  • Analysis has been made of the anti-corrosive property of organic coating under the shear stress of the flow by means of AC impedance method. Marine anti-corrosive painted panels were placed in the water channel with varying flow rate, thereby experiencing varying flow shear stress on the surfaces. The velocities of the salt water were ranged from 1.48 to 5.2 m/s and the coating thickness of from $70{\mu}m\;to\;140{\mu}m$. For all coating thicknesses investigated, the poorer anti-corrosive property and the lower adhesion strength have been found for the higher shear stress. It has been found that the shear stress accelerates the aging of organic marine coatings.

  • The diesel engine of the merchant ship has been aperated in severe environments more and more, because the temperature of the exhaust gas of a combustion chamber is getting higher and higher with increasing use of heavy oil of law quality, due to the significant increase in the price of oil in recent some years. As a result, the degree of wear and corrosion between exhaust valve and seat ring is more serious compared to other engine parts. Thus the repair welding of exhaust valve and seat ring is a unique method to prolong the life of the exhaust valve, from an economical point of view. In this study, the corrosion property of both weld metal and base metal was investigated using electrochemical methods such as measurement of corrosion potential, cathodic and anodic polarization curves, cyclic voltammogram, and polarization resistance in 5% H2SO4 solution. The test specimen was a part of an exhaust valve stem being welded as the base metal, using various welding methods. In all cases, the corrosion resistance as well as hardness of the weld metal zone was superior to the base metal. In particular, plasma welding showed relatively good properties for both corrosion resistance and hardness, compared to other welding methods. In the case of DC SMAW (Shielded metal arc welding), corrosion resistance of the weld metal zone was better than that of the base metal, although its hardness was almost same as the base metal.

  • In this study, the Zn-Mg alloy coatings with various Mg contents were deposited using an unbalanced magnetron sputtering process. Their surface microstructure, chemical composition, phase, and corrosion property were investigated. The microstructure of the Zn-Mg coatings changed from porous microstructure to dense one with increasing Mg contents in the coatings. As Mg contents in coatings increased, intermetallic phases such as $Mg_2Zn_{11}$ and $MgZn_2$ were detected from X-ray diffraction (XRD) results. The corrosion resistance of the Zn-Mg alloy coatings was investigated quantitatively using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurement with 3.5% NaCl solution. The results of EIS measurement showed that the charge transfer resistance and the phase angle of the Zn-Mg alloy coatings were increased from $162.1{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ to $558.8{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ and from about $40^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}$ with increasing Mg contents from 5.1 wt.% to 15.5 wt.% in the coatings. These results demonstrate that the Zn-Mg coatings with increasing Mg contents showed an enhanced corrosion resistance.

  • We fabricated the ZnO (zinc oxide)/$SiO_2$ (silicon dioxide) branch hierarchical nanostructures by the e-beam evaporation of $SiO_2$ onto the surface of the electrochemically grown ZnO nanorods on Si substrate, which leads to the self-assembled $SiO_2$ nanorods by oblique angle deposition between vapor flux and vertically aligned ZnO nanorods. In order to investigate the effects of $SiO_2$ deposition on the morphology and optical property of ZnO/$SiO_2$ branch hierarchical nanostructures, the evaporation time of $SiO_2$ was varied under a fixed deposition rate of 0.5 nm/s. The vertically aligned ZnO nanorods on Si substrate exhibited a low reflectance of <10% in the wavelength range of 300~535 nm. For ZnO/$SiO_2$ branch hierarchical nanostructures at 100 s of evaporation time of $SiO_2$, the more improved antireflective property was achieved. From these results, ZnO/$SiO_2$ branch hierarchical nanostructures are very promising for optoelectronic and photovoltaic device applications.

  • In this study, supercapacitor based on the all solid state electrolyte with PVA(polyvinyl alcohol), ionic liquid as a BMIMBF4(1-buthyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate) and activated carbon/Ni-MOF composite was fabricated and characterized its electrochemical properties with function of MOF. In order to analysis and comparison that electrochemical performances [including cyclic voltammetry(CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) and galvanostatic charge/discharge test] of prepared supercapacitor based on activated carbon/Ni-MOF composite and all solid state electrolyte. As a result, specific capacitance of the supercapacitor without Ni-MOF was 380 F/g which value decreased to 340 F/g after adding Ni-MOF to activated carbon as a electrode material. This result exhibited that decreased electrochemical property of the supercapacitor effected on physical hinderance in the electrode. In further, it needs to optimization of the Ni-MOF amount (wt%) in the electrode composite to maximize its electrochemical performances.

