Commercialized carbon fiber obtained from polyacrylonitrile(PAN) precursor is subjected to oxidation stabilization at 180 to 300℃ in air atmosphere and carbonization process at 1600℃ or lower in inert gas atmosphere. Both of these processes use a lot of time and high energy, but are essential and important for producing high-performance carbon fibers. Therefore, in recent years, an alternative stabilization technology by being assisted with various other energy sources such as plasma, electron beam and microwave which can shorten the process time and lower energy consumption has been studied. In this study, the PAN precursor was stabilized by using plasma treatment and heat treatment continuously. The morphology, structural changes, thermal and physical properties were analyzed using Field emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction(XRD), Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR), Thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) and Favimat.
The ability of electronic packages and assemblies to resist solder joint failure is becoming a growing concern. This paper reports on a study of high speed shear energy of Sn-4.0wt%Ag-0.5wt%Cu (SAC405) solder with different electroless Ni-P thickness, with $HNO_3$ vapor's status, and with various pre-conditions. A high speed shear testing of solder joints was conducted to find a relationship between the thickness of Ni-P deposit and the brittle fracture in electroless Ni-P deposit/SAC405 solder interconnection. A focused ion beam (FIB) was used to polish the cross sections to reveal details of the microstructure of the fractured pad surface with and without $HNO_3$ vapor treatment. A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and an energy dispersive x-ray analysis (EDS) confirmed that there were three intermetallic compound (IMC) layers at the SAC405 solder joint interface: $(Ni,Cu)_3Sn_4$ layer, $(Ni,Cu)_2SnP$ layer, and $(Ni,Sn)_3P$ layer. The high speed shear energy of SAC405 solder joint with $3{\mu}m$ Ni-P deposit was found to be lower in pre-condition level#2, compared to that of $6{\mu}m$ Ni-P deposit. Results of focused ion beam and energy dispersive x-ray analysis of the fractured pad surfaces support the suggestion that the brittle fracture of $3{\mu}m$ Ni-P deposit is the result of Ni corrosion in the pre-condition level#2 and the $HNO_3$ vapor treatment.
As 3D printing technology is used in the medical field, interest in metal materials is increasing. The Department of Radiation Oncology uses a shielding block to shield the patient's normal tissue from unnecessary exposure during electron beam therapy. However, problems such as handling of heavy metal materials such as lead and cadmium, reproducibility according to skill level and uncertainty of arrangement have been reported. In this study, candidate materials that can be used for metal 3D printing are selected, and the physical properties and radiation dose of each material are analyzed to develop a customized shielding block that can be used in electron beam therapy. As candidate materials, aluminum alloy (d = 2.68 g/cm3), titanium alloy (d = 4.42 g/cm3), and cobalt chromium alloy (d = 8.3 g/cm3) were selected. The thickness of the 95% shielding rate point was derived using the Monte Carlo Simulation with the irradiation surface and 6, 9, 12, and 16 energies. As a result of the simulation, among the metal 3D printing materials, cobalt chromium alloy (d = 8.3 g/cm3) was similar to the existing shielding block (d = 9.4 g/cm3) in shielding thickness for each energy. In a follow-on study, it is necessary to evaluate the usefulness in clinical practice using customized shielding blocks made by metal 3D printing and to verify experiments through various radiation treatment plan conditions.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare the dosimetry of electron beam (EB) plans and three-dimensional helical tomotherapy (3DHT) plans for the patients with left-sided breast cancer, who underwent breast conserving surgery. Materials and Methods: We selected total of 15 patients based on the location of tumor, as following subsite: subareolar, upper outer, upper inner, lower lateral, and lower medial quadrants. The clinical target volume (CTV) was defined as the area of architectural distortion surrounded by surgical clip plus 1 cm margin. The conformity index (CI), homogeneity index (HI), quality of coverage (QC) and dose-volume parameters for the CTV, and organ at risk (OAR) were calculated. The following treatment techniques were assessed: single conformal EB plans; 3DHT plans with directional block of left anterior descending artery (LAD); and 3DHT plans with complete block of LAD. Results: 3DHT plans, regardless of type of LAD block, showed significantly better CI, HI, and QC for the CTVs, compared with the EB plans. However, 3DHT plans showed increase in the $V_{1Gy}$ at skin, left lung, and left breast. In terms of LAD, 3DHT plans with complete block of LAD showed extremely low dose, while dose increase in other OARs were observed, when compared with other plans. EB plans showed the worst conformity at upper outer quadrants of tumor bed site. Conclusion: 3DHT plans offer more favorable dose distributions to LAD, as well as improved target coverage in comparison with EB plans.
Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) is a cancer of the blood. Although electron beam (EB) irradiation is used with other anti-cancer agents, EB irradiation can be harmful to normal tissues around the cancer. In the present study, we evaluate the differential cytotoxic effect of EB irradiation with other molecules, including TNF-${\alpha}$, on DMSO-treated HL-60 cells and HL-60 cells. HL-60 cells are the human promyleocytic leukemia cell line and are differentiated by DMSO. DMSO-treated HL-60 cells are considered to be normal granulocytic cells. In these results, TNF-${\alpha}$ may be used as the potential agent for the treatment of blood cancer without side effects in low dose of EB irradiation therapy.
Recent advances in radiation transport algorithms, computer hardware performance, and parallel computing make the clinical use of Monte Carlo based dose calculations possible. To compare the speed and accuracies of dose calculations between different developed codes, a benchmark tests were proposed at the XIIth ICCR (International Conference on the use of Computers in Radiation Therapy, Heidelberg, Germany 2000). A Monte Carlo treatment planning comprised of 28 various Intel Pentium CPUs was implemented for routine clinical use. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of our system using the above benchmark tests. The benchmark procedures are comprised of three parts. a) speed of photon beams dose calculation inside a given phantom of 30.5 cm$\times$39.5 cm $\times$ 30 cm deep and filled with 5 ㎣ voxels within 2% statistical uncertainty. b) speed of electron beams dose calculation inside the same phantom as that of the photon beams. c) accuracy of photon and electron beam calculation inside heterogeneous slab phantom compared with the reference results of EGS4/PRESTA calculation. As results of the speed benchmark tests, it took 5.5 minutes to achieve less than 2% statistical uncertainty for 18 MV photon beams. Though the net calculation for electron beams was an order of faster than the photon beam, the overall calculation time was similar to that of photon beam case due to the overhead time to maintain parallel processing. Since our Monte Carlo code is EGSnrc, which is an improved version of EGS4, the accuracy tests of our system showed, as expected, very good agreement with the reference data. In conclusion, our Monte Carlo treatment planning system shows clinically meaningful results. Though other more efficient codes are developed such like MCDOSE and VMC++, BEAMnrc based on EGSnrc code system may be used for routine clinical Monte Carlo treatment planning in conjunction with clustering technique.
The evaluation of radioactivated components of heavy-ion accelerator facilities affects the safety of radiation management and the exposure dose for workers. and this is an important issue when predicting the disposal cost of waste during maintenance and dismantling of accelerator facilities. In this study, the FLUKA code was used to simulate the proton treatment device nozzle and classify the radio-nuclides and total radioactivity generated by each component over a short period of time. The source term was evaluated using NIST reference beam data, and the neutron flux generated for each component was calculated using the evaluated beam data. Radioactive isotopes caused by generated neutrons were compared and evaluated using nuclide information from the International Radiation Protection Association and the Korea Radioisotope association. Most of the nuclides produced form of beta rays and electron capture, and short-lived nuclides dominated. However, In the case of 54Mn, which is a radioactive product of iron, the effect of gamma rays should be considered. In the case of tritium generated from a material with a low atomic number, it is considered that handling care should be taken due to its long half-life.
