The electron beam (EB) induced curing of a typical resin designed for the hard coating layer of in-mold decoration foils was investigated. The samples were irradiated with different doses of EB and the curing reaction was monitored by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The change in coating properties such as surface hardness and anti-abrasion property was studied as a function of increasing dose. The effect of the addition of nano-particles on the improvement of coating properties was also examined. It was expected that the experimental results could be used for the commercial exploitation of the EB curing system comparable to the ultraviolet (UV) curing system.

Epoxy resin has wide application in various industrial fields because of their good mechanical strength, superiority adhesion and low shrinkage etc. And the typical curing method for epoxy resins is thermal and press compaction. However, a curing method was used electron beam process in this study. Epoxy acrylate was fabricated from mixture of epoxy, acrylic acid, tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) and hydroquinone monomethyl ether (MEHQ) with mole ratios. Then electron beam irradiation effect on the curing of the epoxy acrylate resin was investigated various absorption dose in nitrogen atmospheres at room temperature. The dynamic mechanical and thermal properties of the irradiated epoxy acrylate resins were characterized using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). And the tensile and flexural strength were measured by an universal tensile machine (UTM).
A comparative study using electron-beam(EB) and thermal curing techniques was carried out to determine the effect of cure behavior and thermal stability of epoxy resins. In this work, benzylquinoxalinium hexafluoroantimonate(BQH) was used as a latent cationic catalyst for an epoxy resin. According to the thermogravimetric analysis(TGA), the decomposed activation energy based on Coats-Redfern method was higher in the case of thermal curing technique. This could be interpreted in terms of slow thermal diffusion rate resulted from high crosslink density of the thermally cured epoxy resin. However, the increase of hydroxyl group in the epoxy resin cured by EB technique was observed in near-infrared spectroscopy(NIRS) measurements, resulting in improving the stable short aromatic chain structure, integral procedural decomposition temperature, and finally ductile properties for high impact strengths.
The effect of an electron beam and ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation on the curing of epoxy resins was investigated. Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and diglycidyl ether of bisphenol F (DGEBF) as epoxy resin were used. The epoxy resins containing 1.0-3.() wt% of triarylsulphonium hexafluoroantimonate(TASHFA) and triarylsulphonium hexafluorophosphate(TASHFP) as initiator were irradiated under nitrogen at room temperature with different dosage of EB and ${\gamma}$-rays from a Co$^{60}$ u source. The chemical and mechanical characteristics of irradiated epoxy resins were compared after curing of EB and ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation. The thermal properties of cured epoxy were investigated using dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. The chemical structures of cured epoxy were characterized using near infrared spectroscopy. Mechanical properties such as flexural strength, modulus were measured. The gel fraction of DGEBA with ${\gamma}$-ray was higher than that of the epoxy with EB at the same dose. Young's modulus of the sample irradiated by ${\gamma}$-ray is higher than that of sample cured by EB. From the result of strain at yield, it was found that the epoxy cured by ${\gamma}$-ray had a higher stiff property compared with the irradiated by EB.
Vinyl ester (VE) resins, introduced in the late 1960s, have made large strides in reinforced plastics applications as adhesive and matrix materials on their appropriate mechanical performance characteristics in the glassy state. Generally, VE resins are a group of dimethacrylate resins based on bisphenol A type epoxy resin. They exhibit easy handling properties as well as good resistance to most chemical agents due to their mechanical and thermal properties. In this study, the effects of curing methods of vinyl ester resins on gel contents, flexural strength and dynamic mechanical properties were investigated. Thermal curing (room temperature, $80^{\circ}C$) and electron beam curing were used to crosslink a VE resin/styrene complex (65/35 wt%) with methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKPO) as a catalyst and an 8 wt% cobalt naphthenate in styrene solution as a accelerator. For the samples, gel contents as well as flexural strength and dynamic mechanical properties were characterized and compared by soxhlet apparatus, universal testing machine (UTM) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). As a result, the electron-cured VE resin was confirmed as a better condition than those for gel contents, flexural strength and dynamic mechanical properties, respectively.