  • We have studied the effect of heat treatment of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) as a counter electrode on the electro-chemical properties of dye-snsitized solar cells. MWNTs on the p-type Si substrate were synthesized by thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) using Fe catalysts. We prepared the two types of MWNTs samples with the different diameters. The rapid thermal annealing (RTA) treatment for the MWNTs was carried out at the growth temperature ($900^{\circ}C$) for 1 minute with $N_2$ gas atmosphere. The structural, electrical and electrochemical properties of MWNTs were investigated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Raman spectroscopy, 2-point probe station and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The I(D)/I(G) ratio of heat-treated MWNTs in Raman spectra was considerably decreased. It was also found that the heat-treated MWNTs showed better redox reaction of iodide at the interface between MWNTs surface and electrolyte than that of as-grown MWNTs. The redox resistance value of heat-treated electrodes was measured to be much lower than that of as-grown electrode at the interface. As a result, the counter electrode using the heat-treated MWNTs showed better electrochemical properties.

  • Basic design concept of the future steel structure requires environmental compatibility and maintenance free capability to minimize economic burdens. Recent trends in alloy design for advanced weathering steel include addition of various alloying elements which can enhance formation of stable and protective rust layer even in polluted urban and/or high $Cl^{-}$ environment. The effects of Ca, Ni, W, and Mo addition on the corrosion property of Ca-modified weathering steel were evaluated through a series of electrochemical tests (pH measurement and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy: EIS) and structural analysis on rust layer formed on the steel surface. Ca-containing inclusions of Ca-Al-Mn-O-S compound are formed if the amount of Ca addition is over 25 ppm. Steels with higher Ca content results in higher pH value for condensed water film formed on the steel surface, however, addition of Ni, W, and Mo does not affect pH value of the thin water film. The steels containing a high amount of Ca, Ni, W and Mo showed a dense and compact rust layer with enhanced amount of ${\alpha}-FeOOH$. Addition of Ni, W and Mo in Ca-modified weathering steel shows anion-selectivity and contributes to lower the permeability of $Cl^{-}$ ions. Effect of each alloying element on the formation of protective rust layer will be discussed in detail with respect to corrosion resistance.

  • LiMn$_2$O$_4$-based spinels has been studied extensively as positive electrode materials for rechargeable lithium and lithium ion batteries. We describe here that LiMn$_2$O$_4$ cathode active materials is preparated by sol-gel process using water as solvent, which often yields inorganic oxides of excellent phase purity and well-controlled stoichiometry. Using this process, it has been possible to synthesize phase-pure crystalline spinel LiMn$_2$O$_4$ by calcining the appropriate precursors in air at 80$0^{\circ}C$ for several hours. The influence of different time have also been explored. LiMn$_2$O$_4$ preparated in the present study exhibit the single phase of cubic and active reaction at 400 ~ $600^{\circ}C$. Electrochemical studies show that the this method- synthesized materials appear to present reversible oxidation and reduction reactions at 3.0V ~ 4.5V and cycle stability during 50 cycle.

  • To prepare the high-capacity cathode material with improved electrochemical performances, nanoparticles of $C0_3(PO_4)_2$ were coated on the powder surface of $Li[Co_{0.1}Ni_{0.15}Li_{0.2}Mn_{0.55}]O_2$, which was already synthesized by simple combustion method. The coated powders after the heat treatment at >$700^{\circ}C$ surely showed well-structured crystalline property with nanoscale surface coating layer, which was consisted of $LiCOPO_4$ phase formed from the reaction bwtween $CO_3(PO_4)_2$ and lithium impurities. In addition, cycle performance was particularly improved by the $CO_3(PO_4)_2$-coating for the cathode material for lithium rechargeable batteries.
