  • The electrochemical and thermal stability of $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.16}Al_{0.04}O_2$ were studied before and after $Co_3(PO_4)_2$ coating. Different to conventional coating material such as $ZrO_2$ or AlPO4, the coating layer was not detected clearly by TEM analysis, indicating that the $Co_3(PO_4)_2$ nanoparticles effectively reacted with surface impurities such as $Li_2CO_3$. The coated sample showed similar capacity at a low C rate condition. However, the rate capability was significantly improved by the coating effect. It is associated with a decrease of impedance after coating because impedance can act as a major barrier for overall cell performances in high C rate cycling. In the DSC profile of the charged sample, exothermic peaks were shifted to high temperatures and heat generation was reduced after coating, indicating the thermal reaction between electrode and electrolyte was sucessfully suppressed by $Co_3(PO_4)_2$ nanoparticle coating.

  • DLC coatings have been widely applied in industrial fields that require high corrosion resistance due to their excellent mechanical characteristics and chemical stability. In this research, effects of DLC coating thickness and defects on corrosion resistance were investigated for application of metallic bipolar plates in polymer membrane electrolyte fuel cells (PEMFCs). Results revealed that a DLC coating thickness of 0.7 ㎛ could lead to a defect size reduction of about 75.9% compared to that of 0.3 ㎛.As a result of potentiodynamic polarization experiments, the current density under a potential of 0.6 V was measured to be less than 1 ㎂/cm2,which was an excellent value. Inparticular, the delamination ratio and the decrease rate of maximum pitting depth were up to 84.8% and 63.3%, respectively, with an increase in the DLC coating thickness. These results demonstrate that DLC coating thickness and defects are factors that can affect corrosion resistance of DLC coating and its substrate.

  • Hybrid composite membranes were prepared by coating poly(ethylene oxide) and $SiO_2$ particles onto the porous polypropylene nonwoven matrix. Gel polymer electrolytes prepared by soaking the hybrid composite membranes in an organic electrolyte solution exhibited ionic conductivities higher than $1.1{\times}10^{-3}Scm^{-1}$ at room temperature. Dyesensitized solar cell (DSSC) employing the hybrid composite membrane with PEO and 10 wt % $SiO_2$ exhibited an open circuit voltage of 0.77 V and a short circuit current of 10.78 $mAcm^{-2}$ at an incident light intensity of 100 $mWcm^{-2}$, yielding a conversion efficiency of 5.2%. DSSC employing the hybrid composite membrane showed more stable photovoltaic performance than that of the DSSC assembled with liquid electrolyte.

  • TiN or Ti/TiN was coated on stainless steel as bipolar plate in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) to improve their corrosion resistance and electric conductivity, and their properties were examined under fuel cell operating condition. After 200 hours operation, the behaviors for the corrosion, crack and dissolution of coating layer were investigated by various techniques. The corrosion and exfoliation of coating layer were considerably generated except for SUS316L-Ti/TiN after fuel cell operation even if the electric conductivity and corrosion resistance of coated stainless steel bipolar plates were improved. The adoption of Ti layer between TiN layer and the surface of stainless steel enhanced the adhesion of TiN layer and decreased the possibility of corrosion by the increase of coating layer.

  • This paper reviews recent approaches to develop composite polymer-containing coatings by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) using various low-molecular fractions of superdispersed polytetrafluoroethylene (SPTFE). The features of the unique approaches to form the composite polymer-containing coating on the surface of MA8 magnesium alloy were summarized. Improvement in the corrosion and tribological behavior of the polymer-containing coating can be attributed to the morphology and insulating properties of the surface layers and solid lubrication effect of the SPTFE particles. Such multifunctional coatings have high corrosion resistance ($R_p=3.0{\times}10^7{\Omega}cm^2$) and low friction coefficient (0.13) under dry wear conditions. The effect of dispersity and ${\xi}$-potential of the nanoscale materials ($ZrO_2$ and $SiO_2$) used as electrolyte components for the plasma electrolytic oxidation on the composition and properties of the coatings was investigated. Improvement in the protective properties of the coatings with the incorporated nanoparticles was explained by the greater thickness of the protective layer, relatively low porosity, and the presence of narrow non-through pores. The impedance modulus measured at low frequency for the zirconia-containing layer (${\mid}Z{\mid}_{f=0.01Hz}=1.8{\times}10^6{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$) was more than one order of magnitude higher than that of the PEO-coating formed in the nanoparticles-free electrolyte (${\mid}Z{\mid}_{f=0.01Hz}=5.4{\times}10^4{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$).

