  • Recovery of valuable metals in the industrial wastewater and sludge has attracted an attention owing to limited metallic resources in the earth. In this study, we firstly fabricated Ti/Ir-Ru electrodes by spin coating technique for effective recovery of Cu in electrowinning process. Two different Ti/Ir-Ru electrodes were fabricated using 100 and 500 mM of precursors (i.e., Ir-Ru). SEM-EDX and AFM revealed that Ir and Ru were homogenously distributed on the surface of Ti plate by the spin coating, in particular the electrode prepared by 500 mM showed distinct boundary line between Ir-Ru layer and Ti substrate. XRD, XPS, and cyclic voltammetry also revealed that characteristics of IrO2, RuO2, and TiO2 and its electrocatalytic property increased as the concentration of coating precursor increased. Finally, we carried out Cu recovery experiments using two Ti/Ir-Ru as anodes in electrowinning process, showing that both anodes showed a complete removal of Cu (1 and 10 g/L) within 6 h reaction, but much higher kinetic rate constant was obtained by the anode prepared by 500 mM. The findings in this study can provide a fundamental knowledge for surface characteristics of Ti/Ir-Ru electrode prepared by spin coating method and its potential feasibility for effective electrowinning process.

  • Poly(anthranilic acid) was synthesized by rapid mixing method using 5-sulphosalicylic acid as a dopant. The synthesized polymer was characterized by various techniques like FT-IR, UV-Visible, and X-ray diffraction $etc.$, The FT-IR studies reveal that the 5-sulphosalicylic acid is well doped within the polymer. The morphological property was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopic technique. The electrochemical properties of the polymer were studied by cyclic voltammetric method. The synthesized polymer was used to modify glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and the modified electrode was found to exhibit electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of uric acid (UA).

  • Zirconium based alloys have been extensively used as a cladding material for fuel rods in nuclear reactors, due to their low thermal neutron absorption cross-section, excellent corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties at high temperatures. However, a cladding material for fuel rods in nuclear reactors was contact water during long time at high-temperature, so it is necessary to improve the wear and corrosion resistance of the fuel cladding, At ambient environment, there are few data or paper on the characteristic of corrosion in chloride solution and acidic solution. The specimens used in this work are pure Zr and Zircaloy-4. Zircaloy-4 is a specific zirconium-based alloy containing, on a weight percent basis, 1.4% Sn, 0.2% Fe, 0.1% Cr. Pitting corrosion resistance of two alloys by ASTM G48 is higher than that of electrochemical method. Passive film formed on Zircaloy-4 is mainly composed of $ZrO_2$, metallic Sn, and iron species regardless of formation environments. Also, passive film formed on Zr alloys shows n-type semiconductic property on the base of Mott-Schottky plot.

  • To investigate the corrosion behavior of tools steel surface in various coating film, the surface of hard coated Ti-Zr-N film on the tool steel by using magnetron-sputtering methods was researched using various experimental methods. STD 61 steels were manufactured by using vacuum furnace and solutionized for 1hr at $1050^{\circ}C$. Steel surface was coated with Ti-Zr-N film at $150^{\circ}C$ and 100W for 1h by using DC-sputtering equipment. Surface characteristics of Ti-Zr-N film coated specimens were investigated by OM, XRD, FE-SEM and nano-scratch tester. And corrosion behaviors of the coated specimen were investigated by polarization test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EG&G Co, PARSTAT 2273. USA). It was found that Ti-Zr-N film coated sample had a thick coated layer and showed a good wear resistance and corrosion resistance of surface compared with ZrN and TiN coated sample. The corrosion resistance and mechanical property of Ti-Zr-N film coated STD 61 alloy increased as sputtering time increased.

  • An amperometric glucose biosensor has been developed using viologen derivatives as electron mediator of glucose oxidase (GOD) at Au electrode. Highly stable self assembled monolayer (SAM) of thiol-based viologen is immobilized onto the Au electrode followed byGOD is immobilized onto the viologen modified electrode. This biosensor response to glucose was evaluated amperometrically in the potential of -300 mV. Upon immobilization of glucose oxidase onto the viologen modified-electrode, the biosensor showed rapid response towards glucose. Experimental conditions influencing the biosensor performance such as, pH, potential were optimized and assessed. This biosensor offered an excellent electrochemical response for glucose concentration below ${\mu}mol$ level with high sensitivity and selectivity and short response time. The levels of the RSD's (< 5 %) for the entire analyses reflected the highly reproducible sensor performance. Using the optimized a linear relationship between current and glucose concentration was obtained up to $4.5{\times}10^{-4}$ M. In addition, this biosensor showed well reproducibility and stability.