We synthesized aliphatic epoxy acrylate monomer by the reaction of glycerol diglycidyl ether and acrylic acid. The reaction was monitored by FTIR, Raman spectroscopy and $^1H$ NMR. Electron-beam (E-beam) curing behaviors of the synthesized monomer were studied by spectroscopic analysis, glass transition temperature, and tensile properties. We found that curing reaction was complete in a low dosage of ca. 30 kGy. The viscosity of monomer was a low enough for coating without using diluents and the cured sample was highly transparent, indicating that the monomer can be used for an E-beam curable coating material on transparent optical films.
Using the ion-beam irradiated indium zinc oxide (IZO) films which was cured at $100^{\circ}C$, uniform LC and homogeneous alignment of liquid crystal (LC) molecules was achieved. The IZO film was deposited on the glass substrate at the curing temperature of $100^{\circ}C$ and irradiated by the ion-beam which is an LC alignment method. To verify the LC alignment characteristics, polarizing optical microscope and the crystal rotation method were used. Additionally, it was confirmed that the LC cell with the IZO films had an enough thermal budget for high-quality LC applications. Field emission scanning electron microscope was conducted as a surface analysis to evaluate the effect of the ion-beam irradiation on the IZO films. Through this, it was revealed that the ion-beam irradiation induced rough surface with anisotropic characteristics. Finally, electro-optical (EO) performances of the twisted-nematic cells with the IZO films were collected and it was confirmed that this cell had better EO performances than the conventional rubbed polyimide. Furthermore, the polar anchoring energy was measured and a suitable value for stable LC device operation was achieved.
An experimental investigation of the physical properties of light curing composite resin P-50 was performed, in which an argon ion laser beam was irradiated. The physical and mechanical properties of laser polymerized composite resin were determined by measuring the compressive strength, diametral tensile strength, curing depth and microhardness depending upon the experimental conditions such as the laser irradiation time(10sec, 20sec, 30sec) and laser power(300mW, 500mW, 1000mW). These observations were compared with a conventional visible light curing technique. In addition, to evaluate the marginal adaptation, Class V cavity was prepared on the buccal or lingual surface of the extracted premolar and filled with P-50 light curing resin. The test samples were irradiated with both light sources so that the interface between the restoration and the tooth structure were observed under scanning electron microscope. The most of physical and mechanical properties of the laser cured resin showed a remarkable improvement than those treated with the conventional light source, while the observations with the scanning electron microscope provided no significant difference for two polymerized sources. From the results in the experiment it appears that the potential of an argon ion laser is of important value of the use in the polymerization of composite resin.
Epoxy-methacrylate prepolymer was synthesized from methacrylic acid and a diglycidyl ether type low molecular weight epoxy resin, and the electron beam curing of the prepolymer was studied using styrene and polyethyleneglycol dimethacrylates as comonomers. The esterification was carried out quantitatively without any side reaction adding more than 250∼300ppm hydroquinone and less than $1{\%}$ (wt) triethanolamine by wt. of methacrylate acid, respectively. In the radiation curing under air atmosphere, the maximum gel fraction was observed at 10∼$30{\%}$ monomer contents. The rate of gel formation was decreased by the presence of unreacted epoxy group and acid in the prepolymer and increased with increasing degree of polymerization of polyethyleneglycol block in the dimethacrylates. Considerable oxygen effect in the curing, particularly when polyethyleneglycol dimethacrylate was used as a comonomer, was recognized through the differences of the product properties, though no remarkable differences were found in the rate of gel formation in air and nitrogen atmosphere.
The silane coupling agent, 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (${\gamma}$-MPTS), was grafted on the surface of alumina nanoparticles. We used the surface modified nanoparticles in the hard coating layer for in-mold decoration (IMD) foils and evaluated the coating properties such as hardness and anti-abrasion property. The effects of electron beam (EB) irradiation on color layer and anchor layer of IMD foils were observed through the difference in color and the cross-cut tape test, respectively. Also, cure kinetics as studied quantitatively under various reaction temperatures by analysis of surface properties and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. From these results, we constructed database for the commercial exploitation of EB curing system.