  • The protection effect of a $ZrO_2$ coating layer on a $LiCoO_2$ thin film was characterized. A wide and smooth $LiCoO_2$ thin film offers sufficient opportunity for careful observation of the reaction at the interface between cathode (coated and uncoated) and electrolyte. The formation of a $ZrO_2$ coating on a $LiCoO_2$ thin film was confirmed by secondary ion mass spectrometry. Scanning electron and atomic force microscopy were used to characterize the surface morphologies of coated and uncoated films before and after cycling. A $ZrO_2$-coated $LiCoO_2$ film showed a higher discharge capacity and rate capability than an uncoated film. This may be associated with a surface protection effect of the coating. The surface of a pristine film was damaged during cycling, whereas the coated film maintained a relatively clear surface under the same measurement conditions. This result clearly demonstrates the protection effect of a $ZrO_2$ coating on a $LiCoO_2$ thin film.

  • An electroplating on the lead frame fabricated from domestic copper plate was studied experimentally. In this study, nickel was plated on the thin copper lead frame and silver layer was coated on the nickel film in the cyanide electrolyte. The effect of process variables such as current density, plating time, coating thickness and flow rate of electrolytic solution on the properties of coating was investigated. Some samples on each step were fabricated during electroplating. The results obtained from polarization measurement, observation of SEM photograph, adhesion test of coating and microhardness test are as follows. On silver plating, polarization resistance of potentiostatic cathodic polarization curve is reduced as the flow rate of Ag electrolytic solution increases. And above resistance is also reduced when the minor chemicals of sodium cyanide and sodium carbonate are added in potassium silver cyanide bath. The reduced polarization resistance makes silver deposition on the cathode easy. An increase in the current density and the coating thickness causes the particle size of deposit to coarsen, and consequently the Knoop microhardness of the coating decreases. On selective plating an increase in the flow rate of plating solution lead to do high speed plating with high current density. In this case, the surface morphology of deposit is of fine microstructure with high Knoop hardness. An increasing trend of the adhesion of coating was shown with increasing the current density and flow rate of electrolytic solution.

  • The aim of this study was to fabricate a dextran polyelectrolyte multi-layer on a bare metal stent (BMS) and to evaluate bio-physical properties of the layer. Diethylaminoethyl-dextran (DEAE-D) as a polycation and dextran sulfate (DS) as a polyanion were successively coated on the bare metal stent by a well-known layer-by-layer procedure. The morphology of the stent surface and its cell adhesion were studied after each coating step by scanning electron microscopy. The stent showed more blotched and slightly rougher morphology after dextran-DS coating. The contact angle of the DEAE-DS group ($39.5{\pm}0.15^{\circ}$) was significantly higher than that of the BMS group ($45.16{\pm}0.08^{\circ}$), indicating the improvement of hydrophilic. The SMC proliferation inhibition in the DEAE-DS-coated stent group ($20.9{\pm}0.04%$) was stronger than that in the control group ($21.7{\pm}0.10%$ in DS-coated group only). The DEAE-DS coating is desired for stent coating materials with biocompatibility and anti-restenosis effect.

  • $TiO_2$ anatase nanotube arrays (NTAs) were grown by electrochemical anodization and followed annealing of Ti foil. Ethylene glycol/$NH_4F$-based organic electrolyte was used for electrolyte solution and using second anodization process to obtain free-standing NTAs. After obtaining NTAs, ITO film was deposited by sputtering process on bottom of NTAs. UV-curable NOA was used for attach free-standing NTAs on flexible plastic substrate (PEN). Solid state electrolyte (spiro-OMeTAD) was coated via spin-coating method on top of attached NTAs. Ag was deposited as a counter electrode. Under AM 1.5 simulated sunlight, optical characteristics of devices were investigated. In order to use flexible polymer substrate, processes have to be conducted at low temperature. In case of $TiO_2$ nano particles (NPs), however, crystallization of NPs at high temperature above $450^{\circ}C$ is required. Because NTAs were conducted high temperature annealing process before NTAs transfer to PEN, it is favorable for using PEN as flexible substrate. Fabricated flexible solid-state DSSCs make possible the preventing of liquid electrolyte corrosion and leakage, various application.