  • Silver has the highest electrical conductivity of all metals and consequently this property is an attractive feature which makes it a leading candidate for use in electronic devices. The research conducted was focused primarily on the development of a process for obtaining a deposited silver-coating onto alumina, for applications related to electrical-conducting devices and, ancillarily, catalysts. Alumina balls and plane substrates were utilized for the investigation. The coating process employed an aqueous ammoniacal silver-nitrate electrolytes with a formaldehyde solution as the reductant. Modifying additives-an activator which would be expected to promote good deposition-characteristics onto the (dielectric) substrate and an inhibitor which would obviate homogeneous reduction (precipitation) of silver was observed when the activator-containing silver-electrolyte reductant constituents were combined. However, the silver-electrolyte/reductant system with inhibitor could be employed (at 8$0^{\circ}C$) to achieve a viable (subject to future research optimization) coating on alumina. The influence of the processing temperature on the deposition process was delineated during the course of the research. The morphology of the deposited-silver on the alumina balls was assessed by SEM imaging. A tape-peel test was employed, with the plane substrates, to semi-quantitatively characterize the adhesion to the alumina.

  • Steel plates coated by self-healable polymer still can be rusted since it takes time to be healed. In this study, dual self-healing coating material is developed using corrosion inhibitor (DTBEDA) which can form hindered urea (HUB) as reversible cross-linking bond at the same time. Developed dual self-healing polymer is coated on steel plate, and scratch healing property was investigated by surgical blades and nano/micro indentation tester. The anticorrosion effect of DTBEDA was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).

  • This study dealt with the tensile strength characteristics of stainless steel 304L steel by hydrogen charging. Especially, the effect of hydrogen charging time on the tensile strength and ductility of 304L stainless steels was evaluated, in conjunction with the observation of their fracture surfaces. The tensile properties of hydrogen-charged 304L stainless steels were also investigated with the variation of tensile loading speeds. The hydrogen amount of 304L stainless steels obviously increased with the increase of hydrogen charging time. The tensile properties of 304L stainless steels were clearly affected by the short term charging of hydrogen. In particular, the elongation of 304L stainless steels decreased with increasing hydrogen charging time, due to the hydrogen embrittlement. It was also found that the tensile properties of hydrogen-charged 304L stainless steels were very sensitive to the crosshead speed for tensile loading.

  • Composite electrodes for rechargeable batteries generally consist of active material, electric conductor, and polymeric binder. And their composition and distribution within the composite electrode determine the electrochemical activity in the electrochemical systems. However, it is not easy to quantify the physical properties of composite electrodes themselves using conventional experimental analysis tools. So, 3D structural modeling and simulation can be an efficient design tool by looking into the contact areas between particles and electric conductivity within the composite electrode. In this study, while maintaining the composition (LiCoO2 : Super P Li® : Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVdF) = 93 : 3 : 4 by wt%) and loading level (13 mg cm-2) of the composite electrode, the effects of LiCoO2 size (10 ㎛ and 20 ㎛) and electrode density (2.8 g cm-3, 3.0 g cm-3, 3.2 g cm-3, 3.5 g cm-3, 4.0 g cm-3) on the physical properties are investigated using a GeoDict software. With this tool, the composite electrode can be efficiently designed to optimize the contact area and electric conductivity.

  • Two kinds of welding methods were carried out for 22APU stainless steel, one is a Laser welding and the other is the TIG welding. In this case, difference of corrosion characteristics of welded zone with two welding methods mentioned above was investigated with electrochemical methods such as measurement of corrosion potential, polarization curves and cyclic voltammogram etc.. Vickers hardness of all welded zone (WM:Weld Metal, HAZ:Heat Affected Zone, BM:Base Metal)in the case of Laser welding showed a relatively higher value than those of TIG welding. Futhermore their corrosion current density in all welding zone were also observed with a lower value compared to TIG welding. In particular corrosion current density of BM regardless of welding method indicated the lowest value than those of other welding zone. Intergranular corrosion was not observed at the corroded surface of all welding zone in the case of Laser welding, however it was observed at WM and HAZ with TIG welding, which is suggested that chromiun depletion due to forming of chromium carbide appears to WM and HAZ which is in the range of sensitization temperature. Therefore their zone can easily be corroded with more active anode. Consequently we can see that corrosion resistance of all welding zone of 22APU stainless steel can apparently be improved by using of Laser welding.
