  • The effect of electrochemical modification of the physical and mechanical properties of sandstone from Paleozoic coal measure strata was investigated by means of liquid nitrogen physical adsorption, X-ray diffraction and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) tests using purified water, 1 mol/L NaCl, 1 mol/L $CaCl_2$ and 1 mol/L $AlCl_3$ aqueous solution as electrolytes. Electrochemical corrosion of electrodes and wire leads occurred mainly in the anodic zone. After electrochemical modification, pore morphology showed little change in distribution, decrease in total pore specific surface area and volume, and increased average pore diameter. The total pore specific surface area in the anodic zone was greater than in the cathodic zone, but total pore volume was less. Mineralogical composition was unchanged by the modification. Changes in UCS were caused by a number of factors, including corrosion, weakening by aqueous solutions, and electrochemical cementation, and electrochemical cementation stronger than corrosion and weakening by aqueous solutions.

  • In the case of casting materials or ductile materials for marine equipment, it is common to employ a surface modification for achieving cost reduction and improvement in strength. In particular, aluminium bronze ALBC3 exhibits excellent corrosion resistance, and thus widely used for marine application. However, application of the material under high-velocity seawater flow may induce electrochemical corrosion damage and physical damage such as cavitation erosion, leading to shorter service life of equipment. In this study, surface modification was carried out on ALBC3 alloy for different shot peening stand-off distances, and the physical hardness and electrochemical characteristics before and after modification were investigated. The results in each case showed the hardness increase in comparison with non-peened specimen, and the maximum hardness improvement(50 %) was found in 10 cm of shot-peening stand-off distance. It is observed that the electrochemical characteristics were irrelevant to application of shot peening.

  • Undesirable interfacial reactions between the cathode and sulfide electrolyte deteriorate the electrochemical performance of all-solid-state cells based on sulfides, presenting a major challenge. Surface modification of cathodes using stable materials has been used as a method for reducing interfacial reactions. In this work, a precursor-based surface modification method using Zr and Mo was applied to a LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 cathode to enhance the interfacial stability between the cathode and sulfide electrolyte. The source ions (Zr and Mo) coated on the precursor-surface diffused into the structure during the heating process, and influenced the structural parameters. This indicated that the coating ions acted as dopants. They also formed a homogenous coating layer, which are expected to be layers of Li-Zr-O or Li-Mo-O, on the surface of the cathode. The composite electrodes containing the surface-modified LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 powders exhibited enhanced electrochemical properties. The impedance value of the cells and the formation of undesirable reaction products on the electrodes were also decreased due to surface modification. These results indicate that the precursor-based surface modification using Zr and Mo is an effective method for suppressing side reactions at the cathode/sulfide electrolyte interface.

  • In this work, ordered mesoporous carbons (OMCs) were prepared by the conventional templating method using mesoporous silica (SBA-15) for Pt-Ru catalyst supports in fuel cells. The influence of surface modification on carbon supports on the electrochemical activities of Pt-Ru/OMCs was investigated with different pH. The neutral-treated OMCs (N-OMCs), base-treated OMCs (B-OMCs), and acid-treated OMCs (A-OMCs) were prepared by treating OMCs with 2 M $C_6H_6$, 2 M KOH, and 2 M $H_3PO_4$, respectively. The surface characteristic of the carbon supports were determined X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrochemical activities of the Pt-Ru catalysts had been enhanced when the OMCs supports were treated by basic or neutral agents, while the electrochemical activities had been decayed for the A-OMCs supported Pt-Ru.

  • Gears, crucial components in modern precision machinery for power transmission mechanisms, are required to have low contacting noise with high torque transmission, which makes the use of gear-tooth profile modifications and gear-tooth surface crowning extremely efficient and valuable. Due to the shortcomings of current techniques, such as manual rectification, mechanical modification, and numerically controlled rectification, we propose a novel electrochemical gear-tooth profile modification method based on an artificial neural network control technique. The fundamentals of electrochemical tooth-profile modifications based on real-time control and a mathematical model of the process are discussed in detail. Due to the complex and uncertain relationships among the machining parameters of electrochemical tooth-profile modification processes, we used an artificial neural network to determine the required processing electric current as the tooth-profile modification requirements were supplied. The system was implemented and a practical example was used to demonstrate that this technology is feasible and has potential applications in the production of precision machinery.