This study investigates the surface modification of a Hastelloy X plate and diffusion bonding in the assembly of surface modified plates. These types of plates are involved in the key processes in the fabrication of a process heat exchanger (PHE) for a $SO_3$ decomposer. Strong adhesion of a SiC film deposited onto Hastelloy X can be achieved by a thin SiC film deposition and a subsequent N ion beam bombardment followed by an additional deposition of a thicker film that prevents the Hastelloy X surface from becoming exposed to a corrosive environment through the pores. This process not only produces higher corrosion resistance as proved by electrolytic etching but also exhibits higher endurance against thermal stress above 9$900^{\circ}C$. A process for a good bonding between Hastelloy X sheets, which is essential for a good heat exchanger, was developed by diffusion bonding. The diffusion bonding was done by mechanically clamping the sheets under a heat treatment at $900^{\circ}C$. When the clamping jig consisted of materials with a thermal expansion coefficient that was equal to or less than that of the Hastelloy X, sound bonding was achieved.
Electron beams have found unique and complementary used in the treatment of cancer, but it's very difficult to delineate dose distribution, because of multi-collisions. Numerical solution is more usefull to describe electron distributed in tissue. A semi-empirical eqution is given for the dose at any point at various depths in water. This equation is a modificated model which was based on solutions of a general age diffusion equation. Parameters have been calulated from electron beams data with energies 6~18MeV form a LINAC for use in computerised dosimetry calculations. The depth doses and isodose curves are predicted as a function of the practical range, source skin distance and field size. Depth dose accuracy have been achieved 2% above 50% depth dose and 5% at lower doses, relative to maximum dose. Also, the shape of the isodose curves with the constrictions at higher dose and bulging ot lower values are accurately predicted. Computer calculated beams have been used to generate ever isodose distribution for certain clinical situations.

Purpose : This study aimed to compare and evaluate between the efficiency of two respective devices, 3D-bolus and step-bolus when the devices were used for the treatment of patients whose chest walls were required to undergo the electron beam therapy after the surgical procedure of modified radical mastectomy, MRM. Materials and Methods : The treatment plan of reverse hockey stick method, using the photon beam and electron beam, had been set for six breast cancer patients and these 6 breast cancer patients were selected to be the subjects for this study. The prescribed dose of electron beam for anterior chest wall was set to be 180 cGy per treatment and both the 3D-bolus, produced using 3D printer(CubeX, 3D systems, USA) and the self-made conventional step-bolus were used respectively. The surface dose under 3D-bolus and step-bolus was measured at 5 measurement spots of iso-center, lateral, medial, superior and inferior point, using GAFCHROMIC EBT3 film (International specialty products, USA) and the measured value of dose at 5 spots was compared and analyzed. Also the respective treatment plan was devised, considering the adoption of 3D-bolus and stepbolus and the separate treatment results were compared to each other. Results : The average surface dose was 179.17 cGy when the device of 3D-bolus was adopted and 172.02 cGy when step-bolus was adopted. The average error rate against the prescribed dose of 180 cGy was -(minus) 0.47% when the device of 3D-bolus was adopted and it was -(minus) 4.43% when step-bolus was adopted. It was turned out that the maximum error rate at the point of iso-center was 2.69%, in case of 3D-bolus adoption and it was 5,54% in case of step-bolus adoption. The maximum discrepancy in terms of treatment accuracy was revealed to be about 6% when step-bolus was adopted and to be about 3% when 3D-bolus was adopted. The difference in average target dose on chest wall between 3D-bolus treatment plan and step-bolus treatment plan was shown to be insignificant as the difference was only 0.3%. However, to mention the average prescribed dose for the part of lung and heart, that of 3D-bolus was decreased by 11% for lung and by 8% for heart, compared to that of step-bolus. Conclusion : It was confirmed through this research that the dose uniformity could be improved better through the device of 3D-bolus than through the device of step-bolus, as the device of 3D-bolus, produced in consideration of the contact condition of skin surface of chest wall, could be attached to patients' skin more nicely and the thickness of chest wall can be guaranteed more accurately by the device of 3D-bolus. It is considered that 3D-bolus device can be highly appreciated clinically because 3D-bolus reduces the dose on the adjacent organs and make the normal tissues protected, while that gives no reduction of dose on chest wall.
