  • This paper deals with design and dynamic analysis of electromagnets for levitation applications. On the basis of equivalent magnetic circuit (EMC) method and 3-D finite element analysis (FEA) model, initial and detailed design for electromagnets are performed. Using the state equation for the closed-loop control, the dynamic analysis of electromagnets is also performed. Finally, this paper investigates the variation of levitation force according to current under fixed nominal air-gap, and the variation of required current according to load weight in order to maintain the nominal air-gap. From these results, the validation of design and dynamic analysis of electromagnets is confirmed. In particular, the influence of winding temperature on levitation control is discussed in detail.

  • An electromagnets and a single-sided linear induction motor(SLIM) are used for suspension and propulsion equipment respectively. The electromagnets and SLIM are installed in the same frame, called a bogie, to reduce the volume under the vehicle floor and to raise the response charateristics to follow the track. Then the 3-dimensional forces(thrust force, normal force, side force) generated by SLIM direct]y affect the suspension system as the disturbance force. Moreover, in the running condition, the gap length variation in the electromagnets is the same as the SLIM. Therefore, the mutual interaction between the electromagnets and the SLIM is an important problem to realize the smaller gap length. In this paper, the dynamic interaction is analyzed and confir

  • Various precision engineering studies have attempted to remove mechanical friction, which causes the performance of a system to deteriorate, from precision positioning devices. Since the classical fluid lubrication method has some disadvantages in clean environments, attention has been focused on magnetic bearings and contact-free systems with their pollution-free characteristics. In this paper, f electromagnets are modeled and analyzed, not only for magnetic bearings but also for contact-free electromagnetic actuators. Three types of electromagnets that are appropriate for various applications were considered using magnetic circuitry theory. The results were experimentally validated.

  • Static tests on the performance of the electromagnets of the electromagnetic maglev vehicle were conducted. Performance of the magnets wound with the alumimum sheet were tested and compared with that of the magnets constructed with aluminum coils of rectangular cross section. It turns out that with the use of the aluminum sheet we can improve the lifting force per magnet by 19.5% and thereby make electromagnets lighter than those made with the aluminum coils of rectangular cross section.

  • The analysis and control algorithm of a new type unsymmetrical self-bearing step motor is presented. The motor actuator is used for both motor and bearing functionality without any redundant coil windings or redudant electromagnets for bearing functionality. Self bearing step motor layout and control current generation method for unsymmetrical position of electromagnets are described. This new current generation method without additional current for bearing functionality leads to minimize the power loss. As the result of the unbalance response approach, the constant torque is possible, even though the bearing functionality is added or not.

  • In the precision motion device, the frictional problem by mechanical friction causes serious effects on the system performance. Various researches have been executed to solve this problem, but classical fluid lubrication method has some disadvantages in precision motion under clean environment. Therefore, the magnetic bearing and contact-free systems have been focused on with its pollution-free characteristics. In this paper, we treat modeling and analysis of electromagnets not only for magnetic bearing but also fer contact-free electromagnetic actuators. Three types of electromagnet for various applications are modeled and analyzed by magnetic circuit theory and the validity is verified by experiments.

  • A magnetostrictive sensor is a sensor measuring elastic waves. Because of its unique non-contact measurement feature, the sensor receives more attentions in recent years. These sensors have been mainly used to measure longitudinal and torsional waves in ferromagnetic waveguides, but there increases an interest in using the sensor for flexural wave measurement. Since the performance of the sensor is strongly influenced by the applied bias magnetic field distribution, the design of the bias magnetic system providing the desired magnetic field is critical. The motivation of this investigation is to design a bias magnetic system consisting of electromagnets and yokes and the specific objective is to formulate the design problem as a bias yoke topology optimization. For the formulation, we employ linear magnetic behavior and examine the optimized results for electromagnets located at various locations. After completing the design optimization, we fabricate the prototype of the proposed bias magnetic system, and test its performance through flexural wave measurements.

  • In this work, a magnetic levitation (maglev) system is developed to transport a wafer between semiconductor fabrication process modules in clean rooms to take advantages of eliminating particle and oil contamination that normally exist in conventional transport systems due to contact motion of mechanical components. A main feature of the maglev system developed in this work is that a controller and power supplying part are not mounted on the moving carrier but on the stationary track, which is defined a controller-free carrier, to reduce carrier's weight. Iron-core electromagnets and irons are used for levitation, and air-core electromagnets and permanent magnets are used for stabilization. Analysis, design, and modeling of the magnetically levitated transport system are presented. The performance of the maglev system is experimentally demonstrated.

  • This paper deals with the design and property analysis of 7kW-class small-scaled superconducting Linear Synchronous Motor (LSM) and testing equipment for a number of performance pre-tests prior to the development of coreless-type superconducting LSM suitable for 600km/h very high speed train. First, the basic design and property analysis are conducted before developing a small-scaled superconducting LSM model with 2-pole superconducting electromagnets, and additionally the cost-down design of the superconducting electromagnets is conducted to use less high-Tc superconducting wire. Finally, the superconducting magnet coil span is selected at 120mm, and input ground armature current of 670Aturns is required to produce 44.7N of thrust based on research findings.

  • Magnetic levitation control system of a metal ball was designed using combined PID and fuzzy logic, in which two electromagnets are used to control the vertical and horizontal position of the ball. Single synchronization coil sensor was used to detect the vertical position. Electric power is differentially supplied to two electromagnets so that the ball can move horizontally. In the experiment 25 cm diameter metal ball was levitated and successfully controlled to move horizontally.
