0.252 in $LiMn_2O_4$. These results from DV-X$\alpha$ method were well coincided with the experimental result by XPS analysis and supported the feasibility of theoretical interpretation for the $LiMn_2O_4$ compound.
Molecular structures of the various conformers for the four stereoisomers of tetra-t-butyl-tetra-O-methylsulfinylcalix[4]arene (1) were optimized using DFT BLYP and mPW1PW91/6-31G(d,p) (hybrid HF-DF) calculation methods. We have analyzed the total electronic and Gibbs free energies and normal vibrational frequencies of 16 different structures from four major conformations (cone (CONE), partial cone (PC), 1,2-alternate (1,2-A), 1,3-alternate (1,3-A)) of the four stereoisomers [1(rccc), 1(rcct), 1(rctt), 1(rtct)]. The mPW1PW91/6-31G(d,p) calculations suggested that the $1(rccc)_{CONE}$, $1(rcct)_{PC}$, $1(rctt)_{PC}$, and $1(rtct)_{1,3-A}$ were the most stable conformations of the respective stereoisomers. These outcomes are in accordance with the experimental structures obtained from X-ray crystallography. The electrostatic repulsion between the sulfinyl and methoxy groups is a primary factor for the relative stabilities of the four different conformations. The IR spectra of the most stable conformers [$1(rccc)_{CONE}$, $1(rcct)_{PC}$, $1(rctt)_{PC}$, $1(rtct)_{1,3-A}$] of each stereoisomer were compared to each other.
Electronic and magnetic properties of bilayer zigzag graphene nanoribbon (bZGNR) are studied using pseudopotential density functional method. The edge atoms in the top and bottom layers of bZGNR make a weak hybridization, which leads to electronic structures different from monolayer ZGNR. For asymmetric bZGNR, where the top and bottom layers have different widths, one edge is pinched by the interlayer bonding and the other sustains antiferromagnetic ordering. A small amount of charge transfer occurs from narrower to wider layer, producing spin-polarized electron and hole pockets. External electric field produces asymmetric energy-gap opening for each spin component, inducing half-metallicity in bZGNR.
In order to investigate the magnetism of Ru submonolayer on Pb(001), we have performed first-principles calculations for half-layer of Ru on Pd(001) using the full-potential linearzed augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method. We have found that the magnetic moment of Ru for 0.5 layer is 2.21 B. It is found that substrate Pd layers are polarized by the 0.5 Ru overlayer to have significant magnetic moments. Our results are compared with those obtained by the anomalous Hall effect. The calculated electronic structures, i,e., the spin densities and density of states are presented and discussed in relation with magnetic properties.
This paper analyzed arbitrary Energy band profile heterostructures by solving Schrodinger\`s equation the Poisson's equation self-consistently. Four different concentrations positively ionized donors holes in the valence band free electrons in the conduction band and 2DEG are taken to account for the whole system. 2DEG from both of the structures are obtained and compared with the data available in the literatures. Differential capacitances are also calculated from the concentration profiles obtained. Finally theoretical predictions for both of 2DEGs and the capacitances show good agreement with the experimental data referred in this study.
Two-dimensional (2D) or layered materials have a great potential for applications in energy storage, catalysis, optoelectronics and gas separation. Fabricating novel 2D or quasi-2D layered materials composed of relatively abundant and inexpensive atomic species is an important issue for practical usage in industry. Here, we suggest the layer-structured AlOOH (Boehmite) as a promising candidate for such applications. Boehmite is a well-known layer-structured material and a single-layer can be exfoliated from the bulk boehmite by breaking the interlayer hydrogen bonding. We study atomic and electronic band structures of both bulk and single-layer boehmite, and also obtain the single-layer exfoliation energy using first-principles calculations.
The transition from aromatics to heteroaromatics is very attractive since it provides an extremely large structural variety, the chemical functionality as well as the possibilities for electronic tuning of the fullerene properties. A synthesis of heterofullerenes in macroscopic quantities is unknown however the spectrometric detection of $C_{59}B$ has been reported. The electronic structures of $C_{(60-2x)}(BN)_x$ systems, isoelectronic with $C_{60}$ have been explored by Extended Hukel, AM1 and ab initio methods. The polyhedral assembly energy are 7.7 kcal greater than $C_{60}$ when one B-N unit is substituted with C-C unit. The assembly energies are getting bigger if more B-N unit is introduced. We focus on HOMO-LUMO energy gap and the stability effects in $C_{(60-2x)}(BN)_x$ with different compositions of $(BN)_x$ moiety. The bonding properties of the substituent atoms were investigated in detail.