  • This paper reports a simple, yet effective 1-step surface modification method for stainless steel. Electrochemical etching in dilute Aqua Regia forms hierarchical micro and nanoscale structure on the surface. The surface becomes highly hydrophobic (${\sim}150^{\circ}$) as a result of the etching in terms of static contact angle (CA). However the liquid drops easily pinned on the surface because of high contact angle hysteresis (CAH), which is called a "petal effect": The petal effect occur because of gap between surface microstructures, despite of intrinsic hydrophobicity of the base material. The pore size and period of surface structure can be controlled by applied voltage during the etching. This method can be applied to wide variety of industrial demand for surface modification, while maintaining the advantageous anti-corrosion property of stainless steel.

  • In this study, we present a novel approach to improve electrochemical heavy metal ion (HMI) sensing responses via post-synthetic modification of carbon nanotube-based metal-organic framework (MOF) nanocomposites with a Schiff base. UiO66-NH2 was employed as the MOF and incorporated with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) through in-situ growth, enhancing the electrical conductivity of the MWCNT-UiO66-NH2 composite. Subsequently, the Schiff base, which has been proven to be an excellent ligand for metal ion detection, was functionalized onto MWCNT-UiO66-NH2 via post-synthetic modification to improve its HMI absorption capacity. To evaluate the effect of the Schiff base on HMI detection capacity, electrochemical sensing of Cd2+, Pb2+, Cu2+, and Hg2+ was performed in an aqueous solution utilizing the MWCNT-UiO66-Schiff modified electrode as well as the bare electrode. Individual differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry results revealed that the modified electrode with MWCNT-UiO66-Schiff exhibited increased HMI sensing properties, especially with 1.82-fold improvement in average oxidation currents toward 10 µM of Cu2+ compared to that for a bare glassy carbon electrode. The selective Cu2+-sensing properties of MWCNT-UiO66-Schiff were reflected in the highly selective Cu2-binding affinity of the Schiff base-containing model molecules compared to those of Cd2+, Hg2+, and Pb2+. Our work provides a new strategy for improving the sensing properties of electrochemical HMI sensors by the post-synthetic modification of MWCNT-UiO66 with a Schiff base.

  • The surface of $Li[Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}]O_2$ cathode particle was modified by lanthanum based oxide to improve electrochemical property and thermal stability. The XRD pattern of surface layer was indexed with that of $La_4NiLiO_8$. The discharge capacity of modified electrode was higher than that of pristine sample, specially at fast charge-discharge rate and high cut-off voltage. In the DSC profile of the charged sample, the generation of heat by exothermic reaction was decreased by surface modification. Such enhancement may by attributed to the presence of stable lanthanum based oxide, which effectively suppressd the reaction between electrode and electrolyte on the surface of $Li[Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}]O_2$ electrode.

  • In this paper, we successfully fabricated Al-modified Li4Ti5O12 in one-step, easily, simply, and quickly. The structural properties of Li4Ti5O12 by Al modification were favorable to electrochemical activity compared to pristine Li4Ti5O12, and thus, it was confirmed that electrochemical performances such as cell balancing and initial discharge capacitance were effectively improved. The optimized anode/cathode thickness was selected 70 ㎛/240 ㎛. Al modified Li4Ti5O12 realized high discharge capacitance of 61 F/g. Therefore, Al modification can be considered as one of the effective methods for the electrochemical performances of Li4Ti5O12 anodes for next-generation hybrid supercapacitors.

  • The porosity (including the specific surface area and pore volume-diameter distribution) of montmorillonitic soft rock (MSR) was studied experimentally with an electrochemical treatment, based on which the change in porosity was further analyzed from the perspective of its electrokinetic potential (${\zeta}$ potential) and the isoelectric point of the electric double layer on the surface of the soft rock particles. The variation between the ${\zeta}$ potential and porosity was summarized, and used to demonstrate that the properties of softening, degradation in water, swelling, and disintegration of MSR can be modified by electrochemical treatment. The following conclusions were drawn. The specific surface area and total pore volume decreased, whereas the average pore diameter increased after electrochemical modification. The reduction in the specific surface area indicates a reduction in the dispersibility and swelling-shrinking of the clay minerals. After modification, the ${\zeta}$ potential of the soft rock was positive in the anodic zone, there was no isoelectric point, and the rock had lost its properties of softening, degradation in water, swelling, and disintegration. The ${\zeta}$ potential increased in the intermediate and cathodic zones, the isoelectric point was reduced or unchanged, and the rock properties are reduced. When the ${\zeta}$ potential is increased, the specific surface area and the total pore volume were reduced according to the negative exponent law, and the average pore diameter increased according to the exponent law.
