  • In this paper, we describe a self-aligned fabrication method for a nano-patterned bottom electrode using flood exposure from the backside. Misalignments between layers could cause the final devices to fail after the fabrication of the nano-scale bottom electrodes. A self-alignment was exploited to embed the bottom electrode inside the glass substrate. Aluminum patterns act as a dry etching mask to fabricate glass trenches as well as a self-aligned photomask during the flood exposure from the backside. The patterned photoresist (PR) has a negative sidewall slope using the flood exposure. The sidewall slopes of the glass trench and the patterned PR were $54.00^{\circ}$ and $63.47^{\circ}$, respectively. The negative sidewall enables an embedment of a gold layer inside $0.7{\mu}m$ wide glass trenches. Gold residues on the trench edges were removed by the additional flood exposure with wet etching. The sidewall slopes of the patterned PR are related to the slopes of the glass trenches. Nano-scale bottom electrodes inside the glass trenches will be used in beam resonators operating at high resonant frequencies.

  • This paper presents a method for deposition an individual carbon nanotube (CNT). The alignment of a single CNT is very useful to perform studies related to applications in FET (Field Emitted Transistor), SET (Single Electron Transistor) and to make chemical sensor as well as bio sensors. In this study, we developed the deposition method of a CNT individualized in a solution. Using the electrokinetic method, we found the optimum conditions to assemble the nanotube and discussed about plausible explanation for the assembling mechanism. These results will be available to use for making the CNT sensor device.

  • This paper presents an improved vertical alignment nematic liquid crystal mode characterized by the protrusions or slits of the top substrate and additional stripe type common electrodes with polarity switching of the bottom substrate to improve multi-domain vertically aligned (MVA) and patterned vertically aligned (PVA) nematic modes. MVA and PVA modes have disadvantages such as an LC disclination in the vicinity of the middle region of electrodes between the top and bottom protrusions in MVA mode or the top and bottom slits in PVA mode. Therefore, the stripe type common electrode generating a horizontal electric field and the protrusion or slit producing some pretilt of liquid crystals (LCs) were used to improve the LC disclination, which influences the transmittance and response speed. The simulation results showed that the proposed VA mode has higher transmittance than the MVA and PVA modes. As a result, the proposed VA mode can improve the response speed and transmittance remarkably, which makes it useful for upgrading the LCD display quality.

  • A three-terminal hybrid-aligned nematic liquid crystal (3T-HAN LC) cell capable of fast turn-off switching is proposed in this paper. By employing the relaxation process initiated by an electric-field pulse, a fast turn-off time of less than 1 ms can be obtained through optically hidden relaxation. A low operating voltage and high transmittance were confirmed through simulations and experiments.

  • Various welding methods such as Gas Tungsten Arc Welding(GTAW), magnetic force electrical resistance welding and Laser Beam Welding(LBW) are now available for end cap closure of nuclear fuel rods. Even though the resistance and GTA welding processes are widely used in manufacturing commercial fuel rods, they can not be recommended for the remote seal welding of fuel rods in the hot cell Facility due to the complexity of the electrode alignment, the difficulty in replacing parts in a remote manner and the large heat input for the thin sheath. Therefore, the Nd:YAG laser system using optical fiber transmission was selected for the end cap welding of irradiation fuel rods in the hot cell. The remote laser welding apparatus in the hot cell Facility was developed using a pulsed Nd:YAG laser of 500 watt average power with an optical fiber transmission. The weldment quality such as microstructure and mechanical strength was satisfactory. The optimum conditions of laser welding for encapsulating irradiation fuel rods in the hot cell were obtained.

  • We optimized a patterned-vertical-alignment (PVA) transflective liquid-crystal (LC) cell for small pixel application. To achieve the high resolution display performance in the mobile communication equipments such as mobile phones, personal data assistants, and tablet personal computers, we optimized the parameters of liquid crystal and the electrode structure. Both the transmittance and the reflectance are maximized at the same time.

  • This paper describes the characteristics of partial discharge generated by conducting particle in cable splice using ultrasonic method. For simulating partial discharges generated by defects, outer semi conductor of cable splice as ring share electrode was used. The conductive particle was attached on the surface of cable insulator(XLPE) to examine the affection of conducting particles in cable splice. The correlation between the partial discharge quantity and the magnitude of the ultrasonic signal was investigated as the number, length, diameter and alignment of particle when applied voltage increased.

  • We report on the growth mechanism of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) using ultra thin Ni catalysts and direct current plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) system. The CNTs were grown with -600 V bias to substrate electrode and catalyst thickness variation of 0.07 nm to 3 nm. The CNT density was reduced with catalyst thickness reduction and increased growth time. Cone like CNTs were grown with ultra thin Ni thickness, and it results from an etch of carbon network by reactive etchant species and continuous carbon precipitation on CNT walls. Vertically aligned sparse CNTs can be grown with ultra thin Ni catalyst.

  • The LCD based on Kerr effect is highly interesting because it uses an optically isotropic state with no need of alignment layer and it shows sub-millisecond response time. The problem of the device is that it requires very high operating voltage and the transmittance is relatively low compared with other LCDs that use nematic LC. In this work, we study on various electrode structures and driving method which can lower operating voltage.

  • All transparent UV photodetector based on ZnO was fabricated with structure of NiO/ZnO/$SnO_2$/ITO by using RF and DC magnetron sputtering system. ZnO was deposited with 4 inch ZnO target (purity 99.99%) for a quality film. In order to build p-n junction up, p-type NiO was formed on n-type ZnO by using reactive sputtering method. The indium tin oxide (ITO) which is transparent conducting oxide (TCO) was applied as a transparent electrode for transporting electrons. To improve the UV photodetector performance, a functional $SnO_2$ layer was selected as an electron transporting and hole blocking layer, which actively controls the carrier movement, between ZnO and ITO. The photodetector (NiO/ZnO/$SnO_2$/ITO) shows transmittance over 50% as similar as the transmittance of a general device (NiO/ZnO/ITO) due to the high transmittance of $SnO_2$ for broad wavelengths. The functional $SnO_2$ layer for band alignment effectively enhances the photo-current to be $15{\mu}A{\cdot}cm^{-2}$ (from $7{\mu}A{\cdot}cm^{-2}$ of without $SnO_2$) with the quick photo-responses of rise time (0.83 ms) and fall time (15.14 ms). We demonstrated the all transparent UV photodetector based on ZnO and suggest the route for effective designs to enhance performance for transparent photoelectric applications.