Half-metallic Heusler alloys (NiMnSb, ppdMnSb, pptMnSb) have attracted much attention due to their unique electronic and magnetic structures. Sppin-ppolarized band structure calculation ppredicts metallic behavior for the majority sppin states and semiconductor behavior for the minority sppin states. We have studied the electronic structures of these half-metallic Heusler alloys by core-level pphotoemission sppectroscoppy of Mn 2pp and 3s XppS sppectra. We found large intensities of Mn 2pp satellites and 3s exchange spplitting comppared with other metal Mn-alloys. These satellite structure can be understood by applying Anderson imppurity model. This fact supports the calculated sppin pprojected ppartial density of states which suggests that the valence electrons be highly sppin ppolarized near Fermi level and that the electrons involved with charge-transfer be mainly minority sppin ones which have semiconducting band structure. The trend of charge transfer energies Δ from ligands (Sb 5pp) to Mn 3d, obtained from our model fitting, is consistent with that calculated from sppin pprojected ppartial density of state. Also the trend of d-d electron correlation energies U calculated from Mn Auger line L3 VV by Mg $K\alpha$ source is comppatible with that resulted from our model fitting. We fitted the Mn 3s curve in the same way as for insulating Mn comppounds by using the same pparameters calculated from Mn 2pp curve fitting exceppt for the Coulomb interaction energy Q between core hole and d-electrons. The 3s sppectra were analyzed by combing the charge transfer model and a simpple model taking into account the configuration mixing effect due to the intra-shell correlation. We found that the exchange interaction between 3s hole and 3d electrons is mainly respponsible for the satellite of Mn 3s sppectra. This is consistent with the neutron scattering data, which suggests local 3d magnetic moment. We find that the XppS analysis results of Mn 2pp and 3s satellite structures of half-metallic Heusler alloys are very similar to those of insulating transition metal comppounds.
The Coverage dependent attachment of multifunctional groups included in threonine molecules adsorbed to Ge (100)$-2{\times}1$ surface was investigated using core-level photoemission spectroscopy (CLPES) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The core-level spectra at a low coverage indicated that the both carboxyl and amine groups participated in the bonding with the Ge (100) surface by "O-H dissociated and N-dative bonded structure". However, at high coverage level, additional adsorption geometry of "O-H dissociation bonded structure" appeared possibly to minimize the steric hindrance between adsorbed molecules. Moreover, the C 1s, N 1s, and O 1s core level spectra confirmed that the carboxyl oxygen is more competitive against the hydroxymethyl oxygen in the adsorption reaction. The adsorption energies calculated using DFT methods suggested that four of six adsorption structures were plausible. These structures were the "O-H dissociated-N dative bonded structure", the "O-H dissociation bonded structure", the "Om-H dissociated-N dative bonded structure", and the "Om-H dissociation bonded structure" (where Om indicates the hydroxymethyl oxygen). These structures are equally likely, according to the adsorption energies alone. Conclusively, we investigate in threonine on Ge (100) surface system that the "O-H dissociated-N dative bonded structure" and the "O-H dissociation bonded structure" are preferred at low coverage and high coverage.
Molecular structures of the various conformational stereoisomers of 2,8,14,20-cyanophenyl pyrogallol[4]arenes 1 were optimized using the mPW1PW91 (hybrid Hartree-Fock density functional) calculation method. The total electronic and Gibbs free energies and the normal vibrational frequencies of the different structures from three major conformations (CHAIR, TABLE, and 1,2-Alternate) of the four stereoisomers [1(rccc), 1(rcct), 1(rctt), and 1(rtct)] were analyzed. The mPW1PW91/6-31G(d,p) calculations suggested that $1(rcct)_{1,2-A}$, 1(rctt)CHAIR, and $1(rtct)_{CHAIR}$ were the more stable conformations of the respective stereoisomers. Hydrogen bonding is the primary factor for the relative stabilities of the various conformational isomers, and maximizing the ${\pi}-{\pi}$ interaction between the cyanophenyl rings is the secondary factor. The calculated IR spectra of the more stable conformers [$1(rctt)_{CHAIR}$, $1(rcct)_{1,2-A}$, $1(rtct)_{CHAIR}$] were compared with the experimental IR spectrum of $1(rtct)_{CHAIR}$.
